There is no upgrade pack for Sonic x Shadow Generations. They expect people to repurchase the entire game. Hence why I didn't buy the NSW2 version, and likely never will unless it's on sale for $20 or less.

Most games have an upgrade option but this is one of the rare exceptions that doesn't. Even Hogwarts Legacy, which was developed ground up, did a 180 and offered a $10 upgrade.

Sorry.

Thank you, guys. It honestly is really weird that they would not give me the option to give them money so I can upgrade my game. At least I know I'm not blind.

It's certainly dumb but at least it's the exception rather than the rule. With that said it is going to be kinda absurd when the Switch 2 Edition eventually goes on sale at a price similar to the Switch version. Because at that point there'd be literally no reason to pick up the Switch version given the Switch 2 edition also runs on Switch

As it stands though it's still kinda stupid to buy the Switch version. Even if you don't have a Switch 2 yet, if you expect you'll eventually get one just buy the Switch 2 edition. It's a bit dumb

I don't think it's a "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition". I think its just a port that's on Switch 2. The Switch 2 version will not play on Switch 1- neither the physical nor the digital.

But ya, I'm glad it's the exception rather than the rule. When the system launched I didn't expect many games to offer upgrade paths, but it seems all but a couple do. Sonic Generations, No Sleep For Kaname Date, Radou, Suikoden I+II, Tony Hawk PS 3/4 and... Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Worst offender being Sega/Atlus games barring Yakuza and Sonic Racing Crossworlds (Yakuza Kiwami NSW2 edition is discounted if you own the NSW1 version, but I don't think it's an "upgrade", but Sonic Racing will have an upgrade and a fully on-cart NSW2 physical release). Everyone else is offering upgrades- Square Enix games (Romancing SaGa 2 Remake, FF Tactics), Warner Bros games (Hogwarts Legacy), Nintendo games (Zelda BotW/TotK, Kirby Forgotten Land, Mario Party Jamboree, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Metroid Prime 4, Super Mario Wonder), Falcom games (Trails In The Sky 1st, possibly Ys X Proud Nordics), Hades II, Hollow Knight Silksong, etc.

I love digital versions of NSW2 Editions though. Cause I can eject them, download on my NSW1 OLED, dump the games, eject and archive them and reinsert them on NSW2, then install the games on emuNAND of my chipped OLED (walled garden partition that blocks all online connections to Nintendo servers so as to overclock games without fear of detection and ban, even though I've never heard of anyone getting banned for overclocking- only cheating in online games... still, better safe than sorry). Then I can play on Switch OLED with the docked image output in handheld mode while overclocked to ensure stable framerate, and also still have the game on Switch 2 separately.

For some games they're actually superior on NSW1 OLED that way. Example would be Trails In The Sky 1st. The NSW2 Edition cant hold 60fps. The NSW1 Edition running on NSW2 is 30fps but runs stable. But, in handheld mode resolution is capped at 540p. Whereas on NSW1 OLED, I can output the 900p docked image in handheld mode, supersampled down to 720p, while overclocking to ensure a stable 30fps.

Admittedly, most games are flat out superior on NSW2. Like Hades II. It runs 1080p 60fps handheld and 120fps docked. On NSW1 OLED it's 720p 60fps. Still a respectable version though. Same for Hollow Knight Silksong, Final Fantasy Tactics, Sonic Racing Crossworld, etc. Provided you can overclock to prevent frame drops and output the docked image in handheld to ensure 720p. Too often Switch 1 games in handheld mode on a stock NSW1 suffer with regard to resolution and performance.

I meant to respond to this.

I agree. For any Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, there's no reason to buy a Switch 1 version when you can buy a combo version that contains both Switch 1 and 2 releases. Even if it's $10 more, that $10 ensures you get the next-gen version included.

Speaking of which, a slick trick to get Metroid Prime 4 NSW2 Edition (MSRP $70) and Pokémon Legends Z-A NSW2 Edition (MSRP $70) for $120 ($108 actually if you buy $120 eShop credit from gcx.raise website which permanently offers eShop credit with 10% back), is to load up $120 eShop credit (again, buy from gcx.raise website for 10% discount), then buy 2 vouchers for $100, and use on the NSW1 versions of Metroid and Pokémon, then buy the $10 upgrades separately for a total of $20. Grand total for both $70 games (normally $140) is just $108 (even without gcx.raise you'll get them for $120, or $59.99 each, effectively rendering the NSW2 upgrades free).

Gotta be smart in this day and age, and leverage every advantage you can get. If you do that- grab Mario Kart World for $50 with the bundle, grab Pokémon Legends Z-A for $54 with gcx.raise and voucher, grab Metroid Prime 4 for $54 with gcx.raise and voucher, grab all $70 NSW2 exclusives like Kirby Air Riders and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment for $63/ea by utilizing gcx.raise for eShop credit, grab all $10 upgrades for games like Zelda Breath of the Wild, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Hogwarts Legacy and Super Mario Bros Wonder for $9 by utilizing gcx.raise for eShop credit...

It may not always sound like a lot, but it adds up. 5 upgrades no longer costs $50, but $45... 3 games no longer cost $210, but $189... 2 NSW2 Edition releases no longer cost $140, but $108... 1 $80 game is no longer $80, but $50...

Play the game smart.

The cherry on top is NSO+. At $50/yr I can't deny its value at this point. With online access, cloud saves, DLC expansions for several notable titles like Splatoon, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing, and access to NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, GameCube, Virtual Boy, Gameboy/Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance, especially when compared to other systems and their $120-$360 annual services, it's worth it.

BUT...

If you play smart, you can have all of that for $10/year. That's right. TEN DOLLARS PER YEAR.

The family plan option is $80/yr and allows up to 8 people to join together as members. Don't have to be related. Don't even have to live in the same country. I joined Eel's family plan along with my brother, and 5 others he brought into the fold, some friends/family of his and others members of this site like me, and we all PayPal him $10 every September to cover another year of NSO+. I just paid him $30 to cover me for 3 more additional years (and paid $10 to cover my brother for another year). I get all the same benefits as if I had purchased the solo NSO+ for $50. And I've been doing this for years now.

Every single person here could band together with other members (be sure the admin of the group is a long time, trusted member of NintendoLife, and if that's you, then you should start a new group with you as admin), and start paying just $10/yr for NSO+. Set a reminder in your phone calendar 11 months out to remind you to PayPal your portion (or collect payments from members, giving them a 1 month notice ahead of time to send you the money).

When you're playing the game like I am, when you're playing every card to it's fullest potential, it's amazing how far you can make a dollar stretch.

Goddamn, Switch 2 already sold 2.4 million units in US

@skywake While there's exceptions like Deltarune, it seems the general pattern of whether there's a discount depends on whether the Switch 2 version is DLC for the Switch 1 version or not. Take Square Enix for example:

  • Switch 2 version of FF Tactics is DLC for the Switch 1 version and is a free upgrade
  • Switch 2 versions of DQ1+2 remake, DQ7 remake and Octopath 0 are separate downloads but there's no upgrade option available

The nature of the situation makes me wonder if the way the eshop works would result in physical providing an eshop exploit if upgrade was available for separate download Switch 2 versions. Like you could buy a Switch 1 version of a game physically, use it to upgrade to the Switch 2 version, sell the Switch 1 physical version but still play the Switch 2 version you downloaded.

It's a huge success but the Playstation 4 did launch with a state of the art spec for the time and there was significant stock shortages. However the Switch 2 is based on a chip design from 2020/2021 and is using a very dated mainly 10Nm fabrication process which is a very cheap process today. It feels like its much easier for Nintendo to replenish stock as the Switch 2 doesn't have anything about its spec that is particularly high performance. Actually thinking about it I guess the flash storage is actually high performance so there is 256GB of that but no idea how easy that is to obtain as many devices include similar flash memory. I also wonder if Nintendo actually had a a large amount of T239 chipsets from the aborted Switch Pro launch of about 3 years ago. It feels like normally the main chipset is manufactured before anything else and wonder if there was an initial batch unused. Also Nintendo never updated the fabrication process between the Switch Pro and the Switch 2 so maybe one reason was a large amount of inventory of the older mainly 10Nm chipsets. I think its one advantage of Nintendo using older less advanced technology that it is easier and cheaper to produce hardware quickly. Even in 2020/2021 the T239 chipset was not high performance but would of course been more impressive back then. No question though the Switch Pro would have had less memory and a smaller amount of storage which would have been slower. Perhaps 8GB of memory and 128GB of slower storage.

My point is though that Nintendo had a higher level of stock availability to enable a higher percentage of customers who wanted the Switch 2 to get one. These are the early adopters though and we have yet to see the long term sales for more casual gamers of the Switch 2. These figures may be super impressive or they may slow down sales significantly. I was an early adopter of the wii u but there was a severe slowdown of buyers for the wii u after early adopters like me. It launched very well but didn't maintain sales. I'm sort of feeling the Switch 2 is not going to sell like the original Switch but neither is it going to struggle like the wii u. I feel like sales (worldwide) will be a bit below expectations.

This debate won't go away until the system is discontinued in 15 years will it?

The goalposts will keep moving, there will always be another "But...".

Just enjoy some damn games and stop worrying about moving those goalposts until the thing dies.

I don't think anyone is worrying about what is happening. It's a forum which is all about debating different points of view. I'm not emotionally invested in Nintendo but interested in playing games and sometimes discussing them. At the end of the day I bought a wii u and it failed but there were loads of games I loved and because of its commercial failure there were a huge amount of software bargains. I don't think I actually suffered because of its failure because I was really only interested in Nintendo's own games mainly and they did some amazing titles for the console. A console can succeed or fail commercially and you can still have a great experience with it either way.

Looking at VGChartz their estimates show in Europe in August the PS5 returned to being the best selling console just 2 months after Switch 2 launch and that is where I am based. Europe definitely feels like the Switch 2 has had a slower start and there has been a lot of returned stock available. The cheapest I've seen was £299 at Clearance Bargains. I guess this is why I'm feeling Switch 2 is not doing as well in Europe and the UK. However we all know Christmas is the most important time for Nintendo consoles sales as it tends to have younger owners than other consoles but still it definitely feels like a slower start here than Japan or the US. However its not as successful a market for Nintendo anyway historically. I think the pricing was too high for Europe and should have been more in line with Japanese market pricing to shift a higher number of units. Nintendo may be forced into a price cut earlier in Europe or maybe they will just accept a lower level of sales in Europe.

Also I see in the US there has been some serious discounting of Xbox consoles as many retailers clear out stock and no longer take those consoles because of slow sales of xbox consoles and software. I'm guessing this is likely to happen in Europe too at some point and maybe big reductions on Xbox consoles in the build up to Christmas will effect general console pricing. I personally wouldn't mind a cheap Xbox Series X console. These cheap consoles could damage sales of PS5 and Switch 2.

So difficult for people to just say wow, that's impressive. It's always, "But Sony this, but Sony that". But Sony nothing.

@BonzoBanana Both consoles are naturally going to do very well. Switch 2 is a new console with a solid lineup of exclusives meanwhile PS5 has GTA6 arriving next year which'll give last gen players a reason to upgrade to current gen.

I'm not a PS5 owner myself. It doesn't look worth a purchase to me as has no exclusives of any merit nowadays. I'm primarily a PC gamer as well as Switch but I thought it was interesting how quickly the PS5 returned to the top sales position in Europe. Just to show a significant Switch 2 slowdown in sales in Europe even if Japan and the US are performing much better in Switch 2 sales.

@BonzoBanana
Europe has always been Nintendo's weakest region and Sony dominant. But it doesnt matter. Because even despite this Switch 2 is still outpacing them. And launch aligned 77% ahead of the original Switch, which is currently at 154 million units sold.

So it's kind of irrelevant.

edit
Should also add, this focus on who's outselling who in what region is so pointless anyways. Neither PS4 nor PS5 has been able to outsell Switch in Japan, but at the end of the day who cares. PS is doing fine and doesnt need to outsell Switch in Japan. Just as Nintendo doesn't need to constantly outsell everything in Europe. It's a pointless fan-mad competition.

All that matters is the system is selling strongly enough to get new games. Anything else is immaterial. And it is.

Call me crazy, but I’d like to see Xbox doing well, too. It’ll be sad when we lose one of the big three, and it’s looking pretty darn likely.

Tfw I was sharing that post just to point out that it sells good but then it becomes sony talk instead dang. I don't even care about the fact it sold faster! Just that it sold nicely and that's good and I hope that meant more game releases to scoop up in the future.
