Nintendo Everything have posted gameplay of GATE OF DOOM on Switch due out later today (in Europe too we hope).

https://nintendoeverything.com/johnny-turbos-arcade-gate-of-d...

Looks like there are some interesting and varied visual options to choose from and generally the presentation is a bit different to Hamster and ZeroDiv's arcade line.

Who's gonna be picking this one up?

SAMURAI ACES is also out from ZeroDiv today. My fellow arcade shmup fans adding Psikyo's very first game to their collections?

@Lroy Not sure about Gate of Doom, doesn't look like a game I'd have enjoyed even 30 years ago haha. I'll probably end up getting but not today. Samurai Aces is a certainty though.

Magical Drop 3 is next week's Neo Geo game along with a new Arcade Archives title from Irem called Heroic Episode. An overhead vertical run n gun/shooter combo. I'll skip MD3 but Heroic Episode I'll get for sure.

@OorWullie Looks like I may have to wait on GATE OF DOOM too as it hasn't been listed on the NL Euro eShop update list?

I'll certainly be getting MAGICAL DROP III when funds allow.

SAMURAI ACES may be bought tonight if I can drag myself away from some final runs at PULSTAR πŸ˜‰ and that Irem game you mentioned sounds ace. I'll look up some gameplay footage.

@antster1983 OK, this game has to be related to Commando / Capcom in some way. Like, the background artist used to work for Capcom or the lead programmer worked on Commando and remembered most of the coding.

As you may have already heard, REAL BOUT FATAL FURY is the next Hamster Neo Geo title after tomorrow's drop of SENGOKU 2. Anyone know what is coming after that? Any predictions?

STARFORCE is the Arcade Archive release tomorrow alongside SENGOKU 2. Any clue what is coming down the pipe after that?

Always enjoy anticipating what arcade games are coming each week.

I have a quick question regarding the Neo Geo titles - I didn't want to clutter up the place with a new thread.

For hi score saves on the game's own leaderboards (not online rankings) to be kept after the game is closed, do I need to create interrupt save data from the menu (ie save state)? I'm guessing most Neo Geo games didn't save hi scores after power off.

@monkeyspasm Can't speak for the actual hardware but I've just been playing BLAZING STAR on Switch for the community high-score challenge we have going this week.

See here: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/arcade_shm...

My game does save my high-scores on the in-game local leaderboard. As well as the online Global Leaderboards. The game prompts you to select your user profile on start up and I think therein saves your game data.

Had a go on MAGICIAN LORD this evening and erm.. even credit feeding the game is kicking my arse. Anyone else got this one? Are you a fan or otherwise? I'm lukewarm at present but fancied giving a go as I picked it up with my Gold Points and it is a early and quite unique title in the Neo Geo library.

@monkeyspasm
Just checked Joy Joy Kid to make sure and that seems to be indeed how it works.
Your regular Switch save for the game only saves your settings.
So control layout, screen settings and all that stuff.
No actual high scores or game progress.

The manual interrupt saves do save these things.

And yeah, as far as I'm aware, there was no way to save high scores on a Neo Geo. Even though there was a memory card released for it, it was only used to save progress in certain games if my memory is correct. Don't have one to test that out though.

@monkeyspasm

I have an issue where it many times does not record the high score in the game, but it does on the global leaderboards. Happens 50% of the time, across every single Neo Geo game I’ve played. So if you can’t seem to get the prompts to input your initials, it might be that glitch.

@Lroy hehe. That's the opposite of what I just encountered. Lol
Could it be that Hi-score and Caravan mode are set up to save the scores, since that's the point of those extra modes?
While the regular game, both western and Japanese versions act like a standard NeoGeo without any extra options?

Edit: oh wait. Just tried Shock Troopers Japanese version and my scores are indeed there without interrupt saving.
So strange. Might be a game specific thing, depending on when Hamster released them.
They might not have put that in at first. Just a guess though.

We've not been updating this thread with every release announced but just a reminder that AERO FIGHTERS 3 is the ACA Neo Geo title coming tomorrow. Think it might be SENGOKU 3 the week after?

Late

I guess this is a good place for my question.

I've gotten back to fighting games thanks to Samurai Shodown and I recently picked up King of Fighters '98. Can anyone here share some tips on how to get into the game? I had a 10 year break between playing Samurai Shodown (Genesis/Mega Drive) and Samurai Shodown IV on Switch so I'm pretty much starting fresh with the fighting genre, other than Super Smash Bros. which I'm good at but I don't think those skills really help here.

I know the mechanics for King of Fighters (4 kinds of hops, etc.) and I can execute the moves (though not as consistently as I would want to) but I'm having a hard time against the CPU. It's the arcade version so it doesn't seem to have a practice mode and the instruction manual doesn't have all the moves for each character either. I set the timer to slowest since it cannot be turned off completely. I can currently get to the fourth fight before hitting a wall. Should I just make the CPU a bit easier and crank it up little by little?

Also, what is the best way to approach Mai? She spams her fans and once I get close, she kicks me away. I've tried rolling, blocking and jumping over them but she seems to be able to react to each of those. I'm just too slow.

It's kind of awesome how many fighting games the Switch is getting, thanks to old arcade games like King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown and new games such as SNK Heroines, Blade Strangers and ARMS. Same goes for shoot 'em ups, though I haven't really gotten back to them yet.

Yes, I think you're right, it seems to save on the in-game hiscore table for some games and not others. After a Google, not many Neo Geo games saved high scores from the look of it.

I've taken to creating an interrupt save when I get a top score. No biggie.

Thanks for the responses chaps. I'm new here, but have been on sister site Eurogamer for 15 years!

As an arcade addict from back in the day, I love Arcade Archives, especially the Neo Geo stuff, which I've bought quite a few of already.

The Switch is just perfect for retro gaming. I even bought the Namco Collection for Β£30 despite having them on a MAME cab, I love this little machine. Looking forward to Moon Patrol and Ghost Pilots

@Late I'm in a similiar situation and as my KoF '98 approach to battles seems to be button mashing, I'll leave more skilled players to comment on this ☺️
