Topic: Episode I: Racer

Never thought this would happen, I used to play this a lot on PC back when PC games were only on discs, lol. Eventually computers got to the point where the game would crash and all that, and I think it even happens on the Steam version. Kinda wished a remake or sequel would happen, and the Direct didn't really specify, so I'm guessing it's just an HD port. Still awesome, though.

Maybe if it does well we could get a sequel or something? More maps, character....maybe the ability to build your own pod racer? (I'm dreaming, I know, lol)

Anyways who else enjoyed this game?

My fondness for Star Wars comes 90% from the video games, and a lot of that is because of Episode 1 Racer, the first Star Wars anything I got into and probably still my favorite of the high speed, futuristic racing games I've played. I still have a lot of nostalgic love for it, even compared to most great games I played as a kid.

Anyone who hasn't played it before I think is in for a treat.

I always wanted to get into this, but I didn't have an N64 and never realised it was on other platforms (not that I had anything that would run it at the time I suspect), so I'm delighted for this.

@Joeynator3000 : Loved this game on N64 and PC. Very stoked to play it with a pro controller on the switch. And yes, I hope it is a serious remaster. One thing that gives me hope it is not just a cheap port is that the graphic showed on the Direct said "Star Wars Racer" and not the original name....

Apparently they are "modernizing" the controls. I hope it becomes standard practice to launch improved versions of older games, like SNK did with adding online to Windjammers.

This and burnout were the highlight of the direct for me. One of my favourite n64 games ever.

@Joeynator3000 I am loving this love letter to older Star Wars games. I hope these keep coming. I want to see the Rogue Squadron games, KOTOR 1+2, the OG Battlefront titles, Shadows of the Empire, and I'd even revisit the Force Unleashed games! (maybe they could finish that story if scumbag Disney would let new "legends" content be made again!)

I'll be getting this for sure. And I need to grab the other SW games on Switch still. So many games I want and want to play, so little time...

I honestly never played too many Star Wars games, Racer was one of them along with the Super games. My all-time favorite was actually Galactic Battlegrounds, I played that one constantly. xp

@Heavyarms55 Loved the unleashed games and wished they finished it.

I still have the original cart from back on the day. I dipped in and out of this (I really didn’t like the film at the time but she and having kids of my own who like it has mellowed me!)

I just hope that the price isn’t ridiculous for it like Jedi Academy is; £18! I’ll just get a copy for Xbox got much less (still got it on pc).

@bluedogrulez We do have screenshots now. Definitely looks cleaned up from the original release, but there's no new models at least. The pods themselves still hold up pretty well, but I'd like to see them do something about the environmental textures, even if it's just giving it a slight blur so there's not visible pixel edges.

As for what game got me into star wars? Shadows of the Empire hands down. It was the third N64 game I played (after Loz:OoT and SM64) and I replayed it so many times. I'd love to see that come back as well with less janky controls, playing the N64 version is painful these days.

@link3710 I got Shadows of the Empire with my N64 for my 17th birthday back in 1999. I was a big fan of the X-wing games on PC, so it was great to see something like that running on a console. I’d love to see it get the HD treatment and updated controls. Seeing as it was a Nintendo game (there was a PC version) it seems a no brainier to get it on the Switch.

The games that ignited my love for Star Wars were the Amiga ports of the Star Wars and Return of the Jedi (never had TESB, though technically I apparently now have them all as yet-to-be unlocked bonuses on Rogue Squadron III) arcade games. It was hearing the voice samples and music that triggered a massive nostalgia boner and I've basically not stopped watching the films since.

@gcunit for me it was X-wing (on 3.5” floppy disc!) that started it all, but it was the superior sequel Tie Fighter that really got me into Star Wars video games. What I wouldn’t do to have a remastered version of that on modern systems (probably need keyboard support though).

So just a port, then. Ah well...maybe one day we could get a sequel or something, that would be awesome.

People forget, they did make a sequel! It's like Episode 2 podracer or something. I don't remember what people think of that one though.

EDIT: ....Huh, so...it was like an expansion...thing? Maybe they took Episode I out of the title for the Switch version because maybe they'll add some stuff from the sequel?

This was a very welcome surprise! One of those games i sold but deeply regretted. I have tried to emulate it several times but even the Best N64 emulators seem to struggle getting it to run properly. I guess now i can just wait for the remaster! Oh and may i just say what a cool idea for a videogame! They took the best part of the movie aside from the duel and made it into a pretty darn good racing game!

I too didn't realize it got a sequel until a few years ago when i stumbled upon it at a used game store. Always was curious if it was nearly as well liked. Did anybody here play it?

@DarthNocturnal Honestly, I'm glad Shadows of the Empire itself isn't canon any longer. The Black Sun was by far the most interesting thing introduced there, but the story itself was... well... meh, and Dash Rendar and Xizor weren't great characters.
