Nobody likes to drop games especially after you've invested some time AND money
but the sunk cost fallacy proves true and sometimes you gotta drop some

I recently had to drop The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
At the last case of the first game (20+ hours)
It was SUCH a drag from coming off the much tighter experience of the original trilogy

Just. SO much text. a lot of it unnecessary too, just dumb banter. glacial gameplay pace really
I just genuinely stopped caring, it wasn't fun.

What games have you recently dropped.

LEGO Jurassic PS4.
I have finished two games from four but I already felt not impressed to continue the other two games. Actually I don't like Jurassic franchise at all. I bought the game just to test the water and now I got my answer.
I think I will sell the game and find the better replacement.

Not majorly recent per se but I dropped Ocarina of Time on NSO after beating Dodongo's Cavern. Couldn't really vibe with the controls or the at times extremely convoluted, out of the way solutions to some puzzles. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday but who knows.

I dropped Splatoon 2 recently. I’ve had a ton of fun with the game, it was the second Switch game I bought after Odyssey. It’s a very well made game, but it’s been without new content for so long, and it’s been getting stale. And especially with all the great games coming out this year, including, you know… Splatoon 3. Between that game, Strikers, whatever else Nintendo has left to show for this year that might amuse me, not to mention the dozens of hours I’ve sunk into Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Legends Arceus, and I find it hard to go back to Splatoon 2 at this point. I hope Splatoon 3 will warrant that 3 at launch, but that’s a topic for another day.

Buy Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Metroid Dread for me, only played about 15 minutes. I was stupid buying it really because I never enjoyed any of the older games too.

Root Letter and Root Film. I appreciate a good visual novel (Steins;Gate, Raging Loop, Coffee Talk, etc) but the happy and bubbly audio design for what's suppose to be two suspenseful supernatural tales just...turned me off inside a couple of hours playing both.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,247 games (as of April 15th, 2024)

Paper mario origami king. Couldnt get my head round the boss battles. If it werent for the timer I might actually stood a chance and yeah you can extend it with coins but you could end up going through thousands of coins in one boss battle. I would probably would of quite enjoyed it if it werent for the darn timer. Its like intelligent systems went out there way to make the battles as inaccessible as possible.

Deaths door. Got really tired of it's souls-like gameplay. My fault for buying it since I heard it was souls-like, but I didn't think I would get frustrated with it as much as I did. My biggest issue was the camera angle during intense battles. Sometimes you couldn't see where you should be dodging too and ultimately dying because of it. Oh well.. file that one under retired I guess.

@Commandervide0 i dropped that one too after maybe the stapler boss. i was just absolutley unable to even. the battles sucked and as you said the timer just added anxiety

@NintendoByNature see that's a shame cause i'm waiting for a price drop before i buy it. if the only frustrating thing was the camera i might be able to endure it

Not that recently, but I've dropped both Skyrim and Immortals: Fenix Rising. It's not that they're bad games, I just couldn't get into them for whatever reason. I hope to try again someday, but I have so much else to play and more games just keep coming out that "someday" may never come.

@SoManyHaveDied I also recently stopped played Great Ace Attorney Chronicles right in the middle of the last case of the first game, but mostly because I got really caught up into both Bioshock 2 and Ni No Kuni 2. But now I've beaten both of those games so I will pick it back up soon. I agree, though, that it is not nearly as good or as well-paced as the previous games and so far I am shocked that most lists I've seen have it second in the series only behind Trials and Tribulations. Unless it greatly picks up it is down at the bottom for me, but I'm still definitely going to finish it.

Not really a "drop" per se, but I bought Trivia For Dummies on sale, and even then it was overpriced.

It's an extremely basic game, single-player only, and a round of the game only entails 10 random questions with no score-keeping whatsoever.

Now, that wouldn't be so bad if the game was any fun to play and wasn't bugged.

At one point, the game FROZE, which is absolutely inexcusable for such a basic game.

And you're given 15 seconds to answer each question, with no chance of skipping the timer, which makes the experience unnecessarily and stupidly tedious.

If I could have gotten a refund, I would. A pitiful joke of a game, and best avoided. Trivial Pursuit Live and Jeopardy are great for trivia buffs though. But speaking of drops, I have since stopped playing Jeopardy as I started encountering repeat questions after 15+ hours of gameplay, which is pretty damn good for the genre. Meanwhile, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (which I've dropped except for multiplayer purposes) yielded multiple repeat questions after mere MINUTES of gameplay!

@Xyphon22 I don't think it would top T&T as that was gold and i couldn't put it down once i got to the last two cases. i never had that moment once with TGAAC. I sold it just recently so i looked up the rest of the game online and.......yeah i mean it sounds cool but if i had to sit thru more tireless text just to get to the point then i made the right choice

I'm trying to even think of the last game I dropped (multiplayer games don't count, that's just cheating). If I could get through all the bs parts of Xenoblade 2, it'd take a game I probably wouldn't even buy in the first place to get me to stop midway through. :V

Legitimately the last one that comes to mind that I just gave up on is the Deer God. Which is a weird game that I think was supposed to have a story or at least a comprehensible goal or at least justification for why the game keeps on going. But it never did, like it started and then never...continued...and just let me keep going right through seemingly randomly generated levels that don't really have compelling level design or...that much of note. I kept trying to die to at least something resembling a game over or anything new but the game found ways around that even. I played it for like 2 hours, somehow felt like I accomplished nothing.

Though ask me again if I ever give up on trying to find the true ending of Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon. That might happen.

I really try not to drop games, but ones I've either dropped or am on the verge of dropping include...

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Cute presentation and story, but the combat system is poorly thought-out, and the monster-collecting element didn't grab me at all.

Super Paper Mario - An interesting game that is utterly ruined by the inane perspective-swapping gimmick, obtusely designed hub area, and clunky platformer-esque gameplay. I dropped it some time last year and have no intention of going back any time soon.

Pokemon Shining Pearl - God, it's so ugly and basic. And I really dislike this region in particular. It was one of the few Pokemon games I never finished on the original hardware, either. Doesn't help that Legends: Arceus is out now. Why play this when something far better is available?

Xenoblade Chronicles - First on the Wii, then on the 3DS. It's utterly lacking in the charm that made me fall in love with XC2 and Torna: The Golden Country. Also not a fan of the intrusive gimmick with the visions the sword gives you. Although I own the Switch remake, and fully intend to give it a third go at some point.

Final Fantasy IX - Admittedly, I was playing the slow as hell PS1 original, which probably didn't help, but the problem is I wasn't enjoying anything else about it either. The characters are forgettable and all look deformed. The combat is boring, and I hate everything associated with developing Quina. The overworld is so foggy I felt like I was trapped in Silent Hill. The plot pacing is also really bad, and I felt like I'd barely made any movement in the plot by the time I got to the end of the first disk.

The World Ends With You - Haven't officially dropped it yet, but I dread going back to finish it. The music, sound design, gameplay, etc. are all SO bad. Probably the least fun I've had with a major NDS title, unless you include Nintendogs.

Banjo-Kazooie - I haven't quite gotten to the point of dropping it, but I'm close. Terrible levels, clunky controls, ear-shredding audio, etc. I should have known I wouldn't like it, since I've disliked most of the N64 games I've tried.

Monster Hunter Rise, if you can consider a game dropped after 50 hours.
I can appreciate why it's so popular but at the same time I just couldn't connect with it. Dodge an attack, get a few slow hits in, dodge an attack, get a few slow hits in... repeat for 20 minutes then do it again for another slightly different Monster.
Normally I love the progression in RPGs, levelling up, crafting, absolutely loved the danger and combat in Dragon's Dogma for example, climbing over the monsters, but Rise just didn't work for me.
Maybe I'll go back to it at some point, try a different weapon - that's another thing I missed, having a ranged weapon like a bow then swapping instantly to knives.

On Switch: Final Fantasy IX HD. It's been a year (or two?) since I dropped it. It wasn't bad per se, it just wasn't really gripping me.

Elsewhere: Final Fantasy: Type 0 HD. Only played it for a bit earlier this year. Between the literal dozen party members you get straddled with at the outset game (of which you have to keep all of them levelled), & the "school" system that limits you to a certain amount of "time" for side activities between main missions it was a lot to take in at once & it didn't click with me. Plus, I didn't like the bland over world & copy pasted towns, and it reminded me I do NOT like random encounters at all. (Also, I think it didn't help that I jumped in right after finishing a much more superior JRPG in the form of SMTV). It is a bit of a shame, as there are elements of it I liked.
