@N00BiSH I wasn't saying classic style not happening because of Star Fox 2, just that Adventures or Assault style coming first would be nice.

@Grumblevolcano I'd rather see the established style return before doing anymore deviations, but I've already made my case about that.

I will say though that Assault's mechanic seems far more likely to make a comeback than Adventures' whole playstyle. It really isn't much of a Star Fox game no matter how you feel about it - by all accounts it's just a lesser Zelda game that was forced to use the Star Fox IP. Not much point in doing that again when you already have Zelda.

I mean they could bring back Assault, they should just not make it a single, linear, 5 hour game with 5/10 on foot gameplay as half of the game.

Honestly it is kind of the Sonic problem where they could improve upon past games but instead they just throw it out and do something new most times. And the one time where they just tried the previous game again it was...Star Fox 64, the best one. Maybe if I had played Starlink and...not even loved it, but at least seen the potential for another game with Star Fox and saw clear parts to improve upon, I'd get the appeal more. Like open space game is inherently cool, I was one of the people hyped for No Man's Sky until it became apparent it needed work (and I hope to someday give it a shot, unlike most Ubisoft games made after 2013).

It could go several ways for me. I see potential in SF2/Commands Real time strategy gameplay. The balance between flying and on foot stuff like Assault or Mass Effect, though more polished take on it. Or the Starlink/No Mans Sky idea where its open galaxy. Ex Zodiac, Fur Squadron, and Wild Blue Skies proven that simple on rail action flight can thrive in the indie scene. They can't be the backbone anymore, at least not of a game that costs $60-$70. And no way Nintendo goes below $40, even if that was the title they wanted. Even then just being an on rail shooter is a 90s standard, not in
Story wise, no more reimages of Starwing/Lylat Wars. You overstayed your welcome with that by 64 3d, Zero was already overkill. I want us to move forward, new mission, threat, and planets. That also includes the tired dynamic and dialogue of Fox, Falco, Slippy and Peppy. and bring characters like Krystal, Miyu, and Fay back.
I hope Nate's right about the online multiplayer stuff. Its just time to move on someway. And bring back the epicness on the scale of Assault, and the graphical prowless of Adventures.

Unfortunately, bringing up Mass Effect inherently implies a focus and active interest in storytelling, so that's by far, the least likely idea in this thread now. :V

I mean, if they had anyone that could even come close to the first two Mass Effects make a Star Fox, omg amazing...actual zero chance of that happening.

Wait. Wouldn't Star Fox Command be the closest thing to Mass Effect Star Fox?

I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to this series, Star Fox 64-style gameplay with a brand new story.

“Mass Effect with Star Fox characters” carries a lot of implications that I don’t think Nintendo’s willing to commit too

  • Heavier emphasis on story which, yeah, given this Nintendo I don’t see them willing to put the effort of expanding the universe. We’ll be lucky if they actually decide to move beyond 64 again
  • Heavier focus on developing relationships with the characters. I feel like Nintendo is more willing to try this but not to the degree of Mass Effect, though I think something similar FE’s Support system would be a good alternative
  • Choosing your main squad. I think this would be the easiest thing to do as it’s simply letting us see the game through more than the same 4 characters every game. Perhaps each level has different interactions between your squad depending on who you take and where. Would be a good excuse to let us play as supporting characters like Bill and Katt, or to bring back Miyu, Fay and Krystal
  • Something a little darker and edgier. Personally I don’t think they need to make series darker than something out of Power Rangers(which has its moments don’t get me wrong). That said I don’t think it’s wrong to expect something with a little more ambition. For as flawed as it is Assault really scratches the itch for a lot of people, it introduces new characters to the fold, had a new threat, felt like it had scope, it had stakes with major characters getting hurt throughout. And part of the reason Command was a disappointing follow up was because people wanted more of it
  • Romancing options. Some Star Fox fans are….passionate to say the least. I feel like people who want “Furry Mass Effect” just want to romance their favorite characters or make their preferred ships happen(whether it be Krystal, Falco, Wolf or whatever). All of this seems fine and, it’s not like Nintendo hasn’t done this before, however I don’t see them committing, at least all the way, with Star Fox. Even if they allow for same-sex romance I don’t see them wanting to portray Wolf as a romanceable option unfortunately

Only that your decisions affect the game’s final outcome. The game is a real monkey’s paw though. People really wanted something more character driven and allowed for them to change and Command gave them that, but not in a way people wanted, going for a very poorly written soap opera instead. Like a majority of the characters aren’t likeable and there’s tons of poor motivation for characters behaving the way they do

@N00BiSH I'm leaning towards Adventures being more likely out of Adventures and Assault to fill the gap left by Zelda ditching the traditional 3D style. Those TotK interviews really makes me think that if the rumoured OoT remake is real, it'll be turning OoT into a BotW style game.

Grumblevolcano

N00BiSH

@Grumblevolcano I sincerely doubt that, going by Zelda's previous history with remakes and ports.

. . .I mean, Star Fox Command does conclude on a disaster of an ending that forced the developers to basically run away, so. . . ducks

( I would note that, snark aside, Command obviously handles its endings in a radically different way than ME3. Arguably its issues are the exact diametric opposite: instead of railroading the player into a narrow and inappropriate conclusion, it instead provides so many endings, that are so incompatible, that its impossible to continue onward without picking one and invalidating the other seven. )

You could always just pick ending 5 for Star Fox Command, where they basically reset everything back to the status quo and everyone makes amends. Leaves room open for more adventures with Fox and Co, removes a lot of the baggage of a sequel to Command would normally entail, yet doesn’t disqualify the Marcus ending from being a possibility in the future

@N00BiSH And Nintendo's in general. It's rare that you see a Nintendo remake change more than graphics, and certainly not an overhaul to the degree being suggested. Best case scenario is making Hyrule Field more BotW-esque to satisfy that, and even that feels extreme by Nintendo's standards for remakes.

I don't see Star Fox making an Adventures style game ever again. It doesn't really fit the IP that well and it only seems to have existed as an adaptation of Rare's Dinosaur Planet concept. We'll probably see an NSO version of Adventures at some point, but that's it. Zelda and Star Fox don't really have much in common gameplay wise so no real reason to build on it.

@N00BiSH
The LA remake actually added quite a lot beyond the big graphics shift.

And the Skyward Sword remake changed some things, too, though not to the same degree.

Those are the two most recent remakes, so that’s what I’m gonna go on. I can easily see them changing and adding things in Ocarina.

Anyway, this is about Star Fox. I think this is gonna be a new game. It’s tempting to think it may be a remake of 64, but I’m just going on vibes that this is a new thing altogether but in the classic formula.

How can you not see the potential here? The world structure is a good foundation for how the game map should be laid out, having an open galaxy with several planets and a few scattered space stations and stuff is a good structure to build on, and there are other gameplay mechanics that can work with Star Fox like different weapon types and facilities on the planet you can build and upgrade (that could also potentially feed into the demand for SF2/Command style tactics mechanics, they could create a gameplay loop where exploring the world for materials can help you build facilities, and building facilities can grow your forces which can be deployed to other planets/locations, and deploying your forces strategically can help open up new planets to develop or protect existing ones from being conquered).

Now there are definitely some things they would need to overhaul, particularly the combat mechanics because they're super repetitive and built around the TTL. They should also have a lot more traditional on-rails missions than what Starlink had (they can probably have locations in the overworld that trigger these missions) and could also stand to add more sidequests and challenges like racing missions, escorts, deliveries, etc. But to say there's no potential or anything to build on? I do not get that take at all.

Oh this is a basic misunderstanding, I meant I've literally not played the game and thus have not even seen if the game even has real potential for a quasi-follow up or not. I would not know.

I did download it a long time ago, when it was on sale and I found out it was easy to get around toys to life requirements for it that way. Should probably get around to it someday.
