Definitely the 2D games. I've played the 3D entries and I find them fussy, cluttered, and even confusing at times. And artillery-type games, which is what Worms is, are more tailored to a side-on view, which allows for far greater accuracy with aiming, gauging distances and so on.
The most recent Worms game I played is Worms WMD on the Switch, and it is simply brilliant. I can recommend it to anyone who likes Worms games.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
Nope. Two classic 3D titles (Worms 3D and 4 Mayhem), one semi-spinoff (Worms Forts) and finally, one remake (Ultimate Mayhem).
But, onto the question: 3D Worms games are definitely better. Aiming in them requires so much more skill and thought, and the maps are way more varied. And don't even get me started with all the potential for Virtual Reality (which may very well turn out to be the main gimmick of the upcoming Worms game).
Too bad Mayhem, the remake of which is the only 3D Worms game with online still being officially supported, focuses more on casual play. The skill ceiling of a 3D Worms could potentially be extremely high.
Huh. I legit thought Worms 3D was the only one and that it was considered a failure. Just because in hindsight I've seen most people dislike Worms 3D except...basically me. Honestly, my only major experience with the series and I liked it a lot, despite its problems.
