It's clearly very powerful for a handheld device, but not to the extent that it's going to be the end of history, so far as games consoles go. Are people going to be happy paying more than the price of a Steam Deck, a Series S or even a PS5 Digital Edition for one? Sure, this forum is deep in Nintendo fandom so plenty of us will, but they also need wide adoption from the mainstream audience to make this work.
GameCube on NSO (another prediction of mine) is a mixed bag. Sure, it's nice to revisit those games but - just like with the N64 - it also means that we're getting decades old versions of games where there are far more recent remakes that ought to be within the whit of Nintendo to just port to the Switch, let alone the Switch 2. I'm looking at you, Wind Waker.
Mainly though, I'm just not feeling it with the first-party lineup. Mario Kart World is the one game that's hitting expectations. The rest just look like a mixture of what would be possible on the OG Switch and downright shovelware. Indeed Metroid Prime 4 is still coming to it (albeit without the 4K rendering) and I'll die on the hill that it's a better looking game than the others.
When I first saw the direct I thought it was awesome. The voice chat thing was exactly what I wanted, the new mario kart, the new bond game announcement, gamecube nso, metroid 4k, zelda upgrade, etc. But then when I saw that the voice chat is friends only, plus the $450 price, plus $80 game, it kind of killed a lot of my joy. If you wanted mario kart with online functions you're paying $500 for the bundle plus $50 for nso, plus $50 for the camera.
Or I can do that all on my pc for much cheaper. Nintendo makes great games, they do weird quirky stuff, but they can also be really greedy. I don't think it's an accident that they left out the costs and friends only feature during their presentation. The fact that they are charging for a tech demo is pretty telling.
I know that the cost of the console is normal when taking in inflation, but people are struggling financially right now. Most people who play video games are either young, working class, or already have a pc/phone/ps5 that does what this offers for much less.
It's great if you guys are excited, and maybe I'm in the minority, but I think I'll wait and just stick to my current switch/pc.

Inflation means the value of money goes down. They're not going to sell it at a loss, they're going to sell it at a price which they can profit from. And because money is worth less now, because of inflation, the sticker price has to go up. They're not actually charging you more because they're not making more out of it. Because the money you're giving them is worth less than it used to be
Doesn't matter that people are doing it tough, this isn't the first or last time that's the case. And trust me, as someone with a mortgage I know I would rather it be cheaper especially given everything is getting expensive. But things are getting expensive BECAUSE of inflation. Because of inflation the money I have and the money I earn? It's worth less. That's what inflation is
So you adjust the price for inflation and...... outside of Nintendo's consoles it's the fourth cheapest home console ever at launch. The only home consoles cheaper than it at launch are the XBOne Series S, the Atari 7800 and the Dreamcast. And amongst Nintendo home consoles? It's middle of the pack. Cheaper than the NES, SNES and Wii U, more expensive than the Wii, Switch, N64 and GC
It really isn't that expensive relatively speaking. It just seems expensive because Nintendo has been selling the same hardware at the same nominal price for almost a decade. Which means, in real terms, they've been cutting the price of it every year. Effectively
So apparently there's a Japan only SKU locked to the Japanese eShop, Japanese accounts and with its language locked to Japanese. You can only order it directly from Nintendo of Japan if you have a Japanese address
It's the equivalent of $330US.....
I'm fairly confident now that the pricing being where it is in response to US tariffs. And it is set like this globally in order to avoid people from the US circumventing the tariffs by importing and therefore screwing up Nintendo's supply chains and logistics. With the exception of this one domestic SKU which is only viable given that Japan is, well, local for them but also their largest single language market that doesn't speak English
The Direct was cool. Wasn't expecting the 120fps rumor to be true, 1080p was the endgame for that handheld size, and 4k is a nice to have. 60 fps performance modes should be standard and I hope Elden Ring and Cyberpunk will have them.
Disappointed there wasn't any mention of even a straight up port of Prime 2 and 3, do they really expect a big chunk of the Prime 1 remastered players to jump straight from Prime 1 to 4? might wait a little bit longer to see if they announce it.
Seeing GTA 6 would've fully reassured me that the system is powerful enough for current gen. However I do think all those switch 1 'impossible ports' (a term i dislike) are just Expensive-ports-to-optimize and the success of the Switch made them worth making. Then why didn't Rockstar port GTA 5 ? maybe the money was better spent on GTA 6 or something else. My bet is GTA 6 will be on the Switch 2. If not at launch then I'll probably just get it for PS5.
There were a ton of games that will be available day 1. I feel like getting a Switch 2 day 1 but in terms of stuff not on the Switch 1, I'm not sure there's enough of a hook for me. Mario Kart would be cool to check out but I'm not expecting to really get into it.
The new DK game or Prime 4 would do it (if the DK game is basically like a Mario Odyssey with DK), but seems like they won't be there day 1. Even Prime 2 and 3 ports/emulated on NSO would be. Maybe I'll change my mind after the upcoming Treehouse streams. I got Echoes of Wisdom but never felt like starting it, but a Switch 2 upgrade with 60/120 fps and HDR would give me a reason to. All that said, I'll probably still get a Switch 2 day 1.
Well, we've got a Treehouse in a few hours. Let us enjoy more game coverage while the world is on fire around Nintendo. All kinds of animosity going their way over normalizing the $80 price point. GTA VI starting at $100 guaranteed now?
The direct was enough to convince me to Get rid of XSX as a second console. Switch 2 with hdr, 4K support and decent juice will be enough to enjoy certain 3rd party games. Two point museum and civ7 was awesome to Get confirmed 😊
I'm more leaning towards negative now at today...
Too expensive, too weak (!!!), too same like Gamereactor from my country said at today.
SW2 is more powerful than what I initially thought, but it's TOO expensive for being a Nintendo console. Everything past $399 is too steep for a Nintendo console, combined with those ridiculous prices for the games has already scared away so many now.
Nintendo had to bouncing off back very strongly with announcement of new Mario, Zelda, Monolith Soft, Splatoon, Animal Crossing & co games during SW2 first 12 months , otherwise Switch 2 and Nintendo gets problems with the sales then.
Nintendo console has always been about first-party games.
@Keman
Imagine developers charging money for their work rather than continuing this race to the bottom on deep discounts and rushed launches. Honestly the more I think about it the more I think this is maybe a good thing. Assuming they don't push for DLC, season passes, micro transactions and the like I can see a world where these prices make sense for substantial one of quality releases
These games actually look very good indeed. Certainly not the kind of releases that are kind of drive-by set and forget affairs. They're almost surely worth the prices being charged. And if this is the kick the industry needs to stop its rapid death spiral then so be it
The average price of a GameCube game in 2001 was £50. In the past 25 years the average salary in the UK has more than doubled (though as Skywake has explained inflation means we never actually feel it - and we can even effectively be worse paid with bigger numbers in our bank accounts). It's expensive but if it means we get quality and "complete" games built around a traditional model instead of FTP transaction ridden garbage then I think it's something I'm pretty neutral on.
Plus I think many of those physical games will hold their value well over time.
I'll finally be sending my Steamdeck, Switch 1 and PS5 into retirement.
Switch 2 is the console of my dreams. 1080p screen, LCD that's reportedly very good with inky blacks, HDR that's reportedly impressive, 120fps, VRR, integrated chat, smooth eShop, fast load times and utilizes microSD Express, runs AAA 3rd party games that are extremely comparable to current gen consoles thanks to the massive jump in power and graphics seeing diminishing returns (even Shawn Laden recently said this, and that PS6 won't sell on improved graphics because nobody will perceive it), Nintendo games running 4k 60fps and 1080p 120fps, mouse controls, backward compatibility, Gamecube games, rear buttons on pro controller AND even on joycon grip (GL and GR are rear buttons on the joycon grip), tons of amazing games and 3rd parties pouring in (most impressive launch lineup of all time? I think so)...
It's a true one stop shop. The biggest weakness of Switch was lack of power resulting in performance issues and lack of more current AAA. Switch 2 addresses this. Now we have a console that will offer everything. Nintendo 1st party? Check. Massive 3rd party? Check. Console play in 4k? Check. Handheld in 1080p? Check. Tabletop mode with detached controllers? Check. High framerates at 120fps? Check. VRR and HDR? Check. Voice chat without a phone? Check. Library of Nintendo exclusives? Check. Library of recent 3rd party AAA? Check. NES, SNES, N64, GC, GB, GBA, Genesis, Switch games also playable? Check. I can't think of a single thing more I could have wanted.
@JaxonH Don't forget that Switch 2 has 3D audio support! Oh and "HD Rumble 2", which suggests they've improved the HD Rumble but didn't highlight it in the Direct.
I'm excited for the system too. Only thing I'm not happy about is Mario Kart being $80, but I'll just get the bundle and not worry about that. I'd just have to choose between Yakuza or Cyberpunk as an extra game... probably going with Yakuza
OK, Drag x Drive actually looks hella fun. When I first saw it I wrote it off but after watching Treehouse footage I'm genuinely excited and going to pick it up day one (provided you can play offline against CPU players). I was watching a video from Kinda Funny Games who aren't strictly Nintendo fans and usually don't even focus on Nintendo and even they were impressed with how precise and authentic using the mouse feature was in that game. And they said HD Rumble 2 is pretty mind-blowing. A massive leap forward from original HD rumble.
This is a great video about the price BTW. He says with a dead serious face, "this is a topic for adults- if you find this video too boring I will link a video with a person feeding a banana to a bat" lol lol rofl 🤣

@IceClimbers
Right! My Ambeo soundbar had the RCA port to connect a subwoofer ruined (it does have built in sub with bass down to 30 hz but adding a massive sub was noticeably more impressive- guess I can buy the wireless sub made to connect to it still), and my 4k OLED TV got scratched (I was moving and things got damaged in the car), so I'm all handheld now. Still have my Hifiman Arya Stealth and Sennheiser 800S and Focal Clear headphones (all top rate but I prefer the Hifimans- the bass from planar magnetics is incredible, only downside was strap was uncomfortable without a cushion so I added adhesive taped cushion with a knitted sleeve buttoned around it, and they're the most comfy headphones ever now) so 3D audio in a handheld is actually going to be a gamechanger for me. Says even the built in speakers will offer 3D audio in a future update (how well that works is tbd but it's gotta be better than straight stereo).
And ya I hear HD Rumble 2 is at least as good if not better than the Dualsense. And the LCD screen is actually extremely high quality with an insanely good contrast ratio despite not being OLED, and even the HDR is surprisingly impressive, so much so it's said the screen may be mini-LED.
I'm not happy about $80 for certain games either. But the bundle does make it $50. And the others I can get upgrade packs. For future games that high I'll just wait for sales that effectively lower price to $70 or less.
I'm going with Cyberpunk 2077 myself. Cause Steamdeck can't run it well and it has gyro aiming, motion controls, touchscreen support and mouse aiming. Which btw, to use mouse mode you simply turn joycon sideways and as soon as the sensor detects a surface it activates mouse mode. Lift it up and you're back to controller mode. It's seamless. Imagine playing with dual joycon and gyro, then for a boss you just instantly start using right joycon as a mouse, then instantly go back to dual joycon controller mode. There are no words... it's so dang awesome!
My planned launch day pickups:
Mario Kart World
Zelda BotW NSW2 Ed.
Zelda TotK NSW2 Ed.
Fast Fusion
Cyberpunk 2077
Hogwarts Legacy
Street Fighter 6
Having a SF game around launch is tradition for me (USFIV 3D on 3DS, USFII on Switch, now SF6 on Switch 2). Hogwarts Legacy is a super fun game, and adding mouse functionality sounds slick. Fast Fusion? Shinen F-Zero clone for new hardware is also tradition now. Cyberpunk is the crown jewel though. Gotta have that gyro/mouse aiming goodness. Mario Kart and next generation versions of the two Zeldas will suffice for 1st party at launch. Not to mention Gamecube with Zelda Windwaker HD, F-Zero GX HD and Soul Caliber 2 HD.
Planned pickups if/when on sale half price:
Bravely Default Remastered
Yakuza 0
Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma
Civilization VII (imagine with mouse controls!)
Split Fiction (perfect for Switch 2)
Hitman
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
