Set aside the "leaks" for a moment ( because spoiler, you always should ). Just the fact that Fox McCloud appears in the new Mario movie greatly increases the likelihood that Nintendo is going to do something with the franchise. So. . .what would you hope that something is? What style of gameplay would you like to see? What new story angle, and in which of the three timelines if any?
Don't pull an Adventures/Assault and just stick to the core gameplay of the other titles. I know those games have their fans and I'm not inherently against longtime game series shaking things up(I like nu-Zelda after all), but both of those titles had gimmicks and mechaincs that didn't really move anything forward for Star Fox as a series. A new game that just refines/expands what can be done through the rail shooter gameplay and open-ended structure would be fine by me.
In terms of story, I'd just like it if it didn't stick rigidly to the story of 1/64 again. They've been holding the series back for wayyyy too long, which is detrimental to the potential that the world and characters of Star Fox can provide. Bringing back folks like Miyu, Fay and Krystal, expanding on the roles of Star Fox as a mercenary team in the greater Lylat system beyond the Andross conflict...the SF content in Starlink: Battle for Atlas is probably my go-to example of that sort of thing in action.
Have Hiroshi Yamaguchi lead the music again. Star Fox Zero's OST doesn't get enough flowers imo, which is a damn shame. I thought Yamaguchi and the rest of the Platinum sound team did a stellar job in modernizing SF64's sound and I'd love to hear what could be done on another new title from that team.
Gyro aim! I know some recoil at the idea but having gyro aim that's not shackled to the Wii U gamepad would be a great addition.
While I'm not intrinsically opposed to the idea of action RPGs, I think in the context of Star Fox? The only way I could see that kind of thing being desirable is if Nintendo decided to do a full blown BOTW-scale mega revival. That is, the kind of thing where the answer to "Space sim where you fly around, or Action rpg where you walk around?" is "Yes", with both being fully developed and equally present. And while that isn't impossible, I think it would be way too ambitious for a revival.
I loved the original Star Fox, so I wouldn't mind seeing an expanded on-rails shooter with some free-roaming levels mixed in. I'd prefer the game to only focus on flying, no morphing into tanks. I really enjoy the arcade style approach, and having a new game with incredible visuals and the classic playstyle, would be fantastic.
Starlink style open space. I think this is really the only way to expand Star Fox's appeal in a meaningful way because the on-rails shooting is just too niche a genre, but make something in the vein of Starlink and No Man's Sky and people will flock to it in droves (I personally haven't been traditionally interested in Star Fox but I always wanted to see a game like Starlink so I jumped on it when they announced Star Fox for Starlink). Because as much as people like to complain about open world games, they sell. That's why you continue to see open world proliferate everything. In particular, Nintendo doesn't really have any kind of Starlink/No Man's Sky style game either and there's no real alternative (you could technically do Metroid, but this wouldn't really mix with Metroidvania style gameplay well and you saw how well the desert went over in Prime 4), so Star Fox is really the best outlet for this style of gameplay.
If we're gonna stick to a classic style game, it's gotta be worth its weight. Look towards Kid Icarus Uprising, despite being linear game, it's a meaty game full character and content. Zero was such a vapid and short game that was worth nowhere near the price they asked for(hell it's barely worth the $20-30 clearance prices, and that's with Guard). If you're gonna make this a big, full priced entry, make it worth the asking price
If you have to use the mouse controls, make it optional, requiring unintuitive controls was the absolute bane for both Command and especially Zero. If you wanna get weird, fine, but let it be an option not a requirement
I'm fine with on-foot combat returning, but clean them up and don't just redo the same objective like destroying spawners, that really brought Assault down, especially compared to it's multiplayer which is full of variety. Maybe try a linear structure similar to Kid Icarus Uprising?
You love adding new vehicles to Star Fox and you also love bring in bikes to your franchises evidently regardless if it makes sense or if it works, why haven't you introduced bikes to the one franchise where it would actually makes sense to have them???
Multiplayer is a must, somehow Command is the only entry to have some sort of online MP. If the rumors are to be believed, this would be a great addition to the franchise
Co-op. Literally writes itself. Why haven't we gotten a true co-op for the franchise? 4 friends all hopping on to 4 ships doing missions or dogfights with each other? It seems like a no brainer. It's crazy that the only co-op they've ever made is the dumb Mario Galaxy-esque nonsense in Zero
For the story, for the love of god move on from the Lylat Wars, it's so exhausting to be excited for a game only for them to reveal it's a rehash of a game they've redone multiple times, using the exact same cast, the same story and conflict, the same bosses and set pieces, the same damn dialogue, the same one-liners, the same kinds of one-liners, let it go and move on. I don't need something deep, complex or melodramatic, something on the scale of Power Rangers in Space or Lost Galaxy would be perfect, I just want to see the cast involved in new conflicts or scenarios. Unless they pull an "Everyone is here!" and literally grab the entire franchise's history, timeline, and even multiverse and condense it into one conflict(and I mean literally this is the only way I'd accept this conflict again), move on or don't even bother
Goes in tandem with both a new story and the co-op, but you can restore a lot of good will in the series by bringing back some old fan favorite characters and worlds on top of new ones(in fact it's been so long that they might as well feel like new characters). Krystal, Panther, Miyu and Fay are probably the most notable ones that come to mind(also as an aside, it'd be really nice to see more notable female characters again, not just on the team, but just in general. It's not 1997 anymore guys, hell it was inexcusable in 2016), but maybe even bring back more obscure characters, deep cuts, or even unused characters throughout the franchise's development, like Fara Phoenix, Lucy, Dash, Sabre, General Shears, Free As A Bird, etc. Not only would it be nice to see more than just the same tired cast come back, but to be able to play as them again
If they decide to go the Adventures route again, I really don't want open world as much as I liked Star Link. But my dream game for the series is Adventures getting a Mega Man Legends 2 Style expansion with multiple planets for you to travel to and explore. Dunno if that's for everyone, but I would personally love it
for me if they kept the base gameplay/controls simple (have stuff like mouse or gyro as options but not mandatory) but have a bunch of mechanics/scoring systems/ranking/etc so it ends up being one of those games with a low skill floor but high ceiling for those who like to replay stages to improve their rank.
Star fox 64 felt pretty damn cinematic for an N64 game and it would be cool if the game had some great spectacle and creative scenarios to go alongside the fun gameplay, kind of like how kid icarus uprising was with its flying stages make the game feel like a rollercoaster where you never know what to expect next.
Rather than another reboot it would be nice for it to follow on from the original game(s) again, like the above, have it get creative with the scenarios and situations.
really i would love to see something that is more of an evolution than a revolution when it comes to gameplay, refine the aspects of what made the games loved before down to a T, especially since its been a while since the last game and the on-rails shooter isnt something that the gaming landscape is exactly flooded with, so theres still that niche to fill.
A. Do a proper new game in the style of Star Fox 64, take what worked in the Arwing sections of other games, new story, at least be a sequel to 64/Zero that understands the core appeal of the best of Star Fox (snappy, endearing, memorable gameplay dialogue, easy to get into but difficult to master gameplay experience with multiple sometimes hard to discover routes that encourages replayability instead of trying to force the game to be longer each playthrough with mediocre gameplay segments no one cares about) make sure it has a decent online multiplayer mode.
My one specific idea for it is it would be cool if after getting the "true ending" route, it actually turns out there's an entire second game with new levels where you have to find the best route in an entirely new group of planets before you can get the actual true ending.
B. Make a Star Fox game inspired by Crimson Skies: Highway to Revenge or other similar games that have you fly around a decent sized but not in a bloated open world way type areas that takes up the majority of the game. (with each level and the space between each planet being generally more traditional on-rails segments) The type of game where you can beat it in 12 or so hours but has enough content for double that time, like lots of extra missions and unlockables. Maybe some Rogue Squadron influence.

Okay, generally I am also on Team "Not Another Reboot" ( though I would be willing to tolerate one if there were a good case that the revisited story 'paid for' other good design aspects ). However, going 'Multiverse' actually would potentially resolve one of the more problematic aspects of the franchise story wise- its multiple continuities that are incompatible, but all have their own fans. A multiverse story could be used to pay homage to the various aspects of the series history, and then mix and match to build a composite world with desirable elements from multiple different sources for future use. Granted, this would still require actually deciding on those elements, and would require actually being willing to move onward in the future. Still, those would be issues anyway- a continuation or conventional reboot would still need to decide things like "Wolf McDonnell, likable rival antihero or black hat villain?" and "Does Krystal exist and is she Fox's love interest?"
I mean, the SNES and N64 entries were my childhood and absolutely amazing. And with the way games are today, I'm sure they'd add even more branching paths, score attack/time attack modes, online multiplayer, etc.
But yea, just the classic shooting gameplay is what I want. No need to jazz it up with complicated controls or "unique" movement/vehicles/whatever. Just start with something solid and addictive.
@rallydefault
yeah im hoping the core gameplay builds off those and does them really well rather than having some specific "gimmick" or throwing in even MORE gameplay styles, just fun arcade style shooting with some really cool stuff going on during it
again mentioned it in the previous post but for the time star fox 64 felt super "cinematic" with all these elaborate scenarios (again for the time) and set pieces going on around you, with the characters having dialogue with each other as you played, it felt like you were in the middle of a really cool action space battle while still keeping the focus on the shooting (along with dodging obstacles and whatnot) heck there was even a whole stage reference to independence day.
It is very silly that they couldn't just naturally expand upon what 64 did correctly, ever. Like what did Assault have to just be one story with mediocre on foot gameplay? Why did Command have zero on rails levels to mix up the repetitive parts of the game? Why did Zero have few new ideas outside of the controls?
Like even Sticker Star made more sense on the basis that it was at least the 8th Mario RPG. We got two Star Fox games and then just gave up on what worked because reasons.

I think its because, at heart, the last bunch of Star Fox games existed as tech demos more than as franchise entries. Which is to say, Command existed first to execute on the DS touch controls, and Zero and Guard existed first to show off the Wii-U dual screen system. While I'm not opposed to "tech demo" games, I kind of hope any hypothetical new game doesn't emphasize that aspect quite so much. Like, make it use gyro controls, sure, but don't build the entire game around mouse mode and the video chat button.
I mean, even if that's true, a lot of their issues don't even involve that. If everyone liked the controls or at least took the time to master them, it'd still be a pointless story remake of 64 (itself a remake of Star Fox's story) that completely misunderstood 64's replayability. A review I saw at the time from someone who did learn to master the controls said by the time he did, he 100% it and thought it was BEGGING for online multiplayer to justify the time spend mastering it.
A lot of people didn't like DKC Returns' motion controls but its still widely beloved and considered a worthy continuation of the series. Rayman Legends' multiplayer has elements of feeling like they want to show to Nintendo they can do Wii U features but not only...were they the best at that, quite frankly, there's still a ton of content not related to that that made it a compelling, complete, high quality platformer that people liked on other platforms.
If they make Star Fox into more homogenized "open world" slop like Prime 4 was I'm so done. Please make a rail shooter that looks pretty, don't retread 64 too hard and have fun online multiplayer with matchmaking.
@gamering Yup, I bounced off MP4 massively.. maybe the only game that I've brought in recent years which I really regretted spending the $$$.
I'd love to see Nintendo roll out a SF game with some similar principles/mechanics to the latest Armored Core.... mission based in nature, with some kind of hub world to customise your ship and/or base.
Online co-op could be really fun as well, and I'd love to see the potential for an excellent character creator (you could play as one of the main 4 - or alternatively create your own custom origin character)
