@GrailUK They should include lore though, it's all well and good featuring random easter eggs from the games but if it has no context for them it's then just random rubbish cluttering up the screen. Besides Nintendo were hands on with the film so it's not like the Minion guys were deciding the lore of Mario now.
I did find it funny people were saying because Nintendo are producing the film it will be good when most people keep talking about how meddling producers who don't understand movies are the ones to ruin them.
@Rambler Judging that info with the trailer that shows Luigi is the one who was capture therefore he's the one being forced to marry Bowser really makes me really want to see it now!
Seems the reviews are pretty mixed but I'm wondering whether that's just because the way people are approaching the movie. I haven't seen it yet, plan to go tomorrow, but I'm honestly just going into it the same way I'd go into, well, a Mario game I guess. The plot is probably pretty thin and the movie is not going to be a mind bender or a thriller. There's going to be some flashy visuals, there's going to be some in-jokes and references and at some point they'll play some theme or show some character and I'll be hyped it was included
I'm going into with my expectations about the same as they were for Lightyear or Wreck it Ralph. I'm not expecting Studio Ghibli or like Pixar in their prime tier great. I'm certainly not expecting something that will please critics. I'm expecting a nostalgia hit, and that's fine. Different movies do different things. Sometimes you want to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, sometimes you want to watch Con-Air. That's just how it is

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
@skywake I don't think the reviews are actually mixed though. Rather than having high rave reviews and low bad reviews like say a Babylon did last year or a Kevin Smith film which is a mix of loved/hated it most of them are saying it's a mid kids animated movie but with some saying it's 2/5 and others saying it's 3/5 which makes the tiny difference between a postive and negative review result.
I think most people on here will be happy just to see big budget Mario stuff on the big screen so it doesn't really matter.
Just came back. Lots of Easter eggs. Lots of eye candy. Enjoyed it but remembering it’s a Mario movie and story telling is not its best thing. Kids enjoyed it and say it’s the best thing ever but they also say that for every film they come back from.
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
GameXplain is so unbelievably cringe. Do a favour to yourself and don’t watch their most recent video with all the movie references from the Mario movie. The narrator sound like a giant loser with no friends, especially when he talks about donkey Kong references
Can anyone confirm based on the credits if they actually did get Jeannie Elias for the TV commercial line? Or if any other members of the typical Mario voice cast cameo, like Samantha Kelly (there was one Toad in the Game Awards clip that sounded like her Toad voice, so I'm curious)?
On the way to the theater now…. In my Brewster/The Roost shirt since I don’t have any Mario shirts for some reason.

Wow, I just got back from the theater, and man, that was way better than I was expecting it to be. I genuinely thought it was just gonna be another garbage Illumination film, like the ones they've been churning out forever, but I really saw the passion behind it. It felt like something that Miyamoto desired to work on, and this was sort of a fulfillment of his creation in a way. It's not groundbreaking by any means; the story is really basic, the humor is alright at best, and some of the voice acting was pretty boring. Also, what was with the licensed music?? Holding Out for a Hero and Mr. Blue Sky? Really? The movie would have been much better without it. But as a whole, the great animation, amazing references to both Mario games and other Nintendo IP, the Star Fox easter egg, in particular, was awesome and a really solid composed soundtrack put it over the top for me. I walked out of the theater thoroughly impressed, and as for someone who is wayyy too cynical when it comes to movies, I think that's a great thing. I actually cannot wait to see where Nintendo takes their movies in the future, and hopefully, a sequel comes sooner rather than later. Zelda movie, anyone?
7/10 Good

Headed home now. That was amazing. And the mention of Iwata in the credits… he passed in 2015, how long has this been in the works for?
Edit: I also may have recorded a bit of the DK Rap part… no one tell Cineplex please…
