I understand why Japanese developers do it (they need to pander to their core demographic), but sometimes the "the world's about to end, time to send in the teenagers" plots can wear a bit thin.

Why not have a JRPG where an overworked salaryman joins a party with a construction worker, an old maid and a NEET every once in a while?

@RevolverLink I love that idea

Also the protagonist who's lost his memory, I find this one to be more overused than the rest of the cliches you guys mentioned.

I hate it when a character dies permanently just for drama in a world where the use of magic to revive dead allies is common.

Also, Gackt. Is it just me or does every single Final Fantasy male protagonist look like him? That's more like annoying character design, though.

Oh and the usual "Villain is causing troubles in spinoffland! Let's stop him by partying/dancing/playing cards/racing/doing sports!" story most spin-offs use.

  • Bullet Time
It's what made Max Payne unique and now it's everywhere. One of the first games I saw reuse it was Blood Rayne, or as some have labeled it, Legacy of Payne.
  • Stealth Kills
This has trickled down into just about every genre by now.
  • Regenerating Health
It makes sense in Halo. Call of Duty, not so much.
  • Head Shots
Why? Your chest is just as vulnerable as your head, if not more so.
  • Control Gravity
This last one has gotten way too popular lately. The worst part is how everyone tries to package it as something new you've never seen before... again.

And people complain that all FPS's look the same, at least they've got reasons for it, JRPGs have no excuse!

Oh, and this, so much this:

it annoys me when you see characters talk in games and the voice just doesn`t either suite the character or the voice sync is all wrong.
i know some of the sync problem is usually down to the original script sometimes being in another language and then re-written for an english dub. thing is, if they hire good script writers and voice actors, the sync is usually way better.

Through fear that the final boss battle won't be considered "epic" enough they make the boss take on about 10 different forms and have the battle drag on for what seems like an eternity. But all the red herring endings don't really work now because I'm totally expecting them, "Yay, I've killed the final boss! But let me guess... it's not over yet and in a moment I'm going to have to take on its floating disembodied head... yep, there it is. What a bloody surprise..."

Anything with a timer or the worst - having to protect someone, an NPC from dying. It worked in RE4 but in so many games especially strategy games in the past had you being infuriated for some helpless soul who was getting killed.

I definately agree with what some of you have said as some of mine are the same:

1. Halfway through a story, a significant character dies in your arms and can't be saved. Which is strange because I have like 763892 Phoenix Downs and another eleventy brazillion healing potions and last time I used them on a party member, they seemed to work just fine.
2. Outfits that are so ridiculously over the top you have to wonder how someone can even stand up straight much less be involved in freaky martial arts combat.
3. Unwinnable battles. I just wiped out an entire world full of bad guys, but I'm going to step out of a barn, know exactly where the 8 bad guys are outside, and they still manage to kill me in a cut-scene?
4. Loss-of-memory main characters.
5. Effeminately dressed main characters. Does 3/5 of the male members of my party REALLY have to look like drag queens?
6. Saving the same damned princess over and over and over again.

(and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over)

Meh I'm not to bothered by important death providing they work within how the game world works. If for example healing people involves using magic but their soul has been completely destroyed, absorbed, etc it makes since why it doesn't work. In fact, that can be said about a lot of these "issues" providing there's a good enough explanation for something it's not really a problem. There's only an issue if things don't make sense when factoring in the game world itself (or something happens way too often)

Intentionally bad gameplay. I don't care why you did it, you made your game worse. I'm kinda fine with Suda51 because Suda51 but this is always the excuse I hear for survival horror and that's why I've never gotten into that genre outside of the more actiony RE4 and Dead Space. I've never got the logic of being intentionally bad "to make you care more". The villian made you do boring tasks, so you hate him. No, I hate the developer.
