@NintendoByNature The only way to break the cycle is to understand how to have a modern fully functional online system in line with competition. I fear we maybe here for many decades.

With the new Mario movie coming at the end of the year, I am wondering whether Nintendo will release a game to coincide with its launch.

I doubt it. We didn't get a new Detective Pikachu game (or a port of the 3DS game to Switch) when that released, and same of the Sonic movie. Nintendo's brands already have a strong presence on Switch and there are plenty of Mario/Pokémon games to go around without making a game specifically to promote the movie, but timing a new Mario game to coincide with the movie certainly wouldn't hurt either.

@X-Slayer Every day someone says a direct is coming, they move it back a week, like the people on the island in Persona 5 S, who move the calendar back a day so no one visits a hidden research lab.

@NinChocolate : Considering that Nintendo is still marketing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (soon to be an 8 year old game) and that it continues to dominate the charts in key markets, I don't think Nintendo have anything to worry about as, unlike the likes of say, Ubisoft or Activision, Nintendo doesn't treat their games as being no longer "current" merely because it's been out for a number of months or years and this is reflected in sales figures (though some franchises are less successful in this respect than others). Hell, I see more more TV commercials for years-old Switch games than I do newer ones (Ring Fit Adventure in particular is heavily advertised).

Would it be smart to launch a new game alongside the movie? Sure. But I think such a movie is more of an effort to lure lapsed or non-fans to picking up a Switch rather than drawing existing customers.

There'll definitely be a new Mario game out around the time the movie releases that'll probably benefit from it, but only because there is always a Mario (or related) game released during the autumn/holidays, like SMO (2017), Super Mario Party (2018), Luigi's Mansion 3 (2019), Mario Kart Live Home Circuit (2020), & Mario Party Superstars (2021) before it.

I’ve been seeing people saying that the Nintendo direct might happen in February

@Grumblevolcano There’s no big games from Nintendo themselves in February is there? I feel like now Pokemon is out the way and with quarterly financials coming in real soon, it’s a good time to do a Direct.

@FragRed Would they normally wait until after the quarterly financials? I can't remember

FragRed

@MarioBrickLayer I just thought airing a start of the year Direct around the time of good quarterly financials would be a good thing for your share price. Unless the first half of 2022 was looking pretty empty.

@FragRed That makes sense, I just can't remember the timing in previous years/quarters and if they ever have a Direct before announcing their results. I think they definitely wanted Pokemon Arceus out of the way first.

I think we'll probably get a Direct this month, but probably not until next week or the week after.

It's probably too late to announce anything of particular note for February (nothing worth a physical release), but they could always shadow drop a smaller eShop only title akin to BoxBoy or Mario VS Donkey Kong, then announce a few release dates for things like Splatoon 3, and a couple of announcements (a new summer game & a sneak peek at something coming in the second half of the year).

If it's not February, it's March. I feel confident we're getting something before Kirby. Right?

We're definitely getting a Direct in February (I hope). It'll be a good 5 months since the last one. I'm expecting to see a solid chunk of Forgotten Land, Re-Boot Camp, and Splatoon 3. I wouldn't be surprised if BOTW 2 got a name drop. One thing that I would absolutely love to see is MP4 news. I feel like 3 years is a good amount of time for them to at least drop a cinematic trailer or Alpha footage. Heck, I'd even be happy with some artwork and a name drop. Anything, Nintendo. ANYTHING

Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard and now Sony buying Bungie… maybe this is gonna be a year of nothing but plot twists. I am now going to say Nintendo’s plot twist to follow up everything is that they’re scrapping Directs and are just gonna randomly tweet trailers as and when they feel like doing so.

@StarPoint Honestly, if E3 were a thing this year, I'd disagree with BotW 2 being in the next direct, but now I feel like it's a possibility.

StarPoint

@VoidofLight I think they end up doing an online E3, we would definitely see a lot more of BOTW 2 then. I was just thinking for this next Direct that there would be a name drop and a bit more gameplay/ story to show off. Doesn't have to be anything major, though.

@StarPoint People are saying e3 got cancelled this year, so there's probably a chance of us seeing BotW 2 a bit sooner... hopefully.

Well, I don't know how many of you know RogersBase but he has a podcast and was playing Arceus, after he finished he goes well I'll probably see you guys- oop we're live that's right laughing well… we'll probably see you guys in two weeks wink wink nudge nudge, and if anything happens then then we'll play it. He has leaked things before with inside sources and obviously we usually get a February Direct so I personally think that'll be when.

Games I'm playing right now:
OoT N64
DK64 N64
Lego LotR Wii
Spirit Tracks DS
TotK Switch
