The issue isn't that Silksong is only 20 bucks while Nintendo puts out full priced games. The issue is that Silksong is probably gonna outsell the best selling Metroid game, even only including sales on Switch 1 and 2, because Nintendo would rather cut out a large quantity of people playing their game if it means it stays expensive. And as a huge Metroid fan, its incredibly frustrating.
Ok, I meant 2D Metroid specifically. There was already a lot of pushback to Dread being 60 bucks, and it...is the best selling Metroid, but not by a gigantic portion even though its a Switch game going against games on the Gamecube and NES. And I've not seen a bunch of new people jump onto Dread the same way I've seen for years and years with Hollow Knight. Like for all the talk of evergreen Nintendo titles, there's plenty that make a splash at launch and seemingly don't sell much of anything afterwards.
At the time I kinda dismissed it because tbh it is worth 60 bucks, but the more I think about, there are probably a lot of people who didn't buy it specifically for the price point for a 2D Metroid, when there are plenty of games in the same genre that are 20 bucks at launch with somehow bigger percentage off for sales than Dread has ever had.
By contrast, I think the...fittingly comparable hype cycle and memes to Silk Song Prime 4 has had, and more importantly being an FPS-ish 3D game, multi-console, year 1 Switch 2 game, will likely make it best selling Metroid, and at the very least be more understandable to more people when it is full price. But it feels like otherwise, there's gonna be a clear ceiling for Metroid and Hollow Knight is gonna leave it in the dust and its so obviously because of the price.

People are so detached from reality. I mean, I sometimes hate reality as much as the next guy, but dang.
Like even in this thread - obviously Silksong can cost much less than anything Nintendo or another big company puts out because Silksong has like a tenth of the overhead of the bigger guys. They can afford to charge less, sell a certain amount, and make a certain amount of profit that they're targeting.
I don't get why that formula mystifies people.
We see Nintendo do it with their smaller games that have much smaller dev teams. It's a pretty obvious relationship between dev costs and product cost.

I think that's what happens when nearly zero 2D games have been full priced this century. Or at the very least nearly zero notably successful 2D games, its basically just the big co-op platformers ala NSMBWii and Little Big Planet and the like. The only other exceptions I can even think of are Metroid Dread and the most recent Prince of Persia (and even that's arguable since Ubisoft didn't seem to find it to be successful even at 2 million sales (though in that case Ubisoft is in the wrong, that was obviously a success all things considered)). And when anyone Steam user can have an ocean of 20 dollar games they got 80% off, 60-70's a tougher sell.
Also doesn't help that something like Rayman Legends went so far to justify being full priced, to the point of including almost all the levels from the previous Rayman, and doesn't get nearly enough credit for it. Most 3D games are worth less than Legends in terms of quantity + quality tbh.
