With a demo coming out here soon I figured its time for a thread about this game.
I will be honest I never played the original of this game to be truthfully my knowledge of DQ games is quite lacking. For some reason I never really got into them which is odd because I love RPGs. I played the first one of course and beat it years ago (thank you Nintendo Power) and played 2, 3, and 4 a handful of times when I was a kid. Now I know they had a few DQ games on PS2 and DS which I might go back and play some time but I just recently got into DQ with XI S.
So.after all that I am wondering how do they all connect? I know 1-3 connect but after that I am clueless. While I have been understanding most of XI S without this knowledge I am sure I am missing some things that connect it to the previous games. So before I try out 7 I want to know should I go back and play 4' 5, and 6 before 7 so I can understand 7 or is that not necessary? Also I amnassuming that 7, 8, 9, and 10 will fill in the gaps between 7 and XI S.

storywise 7 doesn't connect to any other mainline DQ game, one of the characters in 7 is a protagonist of a spinoff game Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart but you do not need to play it to enjoy DQ7
@Tasuki some of them are in trilogies and some totally separate. And some of the spinoff games relate to the mainline games. But generally a lot of them are in totally different worlds.
Ok that's good to know. I figure after I finish XI S I will go onto the HD remakes of 1,2, and 3 then go onto 7. I was wondering if I would have to play 4,5,6 before hand.

Dragon Quest 11 also sort of connects to all of them. . . but only in a "dimension hopping side quest" kind of sense.
Anyway, I'm a weirdo who actually quite liked DQ7 when I played it on the PS1. . . at least until a poorly designed element rendered the game unwinnable 20 hours in or so. I am low key looking forward to the remake, it just has the poor fortune to come out when I have a lot of giant RPGs in the qeue ( starting with Trails Beyond the Horizon ).
I support DQ whenever possible. I'm buying a copy on general principle.
Question is, will we get DQ XII before I'm six feet under? It has been in development hell for seven years now. I think S-E were going to go the action/rpg route FF XVI took, but after that sold less-than-expected perhaps S-E pivoted back to turn based?
This is one of the very few Dragon Quest games I haven’t played. When the remake was first announced, I was not sold on its art direction; but after its most recent trailer for its demo, I am completely on board. I’m looking forward to finally experiencing the game.

Yeah, I have long suspected something like that is going on behind the scenes. Maybe in combination with some critical exec really resenting the hell out of the Switch's success and how it might "force" them to actually make the next DQ game for it. I'm solidly in "expecting the worst, will be happy to be pleasantly surprised" territory with DQ12.
Played 2.5 hrs of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Thoughts:
Gameplay: Really good. The speed options make battles brisk and non-tedious. There are some overly long hangs for characters joining you or collecting certain items, but not a big deal.
Graphics: Absolutely top notch. This game is gorgeous.
Audio: OK. So, the voice acting is actually great. And the music is excellent. But the audio mixing and recording quality is absurd! Most amateur hour stuff I've seen in a video game since... well, maybe ever. It's downright atrocious. All the recorded voice lines have this insane reverb like it was recorded with a $3 mic in church hall, and the volume fluctuations are all over the place! One minute it's too loud like they're talking right up to the mic, the next minute I can hardly hear what's being said. Had to turn "Night Mode" on my Ambeo soundbar to equalize the volume a bit. They should be ashamed of this. Whatever rag-tag company they hired to mix the audio... I can't believe they're in business. Even YouTube videos I watch from no-name content creators have better audio clarity and volume equalization than this.
Overall, I really do like it despite the embarrassing audio mixing. It sucks but I can look past it. Real shame though. If they'd just used, like, literally any other studio for the recording and mixing this game could have been near flawless. It's not as bad using handheld audio, and may not seem so offensive from standard TV speakers. But if you have a surround setup or a quality soundbar, probably gonna get a little annoyed by it.
Downloaded the demo but not quite sure when I will get to it as I am deep into Echoes of Wisdom. Is there a time limit as to when you have to play/finish it for the free item?

Special item for playing demo is pretty common for dragon quest games. They don't generally have a time limit. Think of it less as a pre-release gift and more just a way they use to get people to play the demos. Dragon Quest demos tend to be quite good so probably convince a lot of people on the edge to buy the full game.
