Ignorance and people who think they're better than they really are at everything. That pretty much goes hand in hand with ignorance, though.

In my opinion, SpongeBob went downhill after the movie. I think the movie came out right in the middle of the 4th season. After that, many of the original talent were replaced. Paul Tibbit took over Derek Drymon's job as creative director, and many of the writers were changed. The newer episodes are much more frantic, like they are trying to cram as much stuff in an episode as possible. There's barely any more character development, and the pacing is too quick. The jokes aren't even that funny anymore, like they're trying too hard to come up with gags.
And that's my berserk button, cartoons that lose their charm. It happens all the time with shows that are dragged on and on just for ratings purposes.
Ahhh, sucks to hear. Knowing me I'll probably buy up to the 3rd Season and that's that. And speaking of Gag's, ever since Family guy reared it's ugly head I've noticed gradually that a lot of cartoons have become more slap stick, all over the place and totaly gag reliant. The Simpsons has even fallen culprit to this....Everybody comes off so sarcastic in it now, it's like "hey Look at me! look what I can do" Marge, Lisa, Bart they're all show off's now....
It's like the family oriented feel, the heart, the moments of seriousness, anger and sadness, just the stories and character and relationships have all gone down the drain in the Simpsons in favor of lame Family guy-like gags, unfunny dialogue and scenes with ZERO heart and over the top crap that goes even into bugs bunny ville, pushing that semi realistic vibe that the Simpons used to have into whacky cartoon ville at times. The Simpsons used to have it all and it was the funniest cartoon on cable as well during it's beginning run.
It's 'too much' There's never a serious or sad moment, it's turned into a joke infested circus, and it's not even funny on top of it all. The Simpsons gradually went down hill after Season 8...And now it's just draging itself to hell.
There is nothing wrong with gags in cartoons. Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, etc. used slapstick comedy for their main jokes. The 1940's were known as the "screwball years" in animation. All the major cartoon studios were making these zany, wacky cartoons that pushed the boundaries of comedy. Some of the greatest cartoonists in the industry made their careers doing this stuff: Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, they all perfected this style of comedy.
Tex Avery became one of the most influential cartoonists in the industry. He inspired Bob Clampett, William Hanna & Joseph Barbara, etc. to make their cartoons as unrealistic as possible. This was in direct contrast to what Walt Disney was doing at the time. Movies like Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, etc. were based on good storytelling, not jokes.
John Kricfalusci (creator of Ren and Stimpy), arguably one of the most outspoken critics of modern animation, has stated that Tex Avery and Bob Clampett were his main influences. Countless other modern cartoonists have tried to imitate the style of the classic animators, but no one can improve perfection.
The closest we've come to the style of 1940's cartoons has been with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Animaniacs, and the 2nd season of SpongeBob.

@WaveBoy I never saw Bump N the Night. I enjoy Robot Chicken for the parodies and sometimes witty dialogue, but overall the show relies too much on toilet humor and sex jokes.
If you want good claymation, may I suggest Wallace and Gromit? Tim Burton has made a few stop-motion movies: Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Actually Henry Sellek made Nightmare Before Christmas, but Burton came up with the concept. Henry Sellek also made James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline.
