It's worth remembering that the game released back in 1998, when the commercial internet was still in its infancy, game guides were something that you had to go out and buy or at least pick up with a magazine, and it'd still be a good few years before you could just look up a solution on YouTube. So, lots of players went in blind, got stuck in a complex spatiotemporal puzzle, and a legend was born.
Now that you can consult detailed online guides and video walkthroughs, there's nothing to be too scared about. Unless you're absolutely determined to get through the game without external help, you've got little to worry about these days. Even there, the 3DS version added a lot of extra hints.
Just wrapped up with the Yoshi and the Mysterious Book demo.
My worries were put to rest - I had a great time with it. This game seems to have more in common with the Yoshi "platformers" than people online are expressing - I think Yoshi has always had some element of exploration and light puzzle solving in its gameplay. Now that it's the focus, I'm interested to see where this one goes.
