64 would have been my "Mario" as a kid, but to be honest 3 and World were still very popular at the same time.

Edit: I don't think we ever got Mario 64 now that I think about it. But Super Mario Bros 3? My older brother played it a lot (and I still have the same cartridge)

So I guess what I’m trying to say is… I wouldn’t say I missed out on Mario as a young kid, because even older Mario games have really strong staying power.

@Buizel i would focus less on the years for now and more on the generation - after all, it's moreso important there's one big 3d mario per generation rather than how long it takes between each one, i feel

All this talk about Mario "missing a generation of kids" is also weird since we got Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023, and AFAIK it was quite popular and a lot of kids played it. Maybe it's because I'm old and grew up on the NES Super Mario games, but I find the idea that only the 3D Marios are the real deal and the 2D ones don't matter that much odd.

And this.

We HAVE gotten new Mario games aside from Odyssey all throughout the Switch generation. And really, we literally got another Mario game yesterday - some people are just too high on their horses to acknowledge anything that isn't the next "big" 3D game.

So many people miss the forest for the trees.

There have been at least 2 mario games every year since 2017.

Even if you are only talking about Mario platformers and don't count the spinoffs like the rpgs/paper, Toad, Peach, etc which involve platforming, we still had the following 'tradional' mario platformers:

  • 2017 - Odyssey
  • 2018 - None
  • 2019 - both NSMBU and super mario maker 2
  • 2020 - 3D all-stars
  • 2021 - 3D World
  • 2022 - none
  • 2023 - Wonder
  • 2024 - none
  • 2025 - Galaxy
  • 2026 - Wonder DLC

Removing the DLC and second copy of Galaxy 1, that is 9 unique mario platformers in 10 years and missing no more than 1 year at a time. Some of those games are old, but they are new to kids of that generation.

Basically, kids who grew up with Switch have absolutely been drowning in Mario platformers. And that's not even counting the many Mario games available on NSO.

And the interesting thing to watch will be the total sales of Wonder after this S2 Edition is out for a bit. I wouldn't be shocked if, after some time of course, the two versions amount to total sales creeping close to Odyssey's.

Odyssey sold around 30 million and S1 Wonder sold around 17 million. (Odyssey has been out for 6 years longer, as well.)

The 3D World +Bowser's Fury pack sold around 14 million.

3D All Stars sold over 9 million.

Odyssey is fantastic and sold insanely well and the next one is going to be amazing, yes, but all of these "other" Mario games have sales numbers that equal or exceed flagship titles in other massive franchises like God of War and Horizon.

Don't be so quick to just jump on the "3D Mario or bust" wagon - its wheels aren't too sturdy.

At minimum I think Wonder will finally pass new super mario bros U and take its rightful place in the top 10 selling Switch games.

Speaking of new Mario games….I haven’t seen much chatter here about what people are thinking about the wonder dlc? Has anyone checked it out? I love the koopalings, but not sure if I’ll really touch the multiplayer.

@Lazz
I'm getting it today or tomorrow. The overall vibe seems to be that it's actually very good, even the single-player additions.

@FishyS
I think it will, definitely, and I agree that it deserves it. It could always be the timing or whatever, but Wonder was one of those games that reminded me why I enjoy games.

@Lazz my physical copy should be arriving tomorrow. I will probably end up replaying the entire game because it's been awhile.
