Hi guys,
I am planning to buy the console in a week few days after its release.
My main concern are the games that I already own, should I expect a better performance, for example, with Age of Calamity and Echoes of wisdom, or is it like with PS5 Pro, where I do not get any boost in FPS and need to wait for enhanced version?
Do you guys know what enhanced games will be released day 1, and if the mentioned games will get either FPS boost out of the box or we will have to wait for an upgrade?
Also a question, why did they decide to release enhanced version for kirby which in my opinion runs fine and not for their really struggling (low FPS) games that I mentioned?
The short answer is we don’t really know. There are certain games, like Pokemon Scarlet/Violet and Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, are getting free patches that improve things like resolution and frame rate, and I think those should be available at launch. However, we don’t know if games that don’t have these patches will benefit from the Switch 2’s more powerful specs or not. No doubt people will test that basically as soon as the console launches so you won’t need to wait long to find out.
As for Kirby, Nintendo says its Switch 2 edition will improve the graphics and frame rate, as well as adding the new Star-Crossed Workd story. I’ve not played it myself so I don’t know, but maybe it runs at less that 1080p on Switch 1, or doesn’t keep a consistent 60fps. Again, we’ll know all the details once it’s out and people have tested it.
Games should run inherently better on Switch 2 but they will still have to abide by limits set in the games themselves. So when it comes to Echoes of Wisdom, the article mentions an update with improved resolution and HDR but there's no mention of frame rate. This is because the game already targets 60 fps. Now it will just actually hit it.
So in short, if a game is capped at 30 fps, it won't run at 60 fps unless it receives an update. But if the game had trouble hitting even that 30, you'll at least get more stable frame rate. Same goes for resolution.
As for Kirby, it comes with new content. They call it Star Crossed World. It's a separate mode that is exclusive to Switch 2.
@Mogruk Since switch 2 uses some emulation for backward compatibility, that means how-well-a-switch1-game-runs is more of a case by case basis. Some games need more work than others to make them run. This is why there's been no blanket statement for performance improvements of switch 1 games, why nintendo had a page for keeping track of switch 1 game testing for switch 2, and also why we have to wait until switch launch for people/journalists get their hands on a console to find out.
@Mogruk Hello, these are all completely valid questions, but I think they are all very answerable.
Firstly, better performance for games without specific updates. The Switch 2 doesn't use traditional backwards compatibility, but instead something a little different. Basically, it seems like original Switch games will have the extra power available to use. While it's not going to do things like increase frame rate or resolution (because the games aren't coded to do that), it will likely smooth out performance substantially. So Age of Calamity for example will likely be able to maintain a solid 30 fps now since that's its target, however it won't run at 60 because it's not programmed to run that way. The link below contains a creator's voice article talking a little about how BC works. https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/ask-the-developer-vol-16...
As for Kirby, to each their own I suppose. The lower frame rate (the game only runs at 30 on Switch 1) was very noticeable to me when I went back and played it recently. More likely than not though, it seems like it was more of an excuse to do DLC with that new Star-Crossed World thing. Anyway if you have any other questions, you can definitely still post them here, but they might get more attention in the thread below. https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch-2/nintend...
Edit: It appears my post is a little redundant with others in the thread. My mistake, they were posted before I finished writing this wall of text lol.
Does no one here watch what Youtubber "Cycu1" does for comparisons. Others have shown it's on level of PS5 and Xbox S levels but not power levels. For someone at this point to bring up "red herring" rants just means they shouldn't buy Switch 2 at this point or later. Also did you not watch those streamers doing the Nintendo Live events showing all the gameplay and Nintendo Directs? If your already asking such rants at this point then one shouldn't get a Switch 2 as it will never fulfill their disappoints they have ingrain already.
Nobody else is asking it, so I guess I will: where do you plan on finding a Switch 2 a few days after launch? I wouldn’t expect any meaningful restocks for a few weeks probably.
@rallydefault I'm sure it will depend on the specific store, but I asked the guy at my local Gamestop because I did not pre-order one, and he said that they were given double the amount that they have pre-orders for, so getting there any time even near opening (which is 11am because they are not doing a midnight opening) should give me a very good chance at getting one. Of course, that is still day of and not a few days after, but if there are that many there might be a good chance if you just ask around.
Echoes of Wisdom is getting an enhancement patch so in theory should run at 1440p/60fps with HDR. Age of Calamity is not and had a 30fps cap, theoretically it should now meet that cap rather than hovering around 25fps like it did on Switch
@rallydefault
It probably depends on what distribution is like in their region. Honestly here in Australia I have a pre-order just to be safe but I wouldn't be that surprised if you could just walk into the shops and grab one a few days later. That's usually how it is here
Although OP's profile says they're from Israel so.... I'm not sure how confident they should be for stock allocations given the country is literally at war currently

@skywake
Oh, wow. Here in the U.S., that would be highly doubtful. Most console launches completely sell out on launch day, and then major restocks don't hit until a few weeks later. Even the Wii U was tough to find after launch day for a little while.
@rallydefaultEven the Wii U was tough to find after launch day for a little while.
Did you not notice the WiiU inventory and how it was launch has nothing to do or compare with Switch or Switch 2 launch. They have nothing in common but people keep grabbing the WiiU and it has nothing to do with Switch 2.
@sethfranum
Chill, brosefina. I said “even” the Wii U, but I was just making a point about console launches in general. Most of the time, regardless of console, they sell out initially and don’t get a big restock for a few weeks.
@rallydefault WiiU is totally irreverent to Switch 1 and Switch 2 success and inventory. When people bring up WiiU it's for Nintendo bashing plain and simple.
@rallydefault
Update on stock here. It was still available the afternoon of the launch in most stores but it was sold out the next day. The Pro Controller is in a similar situation. A couple of weeks till the next shipment. Plenty of cases, spare JoyCon and cameras but
Certainly seems to be moving more units than the Switch and Wii U did at launch. I went to the shops today to grab a case and they hadn't put them out yet. The staff there looked pretty worn out, and apologetic, when I asked. "Yes, they're back here, sorry we've been flat out and haven't had a chance to put them out yet"
