Topic: What games NEED remakes?

This is a topic I’ve been thinking about for a while, and I figured why not ask it now. We all get really excited when our favorite games get remade such as Okami, FF7, Luigi’s Mansion, Crash, Spyro, Shadow of the Colossus, the plethora of Zelda remakes, the list goes on. But the thing about all those games... they were all good, if not great, to begin with. So what game did you not like, that has potential for a remake? Mine would have to be the original Mother, there’s potential there, but there is to much grinding and the graphics are a bit to simplistic for my taste, even by NES standards.

Just a geek that likes video games, and spends to much time playing Smash Bros. and Fortnite.

Could be interesting if they remade Zelda 1 and 2. I haven't played more than a few minutes of either because they're so alienating to a modern audience, but I hear they're good if you can figure out what to do and get past the generally confusing design.

I'll go with Legend of Mana and Monster Rancher 2.

Those 2 games are nearly unheard of anywhere even though they are very excellent games :')

Legend of Mana - It has one of the most interesting way of storytelling as well as making the world map. It's really great! Not to count the multitudes of pets and equipments too. It just need some extra polishing with QoL updates and I think it'll still be great without too much change.

Monster Rancher 2 - Monster breeding game, with Zuum. I remember loving to play this just constantly in the loop of training, getting better monsters, ensuring they reached great Tournament levels... It's just so much fun. And then the sadness hits when your Monster dies and you go and make new one... :')

1. Flawed games that could very clearly be improved with some changes
2. 80s 2D games or 90s 3D games that could use at least some graphical upgrades. (see: Metroid: Zero Mission and OOT 3D)
3. The next releases for series where Nintendo are clearly just gonna remake the entire series in order, forever, so why not (HD Sinnoh and FE3 are inevitable, and I still kinda want a Metroid Prime styled remake of Super Metroid)

These are the main games that should take priority imo.

Super Mario Sunshine could use a remake. The mechanics of the game feel really great but the game was a pain to 100% due to those blue coins.

I'd also love to see a remake of Donkey Kong 64 that streamlines the game a lot more and changes the mediocre bonus games to more fun bonus games.

Games I enjoy but are flawed and could be much better:
Nights into dreams, Sonic CD, Tower of Doom and Shadow of Mystara (more balanced difficulty for single player), Dragon's crown (the game could be good but the gameplay sucks, it is too fast and not "physical" enough

Games that I hate and should be better:
Sonic 2

Games that are too old and should have better graphics:
Zelda 1

Games that are good but seems bad because of ugly ports:
Castle of illusion remake (it is great on Pc, it seems ugly on PS3)

@HailKaiba Came to say Super Mario Sunshine. It gets my vote as well.

Not sure if it can even happen, but Mother deserves a remake. Mother 3 holds up tremendously, and Earthbound does too despite a few quirks. Mother 1 has very noticeable design flaws that are kind of baffling even for an NES game.

No game -needs- remakes. I'd rather play the games in their original state, unless it's impossible for whatever reason.

I'm thirding Sunshine, if only to get the chance to play it without needing to hunt down a GameCube or a certain Wii.

I also agree on Mother 1/Beginnings. The game is certainly playable, but does require some grinding to help prepare for insane difficulty spikes. TBH, I don't know if I would have finished the game without a guide.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

Megman Legends would be my choice, hands down. As amazingly fun as the game still is, it needs polish in basically every possible way. Camera, controls, graphics, audio, level design tweaks, balancing tweaks, a mapping system (please). It's been years since I've played, but I don't remember there being any way to track sidequests either.

Phantasy Star Online for me. The second one is worlds away in terms of character and atmosphere. A clean slate and a return to form for this series would do it good...as well as releasing in the West.

After the likes of Ultra Street Fighter 2, Wonderboy in Monster Land and the upcoming Toki...I think there is a very strong case for remakes with updated graphics (giving you the option to play with the original style) whilst keeping the soul of the game (it's gameplay) intact and remain faithful to the game. I would love more remakes with so much passion in them.

The Time Splitters games, both of them. With improved graphics and controls. Could be a real winner for the Switch.

I'd also like to see a true 3D re-imagining of the Advance Wars games. The GameCube and Wii versions were kind of okay-ish, but they were and felt quite different from their 2D siblings, so I'd like to see what they could do with those now.

People on here that know me, will also know that I'd also be highly enthusiastic about a Wave Race and 1080 Snowboarding remake, both the N64 and GameCube versions. But I'd also be perfectly happy with a new game in those series...

But what's possibly my most wanted game, and a game that really DOES need a remake, is Eternal Darkness from the GameCube. Why it NEEDS a remake, is simple: a lot of the "mind tricks" aka sanity effects in the game don't work anymore, seeing as some of the tricks are based upon old types of TV's, so seeing something like this on the screen of a modern HD TV isn't going to fool anyone anymore:

Untitled
So, they would need to address that, and probably make it smart, in that the software can detect which TV it is displayed on, so that the correct volume control is shown. And there are more of those 90's specific scares in there that just don't convince gamers anymore, so they would really have to dig through all the sanity effects to re-imagine them for a modern age. The end result could be REALLY cool, though...

@ThanosReXXX I've never actually played Eternal Darkness, but that would be excellent! With modern consoles having more complex UIs there is so much potential here - I'm thinking things like false updates or errors interrupting your game. Or how about taking advantage of hardware features like HD rumble?

At least 2'8".

ThanosReXXX

@Buizel That as well, but the whole "your TV is acting weird" tricks that the game contains are the ones that would stand out the most as hopelessly out of date, so they would definitely need to fix those.

Most of the other so-called sanity effects present in the game (I won't give away any spoilers) will still work perfectly fine today, because they're only related to the game and the console itself and not to the TV that the game is displayed on.

@subpopz I agree, those games were burdened by those control schemes.

Another game I thought of was Metal Gear, the MSX 2 one. I’ve heard it can be very vague and has it’s fair share of cheap difficulty. It would be cool if they remade it in a more modern style, while getting rid of the stuff that didn’t work. Heck, it would sell more copies than MGS Survive.

Sensible World of Soccer. The 2D football (or soccer) game has died as a concept, outside of mediocre indies, which is a real shame. PES and sometimes Fifa hit some real heights, but neither has that pinball arcade madness of Sensi.

Some games, however, don't need remakes. The FFVII remake fills me with dread, for example. I would MUCH rather see a remake of Vagrant Story, with a souped up combat system and slicker animation.
