Nah, you don't need a full system transfer. Just sign into your Nintendo Account, and redownload whatever you want. Be sure to disable your Switch as the primary console in eShop profile settings, then launch eShop on Switch 2 to make it your new primary (1st console that launches eShop after de-registering your primary becomes your new primary).
As long as you have cloud saves, just redownload your saves. Remember to toggle auto upload/download, but the first download for each game must be initiated manually before it becomes automatic.
Idk about the AC transfer, but since it doesnt have cloud saves, starting it will absolutely let you start a new game.

@gcunit I've done the system transfer when I got my Switch 2, and after that, it did let me use my Switch OLED as an alternate system. I would just need to bring over the virtual game card(s) if necessary. Don't pick "I don't have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet," because that would format your Switch after uploading the transfer data to the cloud.
Yeah, I didn't do the system transfer right when I got the OLED, and my play times got messed up as well. It would think I played a game for the first time, even though it wasn't my first time playing it. I ended up formatting my Switch OLED, then I did the system transfer from my V1 Switch. If the messed up play times would bother you, then I'd say the transfer is worth doing.
As for New Horizons, I would think it would let you start a new island. I've not tried it though, so it's an educated guess. If you want to play on your current island on your Switch 2, you will need to do the system transfer to Switch 2. I hope this helps and congrats on securing a Switch 2... hope it arrives soon!

@gcunit System transfer has zero negative side effects as far as I can tell. All it does is copy your settings, transfer your save files, and redownload the games. The Switch 1 still has all the games and settings, although you need to choose which console gets the virtual game card (or else change the setting which allows you to play any game as long as one device is internet connected).
@gcunit If you do the system transfer option during the initial set up sequence on your Switch 2 it lets you transfer from your Switch 1 without wiping the Switch 1. Do note that it will automatically start downloading any games you had installed on the Switch 1, so you may have to cancel downloads if you don't want all that space taken up.

They actually fixed that in the latest Switch OS update:
'Added the ability to disable the following options when performing a system transfer from a Nintendo Switch system to a Nintendo Switch 2 system using System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 in System Settings.
Redownload Software on Nintendo Switch 2
Transfer Album Data'
That was fast, the Switch 2 version of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition has already shot up to #1 in the UK eshop Switch 2 charts and when considering both eshop charts combined the Switch 2 version of TRDE is only behind the Switch 1 version of Legends Z-A.
I also don't have a Switch 2 yet. Can I just sign in when I do get it with my main account and download the saved games? I really don't want to ditch my Switch 1 completely. I really don't want to lose my Island in ACNH, and I also don't want to redownload all the indie games that I have on it.
I'm also not completely mentally awake at the moment, so I might be completely misreading things.

Well, I officially fell for it. Had a long car trip planned in a few days, and I purchased the Octopath 1 and 2 sale on the eshop. I’m not a graphics guy in any respect, and I honestly only noticed the poor resolution in handheld mode on Smash of all games so far, but both games genuinely look so bad as to be unplayable on a Switch 2. Enjoyed the first bit I ended up playing on my TV, but the horrid bluriness looks especially poor with the pixel graphics in handheld mode. I really think Nintendo should release some sort of warning for games that are as unoptimized for Switch 2 as this one.

I think I finally understand those lol it took me many months.
Basically, the virtual card doesn’t necessarily mean you have the game downloaded to the console or not. It’s just if the console you’re on currently has permission (or has “loaded” the game card) to play the game.
Virtual game cards are in case you want to share the game to another system where it doesn't need to check internet to play. But I just activate "Online License" from top left user profile icon menu and any game on my NSW1 OLED or NSW Lite OLED can be played without transferring DGC first. It does a quick online check and boots the game up. Basically same as how it's always worked before VGC. The VGC are just an additional optional freedom to play on other non-primary systems without the online check.
Btw, here we have Tomb Raider Definitive Edition on Switch Lite OLED and on Switch 2. I gotta admit, whenever I leave the house I tend to just grab the Lite OLED in the magnetic case because it fits in my inner jacket pocket. Tomb Raider is only 30fps on NSW1 but overclocking a bit ensures framerate stays locked 100% of the time and dynamic resolution doesn't drop.
And by undervolting, I get 4.5 hrs battery life in Tomb Raider on Switch Lite OLED. Pretty impressive. And 6 hrs on the undervolted Switch OLED! Not sure how long I get on NSW2 because I don't have a status overlay estimating time left, but I imagine it's 3-4 hrs. But it is running 1080p with better textures and double framerate.
Tomb Raider (2013) is big. With the Batman Arkham trilogy, Yakuza, Persona, Beyond Good and Evil and the Tales remasters...we're pretty much closing in all I could ever ask for in terms of 3rd party ports.
I also don't have a Switch 2 yet. Can I just sign in when I do get it with my main account and download the saved games? I really don't want to ditch my Switch 1 completely. I really don't want to lose my Island in ACNH, and I also don't want to redownload all the indie games that I have on it.

The automatic transfer process with auto-redownload set to off is probably the easiest way to do this assuming you want your animal crossing island to move to a Switch 2. Your Animal Crossing island and your acount settings will transfer over but your original Switch will still have everything except your animal crossing and pokemon save files.
Tomb Raider coming now is amusing given I remember back in the day asking why it skipped the Wii U. It was a 2013 game so it was a bit before it was clear the Wii U was a dead end. And then when the Switch launched and did well thought "surely it comes to Switch now". Nope. Crazy for it to come now at a point where it almost feels like a retro game
I played through it on PC back in the day. On a machine that I would say the Switch 2 probably outclasses on pretty much every spec
In terms of my recent gets, picked up The Plucky Squire on sale. Was hesitant when it launched because there were performance issues but supposedly those are brute forced away on Switch 2. I must say, it runs perfectly fine on Switch 2, the frame pacing is great. I'm only playing it docked so I can't speak for the resolution mismatch in handheld but it is fine docked, I believe it's 1080p docked? Certainly no AA though
I complained about Tomb Raider not being on Switch all generation. It seems like NSW1 is seeing a resurgence in 3rd party support in it's 9th year. Just saw Tales of Berseria announced too- another PS4 game I got early on (in fact, got the collector edition).
Switch 2 is benefitting because the games run on it via BC, but in the case of Tomb Raider, it got 60fps with higher res and textures. The PS4 version looks a bit better BUT, even on PS5 Pro it can't hold a locked 60fps. So I'm perfectly happy with what we got (plus, like Batman Arkham a lot of ppl preferred the 360 version- I didn't personally care much but it is worth noting the version ported was preferred by a notable portion of fans).
It's such a great game. I havent really put it down since I started. Actually have 3 separate save files going- one for NSW2, one for NSW1 OLED and one for NSW1 Lite OLED. Having it pocketable was handy at the dermatologist today sitting in the waiting room.
14 days to Metroid Prime 4! Next week is the last full week on planet Earth without Metroid Prime 4. The last one...

@JaxonH Third party support for Switch 2 so far has been lots of things I didn't expect, and a lack of the obvious. No Minecraft, no CoD despite a legal agreement, no follow ups to Switch 1 games as such.
But then stuff like Cyberpunk, Street Fighter, PGA, WWE, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, day and date releases at that. Wild.
14 days to Prime 4, and I work in retail so I look forward to playing it....in February!

@rallydefault On the SwitchUp Youtube channel they have a series about how Switch 1 games run on Switch 2 and they also did a video on The Witcher 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3MjQezHPck&list=PLty7kx5...
It runs locked at a stable 30fps und due to dynamic resolution it also looks much sharper.
