If anyone has any ideas for Splatoon 4, this is the place. I think an open world where you can go through all the cities would be great. For online, maybe a battle royale mode. It would need to be well thought out of course, but it could be great. Maybe some customizable weapons where you can mess with the stats and do a paint job.
Transform the game into a world territory quest where you are constantly warring with other inklings to carve a defense for your factions "territory" (you choose which faction you start in when making your character).
Each territory would be distinct biomes with wildly diverse cultures and creatures and each would have their own unique benefits and strengths/weaknesses which would factor into your choice of which faction to start in.
Then the meta game would be a global map that is constantly changing colors based on hard pushes from one territories factions or another. If a faction conquests enough territory, you can actually "take over" their territory, providing debuffs to any players who chose that unfortunate faction.
In between the global battles for the important gamewide goals, there would be constantly arena style battles players who need a break from the "main track". You can find them in every biome, and these side quests provide story incentives as well as loot for customization of your inkling. Certain loot and items are only obtainable by engaging these types of battles, and here is where players familiar with old Splatoon can keep playing games in the old style within the broader context of the unfolding world narrative.
Players who perform best during takeover of an enemies territory will temporarily be granted king status and can gain control over how the territory looks at the moment. Only the king would be able to control the style of buildings you might see in a biome, or the design of the territories flag. So you'd gain some superficial autonomy as a badge of honor until someone conquers your territory back.
So your game would shift depending on your role, what task you are taking on at the moment (constant world territory engagement or emergent arena side quest battles), and how the factions are performing at the moment.
