An appreciation thread for what I'd consider to be the best game in the Gungrave series.

However, this appreciation comes with a whole bunch of caveats. The gameplay is antiquated. It's an arcade game, score-attack is one of the fundamental systems. It isn't complex. It's one-note and very vanilla.

Audio design is a mixed bag. You'll hear the same screams from enemies over, and over, and over again. The level design often consists of tight corridors and the camera control speed can make it difficult to pan to enemies who don't spawn directly in front of you.

Textures on the Switch are a tad blurry. Framerate in both gameplay and cutscenes tend to dip. None of this sounds good, I know. However one-note the game feels, it hits that one note really hard. Each stage is usually three to four minutes in length, and you're spending most of that time mowing down waves of enemies.

Much like how Contra: Rogue Corps is a good game weighed down by the Contra namesake, Gungrave G.O.R.E. has 1980's arcade-like design trappings weighed down by modern gaming expectations of a third-person shooter.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,355 games (as of December 9th, 2024)

I have Gungrave and Gungrave: Overdose on my ps2, both of which I enjoy quite a bit. Ain't nothing wrong with simple, fun arcadey type experiences. Frankly I find myself gravitating to this style of pick up and play type game more often than not. I don't mind games with in depth narratives, and tons of different systems and skill trees to juggle, but sometimes you just want to shoot things, haha.

Gungrave gore looks great tho, definitely something I'll pick up down the line.
