So, a lot of people on here have debated about the possibility of the NX. Those who feel it isn't a hybrid have often said that by definition, it would make the system an underpowered home console ad overpriced handheld. Everybody who has debated this topic has done so under the impression that if it is a hybrid, all games are available on both.
Well, what if it is just a hybrid in the sense that all the hardware is connected, but the software is still separated (atleast in some cases). Just like how some games only play on the New 3DS and not the regular 3DS. what if the NX is a hybrid, providing a home console and handheld all in one box/one connected unit, but the software isn't always necessarily playable on both.
If a game is "weaker", like say an indie title, then it can play on both the home unit and portable unit. However, if it is a top of the line title then maybe it's too powerful for the handheld piece.
After all, there's no requirement saying that in order for the NX hybrid to be revolutionary and/or successful, every single piece of software has to be playable on both. Maybe our beloved NX just has a little notification on each piece of software that says "Portable" with a little symbol if it's a portable-capable title.
If its a hybrid and the console itself is using powerful chips like the wall street journal article suggests then it would be as simple as having x86 architecture so that games can be scaled quickly and cheaply between the console and the portable unit. Not to mention Nintendo is likely using the new set of AMD GCN (new being between 2013-2015) chips which arn't too expensive to mass produce at all.
Eh even in November 2016, Nintendo should be able to make a Wii u level hybrid for $250. Nintendo doesn't need as much as the other publishers. The key advantage is that it unites all their teams on one platform, so they can pump out software much quicker because even with third party support, the ultimate reason anyone buys Nintendo hardware is for Nintendo software.
When people talk about a hybrid the assumption is that it'd be somehow different. That it would be one product that would cover both markets. What you're describing is something I'd call "just" a portable system, not a "hybrid'.
Not that I think it's not likely. I just wouldn't call it a hybrid......

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
I would want a console / Game Pad combo like the Wii U, however, the Game Pad would be able to take cartridges and be backwards compatible with 3DS cartridges whereas the console takes discs and is backwards compatible with the Wii U. You will be able to play the Game Pad away from the console but large downloaded games would require proximity to the console.
The Game Pad screen would rotate so that you can play the screen vertically or horizontally to the controls.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
