Question for those who collected everything Chapter 6:
Any hints for the heart in Reflections? I got the far left one and the far right one but the middle two are making no sense to me. The internet just wants to give me the combinations and that's real lame.

Edit: I got it. Found a hint and within a second I figured it out. I knew that would happen. Ofc how you were supposed to know is definitely unclear. The symbols they picked are not the best...

Well, I've beaten Chapter 8, which is some sense means I've 'completed' the game. At least the core experience, anyway.

Easily the best 'hard' platformer I've ever played. Never really got into Meat Boy for some reason, and... well, I haven't really played anything else apart from some particularly devious Mario Maker levels. But this game it stellar is stands out proudly against almost any backdrop.

I dread to think what the Chapter 8 B-Side is gonna be like, as I had a hard enough time with the main level. I definitely want to try and complete as much of the extra content as I can though. The game feels like a love letter to... itself, and it'd be a shame not to read every line.

Also, I am unreasonably proud of this manoeuvre given that it was almost a complete fluke:

@Maxz Nice. I didn't have quite as good luck with those bumpers. There is a way up as well. I visited the room above but wasn't sure what to do so I continued because I know I'll have to come back later anyways.

I haven't played the main game for few days since I'm still trying to get 0 deaths in PICO-8 Celeste. I'll post a video from yesterday once I can. I was so close.

It's its, not it's.

Here's my attempt from yesterday.

I stopped breathing by the last couple of rooms. Will I finally succeed? Am I going to die yet again? At least I could breath again once it was over. Paused the game for few seconds and started over. I've played the PICO-8 game for at least 3 hours in total so far and enjoyed every single run. And this is not even something the game wants you to do, I just decided I wanted to reach the end with 0 deaths. I haven't even finished the Core yet and I have bunch of collectibles in the main game but I can't ply the main game while listening to podcasts or something. I want to hear the music. That's why the PICO-8 Celeste is perfect. It has good music as well but I've heard it so many times that I can listen to something else while playing it.

It's its, not it's.

@Maxz Thank you. I had to take a look at actual speedruns afterwards. Fun fact, there are only 6 times in the 100% category, the best being 2:29. There seemed to be a lot of shortcuts I didn't notice or was too afraid to try out. I kind of want to get a better time but I think it's time to 100% the main game first.

It's its, not it's.

The game just updated recently, and now all of my speedruns have been reset! I worked really hard on those

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've now polished off all the strawberries (assuming Chapter 6 doesn't have any), and am now after the final hearts. Aside from the Chapter 8 B-Side I still need to complete, all three of the remaining hearts are blue.

I know that Chapter 7's heart relies on picking up all the jewels (of which I'm missing the first and third). But for Chapter 5 and 6 I'm pretty stumped. Any clues would be welcomed.

And yes, I know 'Google it' is the answer to everything, but Google tends to be pretty up front about things. What I'm really after is a hint or two. Thanks!

Chapter 5 you have to use a bubble the wrong way, and the entrance to chapter 6's heart is in the same room as the cassette's entrance.

Thanks @MasterWario. Sorry for leaving the reply so late.

Anyway, I came back to say... I beat Celeste! Or at least, I beat every level in Celeste! All 24 of them.

I am a big ball full of buzziness. Definitely the hardest game I've ever beaten by a long stretch. But fantastic. Terrifying, but also charming and fantastic. What a brilliantly designed game.

I think I might hang this on my wall:

I just watched IGN's video review. The guy loved the game, but it looks like all these retro-like platformers that are frustrating and silly. This game must be special because of the story and music, the visuals don't attract me though and I'm afraid that I would find the gameplay frustrating. I usually don't like these games but I love real classic platformers even when they get difficult.

Has anybody something bad to say about the game? Comments above suggest that a certain level of frustration exists...

I loved the game, but I also enjoy a high level of difficulty and am usually pretty tolerant with frustration. It IS a difficult game, though it never feels unfair, and it has a lot of technical settings that can lower the difficulty considerably. The level design is impeccable and the story was very engaging, a twist on your typical "dark protagonist" trope. The visuals did their job just fine even if the 8-bit look is overdone these days.

Levels can be really long sometimes, but if you don't mind that, I say its a solid experience. 10/10 for me.

@BlueOcean Well, I don't have anything bad to say about it but I just wanted to say the game is special because the controls are very tight and the level design is amazing. The story and music (which are really good as well) are just a nice bonus. And even though it uses pixel art, I wouldn't consider it a retro platformer. The controls and mechanics are very modern and I don't think it could be played on an older platform.

Some indies are just trying to bank on people's nostalgia, but games like Celeste use pixel art because HD graphics take so much more time to make and it's just a lot easier for a small team of people to be able to focus on the gameplay.

If you like challenging but fair platformers then I think you'd like this game. It is difficult but you respawn immediately and have unlimited tries and deaths are always because of your mistakes, not the game's. It's very satisfying to enter a room and think "How the heck am I supposed to do this?" and then after some deaths it clicks and you get through it like it's nothing.

It also has an Assist mode where you can tweak various settings to make the game easier in whatever way you want, like invincibility, dash length, game speed, etc.

Thanks for the replies, that is exactly what I wanted to know. I have tons of games but I think that I'll get it when I see it on a sale.

LadyCharlie

the Limited Run Games physical edition is up for pre-order.

question: how hard is this game?
I'm the type of girl who absolutely cannot handle a game where I'll die 70 times trying to make a single jump. I know the game has an assist mode, but it doesn't sound like it'll do enough to increase my enjoyment.

is this game not for me?

@CharlieSmile Probably not.

The Assist Mode makes the game as easy as you want it to be, though. To the point that you can set it up so that it's impossible to die. So if you want to just check out the story or get past a particular annoying stretch, that's an option too.

It is definitely that kind of game at its base, where you're expected to die a bunch and just try again and again. Its not as bad as you think, since dying never results in going back farther than a few seconds, but plenty of failure is expected regardless.

However, I have actually heard that the assist mode does a lot to accommodate this difficulty. There's options to slow the game down to 90%, 80%, etc, and I think even an invincibility mode. There's lots of options to get you to the kind of play you're expecting, so for that reason, I'd say you should try it out.

I think that if you've heard controversy about the assist mode, it's about the decision to include it at all, from those purists who think the game should remain at its intended difficulty. The assist mode itself is very robust and more complete than any other that I've seen, and should be able to accommodate anyone.

I feel like a game that explores narrative themes of fighting mental illness, while providing intense gameplay difficulty, is really counter-intuitive

How so? The mountain itself that the protagonist needs to climb is a metaphor for the hardships of her struggle.

If anything, making the climb a cakewalk would trivialize her mental illness.
