@retrogamerandrew@oorwullie and any others here who have ENTER THE GUNGEON. Is the gameplay more shooter than dungeon crawler/RPG? As a shooter fan would you suggest this is a rogue lite I might get on with? I've played a handful of 'rogue lite' games but typically I prefer games with a set beginning, middle and end. But something about GUNGEON keeps pulling me to it. Shall I pull the trigger on it?

@Lroy I'm still good to go. But I gotta travel for work next month. So while I can still play, I won't be able to record footage unless it's the weekend when I'm home. And I prefer to record every chance I get. I guess I can use that time to take it easy.
I haven't gotten around to getting Gungeon yet. But now I see it as kind of a Shock Troopers RPG with the dodge rolling, which is very encouraging
@Lroy well EtG can be considered a full-fledged shooter, specifically a bullet-hell when boss fights are involved. We can say it has a beginning/middle/end... but you'll have quite a hard time pulling yourself out of the first phase in the first runs.
The choice of different characters boils down to different starting trinkets/passives/guns, but 99% of trinkets/passives/guns can be aquired by ANY toon in a playthrough... so we're not talking about night vs day.
You will get the huge replayability which is the rogue-lite selling point, but you will also have what we can define a "main quest" (trying to build the weapon that can kill your past) to pursue.
As with most roguelite I think that the journey is more important than the destination itself, if you know what I mean.
TLDR: ...pull it (repeatedly!)
Jokes aside, as a shooter fan this is an indie you can't miss.
I double dipped on D1 myself and couldn't be more happy.
@GrailUK@MasterLeon@QualityBeats - So gentlemen, can we expect a new challenge game announced this evening or are we taking a break?
I'm up for carrying on and doing a challenge game next week? Who's with me?
Well after my week-long break (period during which i managed to end The Mummy Demastered and give a little more love to Aqua Kitty UDX and SF: Reloaded) I'll be more than happy to rejoin this little group.
@meppi64 Was just putting my kids to bed and only now reading your Saturn story: would love to hear that first hand over a pint. Inspiring stuff and love to hear these types of personal gaming histories. Been a real pleasure getting to know you and the other chaps here. The Switch's first year has been amazing in this respect. Totally rekindling and motivating me to reconnect with my arcade gaming roots along with like minded folk. 🍻
Thanks.
It's really one of the systems that got it's hooks into me so deep that it'll probably never let go at this point.
Feeling that passionate about a system, not because of silly console war things or anything like that, but because it puts out tons of games that feel like they were made just for you is something I've been sorely missing ever since the Dreamcast days. The Switch is certainly on the right track there I have to say, but I just need more.
Whenever I burn out from the current day gaming, I always revert back to my arcade days one way or another.
Right now I'm extremely burned out on the western AAA treadmill to the point where I don't think I'll ever go back there. Luckily, this time, there are weekly arcade games being released on a current system, so that really helps me in keeping my passion for the hobby going.
Otherwise, I would most likely spend a lot more time watching TV series and Asian films instead of playing games.
It used to be Sega systems that always brought me back, like with the Saturn, or the Mega Drive before.
For instance, in the later years of the NES, I felt like I was outgrowing gaming completely, till I went to the fair with a good friend at the time. We ended up coming across a little game called Final Fight and played pretty much nothing else that weekend.
Somehow he convinced me that Final Fight was available for the just released Mega Drive, which blew my mind. So I started saving and finally was able to buy a Mega Drive along with Altered Beast in our local Tandy (lol). Which was the only shop that even carried the Mega Drive around here at that time.
All the others were Nintendo only.
We didn't know anything about the system and got all our info from looking at the back of the boxes in store and from reading the pamphlets that came with the games.
One game that really stood out was Streets of Rage which I soon got and we must have spent the next couple of months playing it religiously.
So yeah, Sega always brought me back, so it saddens me to see the state they are in these days.

Just want to throw in another recommendation for Enter the Gungeon.
Absolutely brilliant game!
A little tough at first as you get to know the game, and you might want to customise the controls a bit, as I find the original layout not really optimal. (ask me again when you pick it up)
I just went back to Stern Pinball Arcade myself after putting in 25 hours into Ghostbusters already.
Still haven't begun to get bored of that table. Not in the slightest.
There was a new update for it this week that included a TATE mode in portable as well as in docked mode.
Well for the digital release anyway as the physical version still hasn't gotten the updates.
Didn't think it would make any difference for me personally, but I tried it out in tabletop mode and I absolutely love it. You can see the whole table so much better, like in a real pinball cabinet.
Been playing it last night in bed with the screen propped up against my legs and the joy cons disconnected.
Now I kinda want something like this, but in vertical position. lol
I’m ok with continuing on. If it’s something I can’t manage, I’ll take a step back. If the consensus is don’t take a break then we continue forward, which is fine. Mutation Nation actually felt really light on frustration, which helps keep back the urge of needing a break as well.
Either way, I do think we will need to schedule a break eventually. Or risk having this board fade into obscurity once Dark Souls and the rest of the SW lineup for 2018 gets heavy and steals away attention from these coin-op games.
Thanks for helping me decide on whether to give ENTER THE GUNGEON a shot: I'll be picking it up in the near future 👍
Enjoy the Direct tonight peeps (any arcade announcement will make me smile and think of you lot 😉) and good luck to those doing any last runs of MUTATION NATION. I've been rooted to my initial score all week and not found much time to try and improve on it. What subsequent runs I have done have only seen me score lower, lol! ☺️
I'll pop back in here after I watch the Direct tonight to see if we have chosen a game for next week 👌
Have a splendid afternoon and evening folks.

Also, just played my first game of Sterredenn.
Seems absolutely spot on so far. No idea how I missed the original release of this in 2016.
From the graphics to the animation and sound, everything is pretty much exactly as it should be. Laser beams penetrating space ships actually have impact and not just two sprites that cross over like in games that try to do this but end up getting it wrong.
Also the bullet patters are really wonderful. Lots of thought went into them, I can tell.
This is also something that many western shoot em ups get so very wrong, but this one really nails.
Lots of variation in them with each big enemy and seeing them actually building up to certain attacks really clicks with me.
Love that bullet spread on one of the first bosses that makes you want to move to the center of the screen and then obliterates you with a mega-laser when you do just that.
Fantastic first impression. Hopefully this game can keep it up. If it does, it'll quickly become one of my favourite original titles of this year.

@meppi64 Forgot STEREDENN (?) was out today. Man, my projected budget for games spending has already gone totally out of the window this year. Was meant to be cutting back, lol! I'll have to wait for this one but will add it to the wishlist to buy.

@Lroy Hehe, I know what you mean.
I was going to cut back severely on buying games since I have way too many already.
Then the Switch came out and I'm buying more then ever.
At least I have almost completely stopped buying games for the other systems, so that compensates somewhat. /cries...

Terribly sorry I did not partake this week chaps. Would you believe the nerve of Nintendo scheduling a Direct the only free night I had to play some Mutation Nation? The nerve of some companies...
