The generic realistic "Lord of the Rings" look most western fantasy games employ. It just has no charm, IMO.
I know the anime look is clichéd as well, but at least there's a wide array of anime styles (due to different artists). There's only one style to realistic however, and that's to make it look real. That's the main reason I think the "Lord of the Rings" looks is (and always will be) tired out.

What.
Witcher loos different to Skyrim looks different to Amalur
All anime looks the same to the untrained eye too.
It's pretty silly in games where you only control one character when your party members can die as many times as you have reviving items, but if you get KOd once it's BACK TO THE TITLE SCREEN WITH YOUUUU. I mean c'mon, teach your party members how to use a stupid phoenix down.

"Aw he died, and he had all the revives."
"Why don't you go get them from his bag?"
"EW no way! He's dead, dude!"
A Lives System just for the sake of it - When losing all your lives means nothing or lives are really easy to get it's just unnecessary. Not necessarily a huge problem as games such as Yoshi's Island have been amazing regardless of this issue - but it's really annoying that it's still around just for the sake of convention.

It's weird that you call it the Lord of the Rings look. As if the books existed in a vacuum from which all which all medieval inspired fantasy springs from.

Game over screens that bleakly say "GAME OVER" just to rub it in your face, like you don't already know you lost. Those are bad.

This is really helpful to read for someone (like me) who is currently working on a game, it let's you know what you shouldn't put in the game because people think it gets old fast or just isn't fun or is stupid, etc. I've found some really helpful stuff in here, it has made me think twice about some of the stuff I wanted to do, and also feel better about some others. Good stuff here!

Characters in games telling you to press buttons as if they know they are in a game. The person your playing as would be like: What the F*** are you talking about!?!?!?
The one I'm probably most sick of is the disparity between male and female outfits in most RPGs. It's really not doing a lot to dispel the old nerdy gamer stereotype.
Also the whole "grow up in a village where some/many people know that you were secretly the son/daughter/spawn of some powerful person but hide the secret from you until one day you find out you're destined for greatness and conquer the evil/world" thing. It's such a worn premise that it really needs to go.
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

Are you kidding? Most JRPGs these days have more stripperific costumes for the guys than the ladies.
