@rallydefault Same reaction from me; pretty common reaction I think. Lovely game in some ways and I wanted to love it, but the rice farming also made me drop it.

Resident Evil Revelations (3DS). Not a bad game at all, but the slow clunky movement, allied to the little New 3DS nub being used for the camera, provided just enough friction that I put the game down for a bit. And that dodge mechanic makes absolutely no sense.

It’s been months now and I don’t know if I’ll ever pick it back up. We’ll see.

@Pastellioli ZX Spectrum isn't a console, but a home computer from the early-mid 1980s although I think they (home computers in general) were more popular in the UK than the US which is possibly why you've never heard of it. Just like the 'Console Wars' of the time with Nintendo vs Sega, the home computers had their own 'War'...you were either a Spectrum (Speccy) kid or a Commodore64 kid. I had a C64

@dmcc0 Thank you for correcting me! I should have also added that, at the time, the ZX Spectrum games Rare’s predecessor Ultimate Play the Game made were also viewed as being very impressive at the time and got good reception, but have unfortunately not aged well with the controls, and a lot of retrospective reviews seem to believe that the Spectrum games are not good. The perspectives in the games are cool, but it’s the controls that just make me go bleh. I would say that, out of all the ZX Spectrum games featured there, Underwurlde had the worst controls, while Jetpac had controls I felt were simpler and still playable by today’s standards.

And yeah, with me being from the United States, I had no idea about the ZX Spectrum before playing Rare Replay lol

@Pastellioli I haven't played many Rare games and, to be honest didn't really like the ones I have played but I tend to find that the simpler stuff tends to age better than the stuff that was considered more technically impressive at the time - and that can be true of newer games too. I find some early 3D stuff (PS1 etc) really tough to go back to now, even games I used to love at the time.

@Ulysses
Yeaaaaaaa.... but to me it's just not fun. I'm a fan of fluid-feeling and responsive side scrolling platforming and combat, not the stiff "fighting game" feeling that you reference.

And I certainly didn't care about being perfect or anything with the rice harvest. It was just boring and arcane, and I'm someone who plays games to just have some brainless fun and maybe challenge my twitch reflexes.

It just wasn't a fit for me, no matter how much the devs wanted me to "accept imperfection" lol

@dmcc0 I can see that. Yeah, although I am a fan of Rare's N64 games a ton, they have aged poorly visually and sometimes have pretty bad control schemes that make me not want to revisit them as frequently. Conker's Bad Fur Day was great IMHO and impressive technically, but I thought the controls were pretty bad and the camera was junky. I prefer the remake over it for that reason, and I boot it up more over the original.

I went back to Bad Fur Day over the weekend after playing the remake for so long and the jank present in the N64 version became even more noticeable, and, if I am being honest, was worse than the first time I played it. Because of how bad the control was, I only replayed this part of the game where you battle a bull (which, I would argue, is maybe the one part of the game that doesn’t feel too terrible to control) and once I finished it, I turned the game off and played something else.

I love the Banjo-Kazooie games too and I don’t mind the collectathon aspects, but some other parts of the games I am really not a huge fan of. The sequel was way harder and a little too big, which made completing the game take longer than it did with the first game.

Some older games by them, such as the SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy, have aged better, both in controls and visuals. I still think that the games play well despite being from almost 3 decades ago, and the pixel graphics still look great and detailed.

You are right about the more simpler stuff tending to age better than most 3D games from decades ago; yes, they were impressive back then, but some aspects of it aren’t really that great nowadays, mostly regarding the gameplay and controls. I still love the N64 games mentioned above, but some parts of them are too tough and terrible, which prevents me from doing more playthroughs of them. I only play one specific part of them and stop afterward.

There a lack of enemy ai balancing. The first circuit was a pushover, all gold medals. The second circuit, I can't place higher than silver, the ai is merciless. There are just other racing games I'd rather play.

Wargrove
More of a collection-casualty that actually being "dropped". Physical releases for Wargove 1+2 are inbound.

Big Pharma
A big clunky when compared to other sim-production/sim-management games in the space. Would rather play either of the Two Point games.

I think I'm dropping not just a game but an entire genre: Western RPGs. I did beat Oblivion years ago, but I mostly did it by just running away from everybody until the final boss who I had to defeat (not sure how I pulled that off to be honest). Then I tried twice to get into Skyrim because everybody and their mother talks about how great it is, and Game Informer named it the best RPG of all time (should have known not to listen to GI). I just couldn't get into it, thought I would try again one day, but finally got a really good deal on selling it and did. Finally, I actually was currently playing through Witcher 3. While I thought it was better than the Elder Scrolls games, there's just still something about it and I just find myself wanting to play something else. I probably would have finished it but I'm now getting another good deal on it so I'm just letting it go with no regrets.

Plus, whatever anyone wants to say about weapon degradation in BotW/TotK, what they do in Witcher 3 is 10x worse. It's bad enough having the weight limit and then not being able to move. But having my silver sword just go bad in the middle of a fight, out in the middle of nowhere while fighting hordes of monsters and not being able to get another one. I had a dozen steel swords but only the one silver. Yeah, I'm good. Happily moving on to Xenoblade 3 which I picked up recently.

Mortal Kombat 11 (Switch). I've had this sitting on my SD card for like 2 years. I grabbed the Ultimate Edition with all DLC's, expansions etc. for like $26 during sale. Originally I was going to get to it not long after purchase but then once rumors of a possible "MK Trilogy" HD release was floating around I got all hyped for that and shelved MK 11. My priority games changed constantly so I kept forgetting I had this game.

I finally booted it up the other day and I just couldn't get into it. This is NOT a knock on the game itself. I see a deep well executed fighting game system in there. However, I think either I moved beyond Mortal Kombat in general or it left me behind. I grew up from the first game in the 90's (I'm 40) and used to be obsessed with those earlier games. MK Trilogy was probably my most played MK game ever. The last MK game I'd say I was into was Armageddon on the Wii. I actually liked that one and put some time into it. Since then I haven't really been into the fighting game genre with the exception of Smash games but then again those aren't considered your typical fighting game.

There's so much overwhelming stuff with this game. Every screen has coins, crystals, consumable stuff etc. The fighting system seems like I really need to dig deep to fully understand how to properly play. I'm old school all I need is some kicks, punches, a special move or 2, and a few combos (if that). There's so much happening on screen to pay attention to I was stressing out. Everything you do there's all these notifications of earning this, earning that, coins this, crystals that, etc. I felt like I was playing some weird Vegas casino version of MK. I spent some time in the tutorial, and I kept getting confused. I noticed in the end I'd just button mash and that got old real fast. But the slot machine UI kept informing me I've achieved so much. I got even more overwhelmed with the variations for each character and defensive/offensive bars, recharging, make sure to press "R" at the right time for certain moves to enhance it then to follow it up with a combo of something, etc. So many stimuli and hard attempts at extra dopamine release galore.

Eventually I said "screw it I'll just burn through the story mode" but even that lost me. I've been out of MK for too long that I discovered that I just didn't care (that's not the games fault). The story seemed so convoluted that I thought I should read pages of wiki stuff to catch up. I tried to push on and yeah the cinematic gameplay was impressive but when it got to the fights I found myself not invested. And yeah I'd just start button mashing while being rained on by notifications of how much goodies I'm earning. It was overwhelming and at the same time I just couldn't get invested.

I'm not knocking the game. I can definitely see an amazing, deep mechanical fighting game in there. It looks like the game is more for the tournament competitive scene than for old school old heads like me. Like I said earlier it seems like the MK I grew up with left me behind. But that's alright I'm not mad at it. It's on me and I can easily understand if I get super flamed by some of you for my take. I can see the incoming, "bruh you need to git gud" and/or "this isn't the 90's anymore". I'm cool with that.

This fire is burning and it's out of control. It's not a problem you can stop it's Rock and Roll!!!

Tasuki

@Ganner I know exactly how you feel. Not only is it that way for MK with me but also Street Fighter. They just seem more geared for competitive play nowadays then an actual story. I get it that's where they make the money but the stories just seem to have no thought or are nonexistent. Use to love those games when I was a kid but nowadays I'd rather just pass on them and remember them for what they were.

@Xyphon22 all of my friends think I'm crazy for not liking Skyrim. I get what you mean. A lot of Western games feel, like, soft, I guess? Not really sure how to explain it, but they always end up repulsing me.

With that said, I would love to like them more, so I might just need to really force myself into enjoying them to find what I do like about them.😅

@Mrkittyhead Nah, there's too much else out there to bother to keep trying something over and over again. Like, I keep wanting to try Dragon's Dogma, especially when it's on sale for only $5. But I have so many other games that I already own and haven't yet played to bother with another WRPG that I probably won't like either. It's just not worth it.

But another game I just recently dropped was Octopath Traveler II. Not because it was bad, I was rather enjoying it. But I was playing on Gamepass on PC and it kept crashing on me. It would usually crash after a couple of minutes, but then if I restarted it would last for awhile, so while annoying I could deal with it. But then I reached a place after doing my third Chapter 1 where every single time I entered a battle it would freeze and crash. Just not worth it, but I'll have to try to pick it up on Switch one day and start again.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

The only thing I didn't feel like completing was the sneaky knife missions, I got 7/10 of those. And the final two story missions in the game were just too needlessly particular compared to the rest of the game and made me lose interest. Overall came out to around 95% completion, and I still consider it beaten even though I technically didn't finish it lol.

@RygelXVIII glad to see another Origami King fan!😂 I was afraid I wouldn’t like TTYD because of how bad everyone else seemed to think Origami King was, but I'm loving it so far. Sorry that it didn’t stick for you

I got Rapala Pro Bass PS3 this afternoon and played for 30 minutes but I didn't even understand how to cast the fishing rod according to instructions.
It was too hard for me as I have never played games like that so I dropped the game and it will not stay inside my collection.

I tried out Journey to Silius on NSO's NES catalog. I really wanted to like this game, but I was left disappointed by it. I'll start out with the positives... I think the controls and graphics are pretty good, and the music is incredible for NES standards. But the enemy placement tends to be jerkish a lot of the time, and health refills are ridiculously rare in this game - I even thought there weren't any at all in the first 10 minutes or so. I also really hate that when you defeat a boss, you can still take damage... I even got a game over that way. I used to think that the game would at least have infinite continues, but nope! I made it to about level 4, lost all my lives, and the game took me back to the title screen right away. And that's where I called it. So yeah... I didn't like this game.

After completing Conker’s Bad Fur Day again for a game club on Pure Xbox, I sort of still was in the mood for Conker, and before Bad Fur Day, there was this Game Boy Color game called Conker’s Pocket Tales that I decided to give a try for fun, and although I didn’t get too far into it, I just found it so unfun and confusing, which is worse since I’m playing it on an emulator and not the original hardware it was released on, so the controls are way more confusing.

My interest in that game is super low, and I just dropped it for that reason, plus I’m playing two other games and trying to get more progress and content in those, so Pocket Tales has fallen out of my radar now.

Paper Mario: TTYD remake. Chapter 5 finally pushed me over the edge, and I started a replay of Origami King instead, which I hadn't played since I beat it the first time shortly after release. Really enjoying that so much more on every level, and I feel almost mildly "gaslit" by all the people through the years raving on about TTYD and how I had to play the best Paper Mario. I really don't find much of a redeeming quality about it, but maybe it's all just nostalgia.

I'm reeeeeaaally late to this, but I just wanted to hop in and say: You're not alone, my friend. You're not alone. I feel exactly the same way about Origami King and TTYD.

I may have enjoyed TTYD a bit more than you, but boy was I ready for it to end. Origami King, on the other hand, I've replayed multiple times, even getting 100% one time.
