Until there is objective evidence (not subjective feelings) that a lack of a big 3D Mario or Zelda in this first year has or will damage Nintendo's business in some way, either short term or long term, then making a sweeping objective statement like the one above comes across as very dishonest.

We already have that, Nintendo's holiday season was underwhelming and Furukawa acknowledged during the earnings report that the Switch 2 is underwhelming in the West (it's mainly Japan where it's selling well). Shareholders have also gotten very vocal about the lack of major game announcements.

  • Console sales (very high)

As I mentioned the high sales are mainly being driven by Japan and it's underwhelmed in the West.

  • Release cadence (roughly once a month)

Not all releases are created equal and one of the issues is that mainly of these "monthly games" are ports/remakes of some kind which are less filling than full games and we've been seeing less of these full games. Filter all of that out for full, first party Switch 2 exclusives and it's more like once every 2-3 months.

1 game per genre is not very compelling, you'll need more than that to drive a console lineup. Now maybe 1 per genre per year is fine, but saying "you got the game you wanted in this genre 12-18 months ago, isn't that enough for you?" is also tone deaf because you've probably long finished that game.

Furthermore, the pacing of those genres is fairly clustered with several games of the same genre releasing relatively close together. Having MKW and Kirby Air Riders about 6 months apart, when we're lucky to get even more than 1 per generation, feels a bit cramped. Getting ACNH S2E, Pokopia, and Tomodachi Life all in a span of 3 months is DEFINITELY excessive. 2D platformers are pretty close to that point too (although perhaps not quite) with Wonder S2E and Yoshi about 2 months apart. You'd prefer they spread the genres out a bit more and better mix things up.

@Bolt_Strike so many things wrong here I don’t know where to begin.

A reminder again that the Switch 2 has been out 9 months. How is it meant to have multiple exclusives per genre across a range of genres in that time?

Clustering of genres? Urm okay, it’s not ideal but at the end of the day if you’re getting the variety in genres it’s not a problem. It strikes me as a non-issue really. Just another thing to complain about when people demonstrate how well the system is doing?

On that note, poor sales? It has outsold the Switch in the same time period. Pretty sure it has higher sales than PS5 at the 9 month mark as well.

Just admit the system isn’t for you at the moment and leave it at that. Clearly the system is doing well anyway.

This is more about what has (or to be more precise, hasn't) been announced for the future. This really isn't the time to be hush hush and only talk about what's coming in the next 3 months, we need more of a roadmap for the entire year at this point in the generation.

Again, the sales have only really been high in Japan, and to add onto this remember that they gave Japan a hometown discount for the Switch 2 so of course it would sell better. But elsewhere it's been underwhelming.

the japan-only switch isn't much of a discount considering how weak yen is. just converting that price to usd doesn't really give a proper story.

also, do we really need a one-year roadmap for games? i just don't see much of a reason for that...

remember; your chicken parm is not safe around me!

I wonder what games will be at the Nintendo PAX East booth. Generally at PAX more recently they focused on already released games but last year at PAX West there was all upcoming releases at the time (Borderlands 4, FFVII Remake, Hades 2, Silksong, Kirby Air Riders, Legends Z-A).
