@MrCarlos46 Right. All these years with the Switch, I assuaged myself with the presumption that the OS was only simplistic because the Switch 1 wasn't powerful enough.
But recently I've accepted that perhaps another reason is because Nintendo made a deliberate decision to go that route. The Wii U was struggling, and Nintendo needed a major pivot. At the same time, they also needed to play it safe, for maximum mainstream appeal. And at the end of the day, a simple, bare-bones UI is generally acceptable for most people.

It's actually because of that reason why I'm worried the Switch 2 will contain a similarly basic UX. Nintendo will be concerned about recreating the success of the Switch 1, and may not want to deviate too far from it.

Regardless we’re still not sure if the Switch 2 UI is actually just gonna be the Switch UI ported over with improvements or actually be something new based on the Switch UI but adding new features and maybe customization.

@Ulysses Another thing I wanna see the Switch 2 do which has more to do for the system settings side: Separate English, French, Spanish and Portuguese into their own regional variants as shown here (based on alphabetical order), similar to PS4 and PS5:

1. English (United Kingdom)
2. English (United States)
3. Español (España)
4. Español (Latinoamérica)
5. Français (Canada)
6. Français (France)
7. Português (Brasil)
8. Português (Portugal)

@MrCarlos46 Speaking of regional differences, I hope it becomes easier to update Japanese region games on a Western region Switch 2. I still am not sure whether my Japanese region Sakuna game is updated because of this.

Not sure if this also applies for European games.

And more towards languages and regions, even if the Switch 2 eShop language settings aren’t changed to be determined by the system language, they should at least change it so English is one of the supported languages for regions that don’t. Examples I made on this:

1.
Country: Belgium
Languages: Dutch, French (France), English (United Kingdom)

2.
Country: Japan
Languages: Japanese, English (United States)

3.
Country: South Korea
Languages: Korean, English (United States)

4.
Country: Brazil
Languages: Portuguese (Brazil), English (United States)

5.
Country: Spain
Languages: Spanish (Spain), English (United Kingdom)

6.
Country: Switzerland
Languages: French (France), German, Italian, English (United Kingdom)

7.
Country: Italy
Languages: Italian, English (United Kingdom)

8.
Countries: Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru (and then also if they choose to expand more into Latin America)
Languages: Spanish (Latin America), English (United States); basically like the US eShop

9.
Countries: Germany, Austria
Languages: German, English (United Kingdom)

10.
Country: France
Languages: French (France), English (United Kingdom)

11.
Country: Netherlands
Language: Dutch, English (United Kingdom)

12.
Country: Portugal
Language: Portuguese (Portugal), English (United Kingdom)

@Ulysses Same here I feel like the best approach in that case would be to have the default theme be bare bones, but have more colorful/musical ones available to select in settings.

I'm of the opinion it will be a new layout. In other words, it won't be a direct continuation of the Switch 1 UI. It may organize buttons and tools similarly, but I feel like the firmware will try to distinguish itself from the Switch 1, especially at first glance. Even if practically speaking it's not that much different, I think Nintendo will want consumers to have an immediate impression of "Oh, this is different. This clearly is a new thing from the Switch 1."

I mean, here’s an example of where I’m going with what Nintendo could do for the Switch 2 UI.

@Novamii There was that one leak that said the UI would be a modernized version of the Wii U UI and bring back animated backgrounds, but would that work these days?

@MrCarlos46
yeah i remember some other systems having the ability to set screenshots as backgrounds like the vita and always liked that.

im hoping that the main menu has a bunch of other customization options too alongside traditional folders, keeping the basic menu simple so its fast and accessible but giving options for those who want to tinker with stuff (i know with games it can be hit or miss with nintendo when it comes to options with some games like mario vs DK not even having an options menu iirc but would be nice to have some of the features wiiu had like colour coded folders and whatnot as an option)

when it comes to transferring things over im hoping its as quick and simple as possible, the same thing goes with account related stuff, ideally you would be able to just log into your account and then set the system as primary so you wont need to keep going through online checks to access your digital stuff (outside of NSO)

One thing they should do for Switch 1 to Switch 2 or Switch 2 to Switch 2 transfers: Show off some animations while the transfer is in progress.

@Ulysses Coming back here ahead of June 5 because after the setup leak, it showed us what the UI would be. It’s mostly similar to the Switch although icons are rounded this time around and the highlight uses different colors. Even the HOME Menu icon sounds have been changed from the original Switch.

The one thing we have all been waiting for: are there new themes?

No, it’s just black and white like on Switch 1, although this time they’re called Basic Light Mode and Basic Dark Mode. Does the new naming imply these are just meant to be lighting options (kinda like on other devices) and not actual console themes as we’d expect?

@Ulysses The strange thing I noticed is that the Basic Light/Dark Mode naming only applies for American English, Canadian French, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.

There was a video by someone from Australia that set up their Switch 2. They set theirs to British English and when they showed the Themes tab it still used Basic White and Basic Black. Seems like any language that is not handled by Nintendo of America is not using the Basic Light/Dark Mode naming.

I do like the new sounds for the icons - small change, but makes me smile. They're very good.
