So, just about everyone has had at least one console fail on them, and everyone seems to care about which consoles are the "most robust" etc.
So let's get anecdotal. Have you ever had a console fail, and if so, which ones/ why?
My original Game Boy failed (admittedly, after about 15 years, so I don't think this counts), when the screen decided it had had enough of displaying pixels. My Gamecube failed when the laser died. My DSi failed when the L button stopped working. One of my PSPGos had a sound failure.
I'm fairly sure I'm the unluckiest long term Nintendo fan ever.
I beat my Gamecube into the ground for a good five years before I got a Wii and then sporadically after that until she gave out. She took it like a boss and I will remember her forever. I'm actually thinking about turning her into a box and finally getting use out of the handle. n___n

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
A second time my Wii had to be sent in because it wouldn't read discs. Only Mario Kart Wii for some odd reason...
A third time when my Wii was deleting old messages sent by friends, and I grew very impatient. Turned off my Wii and it was the whitest brick I've ever seen in my life.
Xbox 360 for the Red Ring.
Gamecube died years ago from too much time with Animal crossing I'm assuming. (I went through 3 games...)
PS2 was fried by a lightning storm
Soon my PS3 will be in repair too as I dropped it one day.

The only system I have had fail on me are the slim Playstations 2. I have on the third one now. The first one the motor burned out and the discs wouldnt read the second one the laser died in it.
The third one now I have to keep the multitap plugged in at all times cause the part you plug into the controller port broke off in it, but I cant really count that as a failer cause I did that myself by stepping on it.

Xbox360. Got it a few days after launch, but a few months later the discs just stop spinning. Sent it in for a warranty repair and manage to get a refurbished on with a power cord that fail a few months after that. Returned the 360 and power cord for another system. Not to long after I got that one I get the RROD error. Another free repair later and it quits on me again. Not sure what happened that time. Had to pay for a out of warranty repair. After I get that one back I was pretty much over my Xbox moment so I kept it for a few months then traded it in to Gamestop for store credit.
Game Boy Advance's D-pad broke Game Boy's volume stopped working Gamecube's laser stopped working (got it replaced for free though outside the warranty) Wii's laser also stopped, but I got it repaired (sadly not free this time) DSi's R button only works some of the time (GS didn't seem to notice when I traded it for a 3DS) PS3 had many, many minor issues but nothing that did permanent damage (aside from my sanity)

Just every single Nintendo console I ever owned D: well, depending on how you define "failed me" xP
To elaborate:
SNES... not really sure what happened, just... stopped working one day. Was a long time ago though, don't remember very well GCN stopped reading discs, and the warranty was out… have yet to get a new one Wii: laser whatever thing went out, got it repaired GBA: trigger buttons stopped working GBA SP: trigger buttons, bleh you L/R Phat DS has some pixels go out, and soon after the hinges broke D: oh and the trigger buttons DSi: R button is crap, I have to press it really hard and in the middle for it to work
My first 360. My second 360. My third 360. That is all. Everything else, including my Atari 2600, ColecoVision and NES are still going strong today (though i've had plenty of Coleco controllers crap out on me). and for the record, i'm on my 4th 360, but have only paid for 2, or really 1 and a half — my original, and then the slim that i traded in my busted 3rd 360 towards
Hm Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSI, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3ds, Wii U i won't go into the details.

im curious how can so many of you have broken buttons lol do u smash your thumbs on them or something ? i would chalk it up to playing it alot to be the reason but that cant be since thats what i do too sometimes so i think some of you guys smash your thumbs or fingers hard on the buttons causing them to break
