So I heard that Sega Ages will have Sonic and Phantasy Star in it along with 15 others. So I did some research about Sega Ages and they're that Sega thing in Japan that has enhanced ports with 3D graphics including the Japan only enhanced ports (Which meant by remake) of Phantasy Star games.

So I'm wondering if we're finally getting remastered versions of Phantasy Star and more when Sega Ages hits the US this summer. Do we have any more information regarding that?

You're talking about those PS2 Sega Ages 2500 releases, right? And the 3D Sega Ages on PS2?

If so, these will be completely different.
Those were very poorly made 3D remakes of classic games and were of questionable quality to say the least.
Sega pulled out of the deal and put M2 on the remaining of the series, where things started to pick up as we started getting actually emulated version of their classics, with tons of bells and whistles, not to mention excellent emulation.

M2 are the same people who did the 3DS Sega classics and also are doing the ShotTriggers releases on PS4 and Xbox One.
In short, they are the cream of the crop when it comes to releasing (and reworking) classic titles.
While making sure that the games play exactly as they should in a pixel perfect fashion, they also tend to improve certain aspects of them and even create special modes that didn't exist before.
Like putting in stages or bosses into games that only appeared in an obscure rendition of said title.

In other words, if there's one company you want doing classic releases, always put your money on M2 as they will never let you down.

So this M2 is doing the Sega Ages ports and they did the Sega 3D Classics? Fantastic, I have something to look forward to then.

I'm sure they will go above and beyond your average port.

For the Sonic games, it would be preferable if they were the Christian Whitehead ports. It’s criminal that the Sonic 1 and 2 ports are mobile only. For the other games, if M2 is behind it, they’ll do a good job. Here’s hoping we get Ristar!

So many great 80s and 90s arcade games made by SEGA. I really hope M2 dig deep and bring us some of these classics. They are almost spoilt for choice.

I am hoping we get all the AM2 games from the 80's and 90's. I have some Japenese Saturn games (Outrun, Powerdrift, Galaxy Force 2, Afterburner, Spaceharrier, Super Hang On, Fantasy Zone) that all have the 'Ages' symbol on the case. Hopefully we also get the Virtua Series. I assume we will never see Daytona or Sega Rally due to licence issues, but one can hope.

We might get Daytone in its 'Sega Racing Classic' guise.

As for Sega Rally, they could just rebrand the cars. I live in hope

2 more Sega Ages titles announced along with some new features that will be included.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Gain Ground

"For Sonic the Hedgehog, it was announced that elements from the 3DS version will be included, such as the added Spin Dash. Also, it’ll come with the Mega Play arcade version.

For Thunder Force IV, Styx Mode from the SEGA Saturn edition is in. Online leaderboards will also be supported.

With Phantasy Star, M2 is bringing over the added features from Phantasy Star Collection. You’ll be able to change the walk speed, difficulty, and more."

@Gerald Daytonna could happen despite the license as Sega clearly have rights to it. They produced or are producing a 4th game for the arcades and the original was made backwards compatible on Xbox One. However, don't expect to see anything Outrun related as that license I think has expired. It's why I think they pulled the digital game from Xbox 360/PS3 a few years back.

@FragRed I think Outrun will be ok. Both the 3D classics and Shenmue 2 versions don't have the Ferrari. Only the Saturn version has the original car

I see Outrun as more likely than Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

"Shimomura senior producer "I think the title line-up may be expanded to the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast""

"They decided after doing the last 3D Classics wave, it would be a waste to just leave it there.
Alex Kidd was chosen because of how popular he was on the Virtual Console in Europe...it's likely they will continue to use data like that for deciding future releases.
Gain Ground won't be the only arcade release. There will be more.
15 Titles is the start depending how well it goes they will do more.
There will be Saturn and Dreamcast titles in the future as well, if it goes well beyond the first 15 games.
Rieko Kodama is a producer on the new Sega Ages project..."

@meppi64 Last week SNK. This week Sega. I...I...hdu9ah9d...speechless!
Just waiting on you Konami and Capcom.

@GrailUK I'm not expecting anything from Konami at this point in time seeing as how they are barely even a video game company anymore. ;P

It would be way too funny to see M2 going "ok, Sega, so you only want to put Shenmue on PS and Xbox? We'll make our own damn Switch versions then!" lol

@meppi64 Good to know Gain Ground will be the arcade version, it's a game I've never actually played. Any good? About the confirmation there will be Saturn and Dreamcast titles..... YESSSSS!!!

I know it depends on the success of the first 15 but with how well Hamster titles and (I think) Psikyo titles have been selling its a given Sega classics will do OK too. I've no idea if Psikyo have been selling well in the west but I know one of the Zerodiv crew reported they were very happy with Japanese sales. Plus they are far more niche than Sega so I think it's a given the Sega Ages titles will be a sales success. They obviously done alright on 3DS.

@OorWullie @Meppi64 @GrailUK Fellas, between us lot from the Switch Arcade Community and the high-score pilots. SEGA AGES will sell fine 😉

The fact we already seem to be getting info on a mixture of SEGA's arcade and console games possibly coming to Switch is hugely positive. I'd love a range of releases which spans the creative heights of SEGA from 80s to 00s.

@OorWullie Gain Ground is a very strange game, especially for an arcade game.
But it certainly is a good one. I played the Mega Drive game a bunch back in the day and really enjoyed it.
I'm almost positive that I played the arcade version as well on a more modern system. Perhaps that Sega Ages PS2 release I think. Don't recall much of it. :-/
I'd love to see a little MegaDrive game called Crackdown make a return.
It was certainly not one of the top games on the system or anything, but I had a lot of fun with it as well.

There's quite a lot of Mega Drive games like that actually. Another that comes to mind is Jewel Master.

Oh and I NEED Alien Storm on Switch!

Needless to say, I'll be buying all the M2 Sega releases, after all I was crazy enough to import a Japanese 3DS for these, even though I have all the EU releases. Sad we never got every single game released here though.

Hehe, I was thinking the same thing actually.

Also, I understand people going "Sonic 1 again? ugh"
Yet, they should remember that a game like that is a huge money maker compared to a lot of other releases, so it really does make sense.
Just look at it as Sonic 1 making it possible to port 3 obscure or lesser known games to the system thanks to the revenu it brings in for this series.

The Mega Drive (Genesis) was a fantastic console. So many great games from the well known to the more obscure.

Even if we only consider one genre, say, shoot-em-ups as the form is popular among many of us here. During the 16-Bit days the Mega Drive was plucky enough to trade punches with THE shooter system of the day, the PC-ENGINE.

I'm stoked we are getting THUNDER FORCE IV. Would love that to be followed by Compile's M.U.S.H.A
