@Beeki : Save data for most Switch games is stored in the console's system memory (and in cases of some online games, stored online). Save data is not stored on the cartridge. You can use the same cartridge on multiple Switch consoles, and yes, you will be able to have multiple islands, but only one per console.

@Jarester : No, it isn't. Save data for Switch games is saved to the console's system memory, not the cartridge. On previous Nintendo handheld consoles, however, save data was usually saved to the cartridge itself (though there were a few exceptions to the rule, such as Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and some Game Boy games used a password system in order for publishers to save money on paying for the more expensive cartridges with a writable partition to store save data).

And there is a small number of Switch games which store save data on the "cloud", so to speak, mainly online games such as Fortnite, and I believe Tetris 99 also uploads save data to the cloud as well (as well on the console itself).

then why were people worried about buying ac digitally being that it doesn't have a cloud save atm, yet having a cartridge guarantee's it's safety??

@Jarester : Who are these people? People are worried about not being able to transfer their save data because Animal Crossing's save data is console locked as opposed to profile locked (as is generally the case). The way that Animal Crossing's save data works is that there is only island per console and users must share the island (at present, the island cannot be transferred to another console without Nintendo's intervention).

Switch cartridges do not store save data. If one's console becomes lost or breaks, unless Nintendo has silently allowed Animal Crossing to upload save data to the cloud in the background (without allowing the user to directly access this data), there is no other way to safeguard or recover it.
