@JaxonH It remains to be seen. It's worth considering that much of Nintendo's year one support was cross-gen, and they really haven't had anything aside from Mario Kart to push sales hard on their new console. If we get Pokemon/Zelda/Mario/etc. this year, I think you'll probably see legacy sales die off pretty hard.
But I wouldn't mind if you were right. It'd be the funniest thing in the world for Switch to topple the console record AGAIN, this time overcoming that extra five million units Sony manifested out of thin air.
Also, I'll say this: Switch OLED benefitted harder from word of mouth promotion than anything else I've ever seen. Everyone was initially mocking the thing for being a minor revision when people wanted a Pro, but the image quality and battery life gains were so significant that public opinion totally flipped on its head with the system. For the moment, outside of games specifically patched to run better on Switch 2, it's inarguably the best way to experience the majority of the gigantic Switch 1 library if you play undocked.
Currently Playing: Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition
@JaxonH Switch 1 prices haven't risen in all of the world, and it's a lot easier to get them discounted too. For instance, the price difference between an OLED and a Switch 2 in Australia is more like $200 (AU). You, of all people, will know that there are few things that you can do with a Switch 1 that you can't yet with a Switch 2, as well, and that's surely a factor.
Also, if you want a pure handheld, the Lite still isn't a bad option. All but two of the Switch 2 games that I've got still run on it in some fashion, and the likes of Hades 2 and Metroid Prime 4 run very well, even.
I think there will eventually be a cost-reduced model of the Switch 2 that finishes it off, assuming component scarcity doesn't get there first, but I definitely can see it having a decent tail over the next year or so.
Also, the software sales are incredibly strong for a nearly nine year-old platform, even accounting for many of them being bought for play on a Switch 2. It doesn't look like a console that people are ready to cast aside, just yet.
If you're going by sell through, you were basically on the dot. I realize you probably weren't since Nintendo doesn't usually tell us that info, but it's kinda neat.
@Ralizah
Thing is, I believe Switch is beyond the point of new software driving its hardware sales. Like, think about it this way: someone waits 9 full years to buy, skips 5 Zelda games, 4 2D/3D Marios, 2 Splatoons, 5 huge Pokemon releases, 4 Xenoblades, 2 Fire Emblems, 3 Bayonettas, 3 Mario Party games, Switch Sports and Ring Fit, Mario Kart and Smash Bros, 2 Luigi's Mansions, all the Mario sports titles, 4 RPG Mario titles, Tomogachi Life and Animal Crossing...
Then finally, a decade later, picks one up because a new [insert game here] releases?
I think at this point, Switch is selling on its back catalog. No doubt new games will also sell, but I didn't see any holiday bump for NS1 due to Pokemon Legends Z-A. I think the people who are buying Switch now, arent doing so because exclusive #123 finally persuaded them. I think it's the weight of the library in totality.
And with that many systems out there, sometimes people lose them or they break and want to replace it, irrespective of whether they own a NS2. And, now that modchips can be easily soldered in by numerous professionals offering their services on Etsy and online mod/repair centers, and OLED being the model to chip due to battery life efficiency needed for overclocking, that's probably helping to boost some late game sales as well. Probably not that much, when Nintendo's pushing at the tape every little extra bit matters.
This is all assuming we never see a price cut. If they decide to start slapping that orange clearance sticker on Switch like they did with 3DS, at least dropping down to original MSRP but possibly even further (think Lites for $150, v2 for $275, OLEDs for $325, and then whenever demand finally starts drying up hit em with that $100 Lite, $200 v2 and $250 OLED), there's no way Switch can't squeeze that last 4m needed.
I bet Switch continues to sell in 2026, does 3m, then in 2027 it finally starts grinding to a halt with some Holiday fire sales to clear stock, and when Nintendo has their annual FY meeting in March 2028, they announce Switch has surpassed 160m and that production will officially be ending. But, there's a chance Switch sells a few mil in 2026, then does the same in 2027, and they decide screw it, let it ride as long as it keeps pulling in 2+ million each year. In which case it could do 162-165 before it finally runs out of gas.
I so want to see it pass 160m, too. I think it will. It sold 4m this year with virtually no new games (Pokemon was end of year and it didn't even see a spike from it). All it needs is 2.5m in 2026 and 1.5m in 2027. I think that's doable!

I can't claim credit for that cause I wasn't- I was calculating shipped, but giving a bare minimum, absolute worst-case scenario baseline to show that even then, they'd still be on track to hit their 19m target.
I think they provided that info cause grifters were saying they only "shipped" a bunch of units but none of them were actually selling, and they were piled up at retailers and the "real number" would be like 11 million actually sold. That infographic completely shut that argument down.
It's so silly anyways cause we've always gone by shipped. It's is the pound for pound consensus metric everyone uses and has always used.
@IceClimbers
I played and beat the Pragmata Sketchbook demo twice on Steamdeck. Not only is it a great game, engaging you in a multi-tasking sort of way few other games attempt (think Astral Chain or The World Ends With You), but it looked great even on Steamdeck in 720p on the Ultra Lowest settings at 30fps.
So anything above and beyond will just make it even better. And it will have gyro aiming, which will really help when going back and forth between hacking.
You hold ZL to Lock-On and bring up hacking panel, but all shots are then aimed at center of enemy where you're locked on. But by letting go of ZL to stop hacking and free aim, you won't need to move thumb to right analog as you can instead just make a quick, instant, subtle movement of the wrist to aim exactly where you want while keeping thumb on face buttons to instantly begin navigating the hacking puzzle once holding ZL again.
It's such a small, nuanced thing but it's stuff like that I really appreciate about gyro. I hope the game does well on Switch 2. We're gonna be inundated with so many games, Idk if most will be able to afford them all.
In about a 4 month timespan, consider all the NS2 software releasing competing for our time and money...
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
Dynasty Warriors Origins
GRID Legends
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined
Mario Tennis Fever
PGA 2K25
Yakuza Kiwami 3
Ys X Proud Nordics
Reanimal
Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Requiem
Disney Afternoon Collection
Pokopia
Fatal Frame 2 Remake
WWE 2K26
Monster Hunter Stories 3
Virtua Fighter 5
Super Mario Bros Wonder NS2 Ed
Pragmata
007 First Light
Borderlands 4 [TBD]
Elden Ring [TBD]
And let's not forget there's also a few NS1 titles releasing as well...
Tales of Berseria
The Show 26
Mega Man StarForce Collection
Tomodachi Life
And that's not even mentioning games like Gear Club 3 Unlimited, Chromagun, Carmageddon, etc.
Personally, I'm grabbing over half of those, but I'd prioritize
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined
Mario Tennis Fever
Ys X Proud Nordics
Resident Evil Requiem
Monster Hunter Stories 3
Pragmata
And since Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest already released, that really just leaves 5 main games to focus on over the coming months. But some may not be into Mario Tennis (I am, but I get its not for everyone) and not everyone will be into Falcom JRPGs (if you are you are, but if not I think Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is the one to dive into for Trails, and Ys X Proud Nordics is the one to dive into for Ys).
It's really the Capcom Three that deserve the most attention. Resident Evil Requiem looks peak, and it sounds like they developed it ground up with NS2 in mind. Monster Hunter Stories 3 looks insanely good, so if you're into either Monster Hunter or Pokemon, or just great JRPGs in general, that's a must. And Pragmata is a new IP that's unlike anything I've played before.
Whenever the Pragmata demo drops, I recommend people play through it twice. Only takes about 15-20 minutes to beat. But it combat didn't really "click" for me until the 2nd playthrough. It's just so different it takes a bit to acclimate. But once it clicks, it clicks.

Yoooo Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition coming up!
@JaxonH People buy new game consoles many, many years after launch. Anyway, anyone who never invested in Switch 1 will be investing in that back catalog either way, but if there's not really anything on the new console worth getting, then it makes more sense to invest in the cheaper console, right? I think this will change as Switch 2 actually gets games that move consoles. Because, outside of Mario Kart World, Switch 2 doesn't really have one of those yet.
Currently Playing: Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition
@Ralizah It's encouraging news but I wouldn't necessarily take it as a given that the game would come out this year. After all, Jenna Coleman effectively leaked that Xenoblade 3 was in development back in 2021, but we still had to wait nearly a year for it to come out afterwards.
Also, while a XC2 Definitive Edition is a possibility, it could still be a new game featuring KOS-MOS.
@Ralizah
People also buy new consoles as an investment knowing new games will be releasing for many years in the future. I think when you're talking about 150+ million people many of whom are normies, there's always gonna be some who just go for the cheaper option and full library. That'll naturally slow to a stop as Switch 2 library builds, but I think Switch has enough juice in the tank to get from the 5 yard line to the end zone.
As for XC2, Idk if they'd add new content when it already got a huge expansion. Not that you said that would happen, but I saw others speculating about it. I think all 4 Xenoblade games are content complete. Only changes I see are resolution, framerate, and perhaps some tweaks to progression blocks like those Environmental Levels in XC2, or changes to the gacha system.
But that's all the games need, tbh. 1440p 60fps. Call it a day.

Footage of Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem on Switch 2.
Apparently people are coming away very impressed with the Switch 2 versions of these games.
Though I disagree with their assessment RE Requiem doesn't impress visually on Switch 2. Looks phenomenal to me. As soon as they said it was 540p in docked mode I immediately knew they had no clue what they were talking about lol. But still, it's good footage.
Exciting times, for sure... especially for later today! Edit: announcement came pretty early lol
Randomly, I went back and gave Kirby Air Riders a second try, and I've REALLY been enjoying it. It's super twitchy and the boosting feels so tactile and awesome - just my kind of game at the end of the day.
Pretty sure Nioh 3 is coming to Switch 2 later this year. It's not published by Sony and there's a disclaimer that it's "timed console exclusive for 6 months".
Given where Xbox brand is, I doubt KT is itching to port to that platform. Though it may also come to Xbox, my guess is if they have intentions of releasing on other consoles then Switch 2 is going to be the target in their sights.
Idk why Sony is even bothering money hatting 3rd party anymore. It may have worked against Xbox but with games coming day and date on PC, all they're really doing is delaying a Switch 2 release by 6 months. And Nintendo fans are used to waiting years after the fact. A little 6 month delay isn't gonna convince all that many people to buy on PS instead, especially knowing a Switch 2 release is coming.
Anyone who wants to play on Switch 2, will simply wait for the Switch 2 release. Unless they're a diehard fan chomping at the bit for that specific game, but those people were gonna buy on PS anyways since that's where they cultivated the fanbase.
Idk. I think PS is gonna learn the hard way that moneyhatting 3rd party timed console exclusivity deals for games here and there isn't gonna work as well against Switch 2 as it did against Xbox.

Pragmata demo and Monster Hunter Stories 3 demo available right now!
I was pretty happy with a couple of those announcements we just got. Not the Partner Direct I was expecting, but still had some exciting surprises in there.
Kyoto Xanadu
Seems to be the sequel to Tokyo Xanadu (same devs as Trails and Ys series). That's a W. I didn't even know they were making a sequel.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok
Been waiting on this for a long time. Guess it just needed a more powerful Switch before coming over. Seems to have some new expansion too? Run that.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Comes out in June?!! And it's only $50 (but they're killing me with that $70 Deluxe Edition that only adds 3 items).
Also great news as Indiana Jones eShop page confirms gyro aiming! That's an automatic buy. Will be holding off on Oblivion and Fallout until I know whether they also include gyro.
Tales of Arise is finally coming, which I'm happy to see, and that Digimon game everyone seemed to want on Switch 2 got announced. Probably not for me but, glad it's coming. And thank God we got that NS2 Edition of Disney Dreamlight Valley so I don't have to hear about it anymore 😀
Gotta be honest. Turok Origins kinda looks good. If it has gyro I think I'd be down. Like the return of the N64 era.
And speaking of eras, what's the deal with that Tokyo Scramble game? Like, that feels like a concept straight out of the GameCube. No idea if it'll be good or not. It's just interesting... different, let's say.
Oh, almost forgot. We're getting a new Culdcept game. That's really rad, actually.
Well, off to play the Pragmata demo for the 3rd time (1st time on Switch 2 though) and check out Monster Hunter Stories 3.
@JaxonH I'm impressed, the game is around 128GB on PC, so twice the size of what you could fit on a game card, as well as being bigger than the kinds of Blu-Rays that Microsoft uses for physical copies. Someone's been putting in some hard work with the digital shoehorn there.
Hopefully it's done by trimming out unnecessary data - I'd imagine that the Switch 2 probably won't have the performance to need some of the highest-resolution versions of assets, for instance - rather than compressing everything heavily or cutting actual content.
@Matt_Barber It's not impossible to reduce the size of a game that much on the Switch 2 while still doing a quality port: the S2 version of Star Wars Outlaws is only 20 GB, less than one third of the PC version (which is 65 GB), and it looks great.
@Polvasti Yeah, Ubisoft certainly raised a few eyebrows with what they managed to achieve with that port. It does appear that the texture quality took quite a big hit though, and that's where these size reductions are usually achieved. You can contrast that to something like Split Fiction, which seems to have the same textures on Switch 2 as PC.
Still Indiana Jones is potentially huge; it's widely regarded as one of the most demanding PC games of the last couple of years and if the Switch 2 can do an acceptable job with it - and let's not expect miracles here - it should stand as a benchmark to what is possible.
Microsoft seem confident enough in giving it a full game card release, so fingers are crossed.
India was the best game of 2024, so I might actually grab this to own it. Such a gem. Also, troy baker did a fantastic job as Harrison ford in this . You can’t even tell the difference.
