So somehow this didn't have a thread? If I somehow missed it, please do let me know.
Anyway, I wasn't thinking about getting it, but I'm a weak weak man and ended up purchasing it some minutes ago.
Slowly played through the first map and it seems fun so far, basic Fire Emblem, without the frills from the other games I've played in the series, like, characters can't pair up and join forces, or so it seems so far. But the core mechanics seem to be there.
I really like the little extra menu, it's super unobtrusive and blends well with the rest of the game. It's like it doesn't feel like a regular emulation with a modern options menu tacked on, I think that's nice. I also like that the rewind feature is turn-based, instead of time based like in the NSO retro games.
Anyone else playing it? Hints, tips, etc. Post them all here.
I will definitely get this, and probably this weekend, but not sure when I’ll get to playing it. Probably not till new year. Good to hear that it’s been done well, though.
I haven't picked this game up as yet. I'm on the verge of being able to buy the entire game with only gold coins. (I know it won't kill me to spend like $1 but I'm almost done with a few games and I want to finish those before buying this one lol) I'm getting another game for Christmas and that will probably give me enough gold coins to cover the game's price lol. Super excited to play it though!
I'm seriously considering buying it, just because its both fairly cheap and really bizarre. I'll get it for the same reason I got Earthbound Beginnings, more or less.
@Eel glad you created a thread because I was about to lol. Anyway, it's super fun and this is someone who's never played a game in the series. Im so happy I gave it a shot. Finished the first two chapters and its really addictive.
My question since I have no clue how the mechanics are, are this. It says 50 playable characters which is great. But, when you have a character die, does that number drop? What i mean is, im worried about getting to the end of the game but I had say 45 characters die in that time and ill only have 5 going into the final battle. Is it one of those permadeath games?
Other than that I love this game. I'll prob be playing it more than dragons dogma this weekend. Now I'm looking to add more series to my systems!
Last question: is shadow dragon on wii u vc(ds game) the same as this?
As far as I know, death is permanent, and even though there's about 50 characters to recruit, you need to be vigilant and investigate the enemy army to scout them or else you could end up killing a few yourself.
Like, in the second chapter, there's two recruitable enemies, and you need to place the right character next to them to talk them into joining your army.
@Eel interesting. I was so amped when 2 guys joined my party that were previously enemies. Ill be more diligent from now on with regards to deaths and what not.
And ill prob snag the ds version on wii u anyway. Can't believe I slept on this series. It seems do advanced for a nes title. Almost on the same level as zelda......almost.
Well it is a relatively late Famicom release; by the time it came out in Japan, the Super Famicom was already visible on the horizon. So I guess it makes sense for it to be a mechanically-advanced NES game.
Kinda Like Kirby's Adventure, but not quite there yet.
@NintendoByNatureShadow Dragon on the DS is indeed a modernized remake of this game. I played Shadow Dragon and enjoyed it, but it's definitely classic, no-frills Fire Emblem. For better and for worse. Permadeath is present with no casual mode, and I will warn you: some units are woefully unbalanced. And even on easier difficulties, the final boss is pretty challenging.

@ToadBrigade oh boy don't take my word for it. I may be easily amused. But, for an nes game it feels ahead of its time( read Eels comment regarding when it launched). But still its really cool and for only $6 and limited release I dont see why you wouldn't try it out.
@NintendoByNature Yep, those units are pawns, but some of those pawns are VERY valuable, especially after you've invested some time into them. You'd feel their losses due to a wrong move or something like unlucky RNG. Naturally, the game will become harder and more complex as you progress.
I did notice you first boot this up yesterday evening, by the way. I was pleased.
