Before I begin let me clarify what I meant in the title, what I refer to is the opening song or video that plays before you press start, A, or whatever to enter the game. I am not referring to the sequences that happen after pressing start. If I were all there picks of mine would be final fantasy 6,7, and 9 lol. with that out of the way. . .
What are your top 3 video game openings, What openings just make you super psyched and excited to play the game?
3.) Final fantasy VII 'Prelude'
I can't help but to wait for a couple minutes for the final fantasy VII press start screen goes away and the 2nd best version of 'prelude' plays until it shows a final fantasy VII logo.
2.) Persona 5 'Wake up, Get up, Get out There'
It doesn't matter how many times I play persona 5 (I bought it for PS4 on launch day) I just can't help but to sit though the opening FMV and song just getting pumped listening to that beautiful jazzy song (btw it's superior to the Persona 5 Royal opening)
1.) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty opening.
Again this is another game that I bought on launch day way back on PS2 and from the first time I booted up the game and listened to the first third and it's electronic like music, to the middle third kinda suspenseful music, the the final third very moving and patriotic part that just makes you want to stand up and salute Solid Snake as the hero he is. It just gives me the warm and fuzzies all over.
I'm not sure I can think of a top 3 off the top of my head, but one that definitely springs to mind is Solatorobo: Red the Hunter. It has a fully animated intro which was very impressive for a DS game, and I always watched it every time I played it. It even has a completely different alternate intro which plays in the second half of the game.
I can’t think of a top 3…I probably have seen multiple game intros that I like, but I either can’t remember them or haven’t played them, so I’ll list just one.
Like what another reply here said, probably Banjo-Kazooie for me. The intro does a really good job at showcasing the personalities of the characters with how they act in the intro, paired with the really upbeat music that sets the goofy tone of the game. It’s the charm and silly characters that make me love the intro, and I’d even go on and say it has one of the most iconic opening songs in gaming yet. Sad that the later games didn’t have opening intros though.
I have seen a few intros for the Persona games and think the music is amazing and animation is gorgeous, but I haven’t played any of them so I don’t think I can comment much on them. My most favorite is probably the intro for 3. Burn My Dread is such a calming, emotive and beautiful song.
MegaMan 2, because it's just epic. I have no nostalgia for this because we were a Sega house but coming back to it as an adult? It just goes way harder than it has any reason to
Super Mario Kart, for the nostalgia
Wind Waker, because it's just great
Honorable mention to Mario Paint
Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
Everyone will have their favourite but Ultimate was the first game I owned and properly played. Everytime I watch the opening in full, it takes me straight back to the first time I played it and how hyped I was for it.
Everyone already said it, but Smash Bros! SSBB was my first Smash game and it still gets my hyped when I see that intro. Ultimate's is also good, though. Other than that... Most games I play don't have a start screen now that I think of it.
Monkey Island 2's opening credits do a really good job of setting the mood for the entire game. It's a fun bouncy pirate song, but there's an underlying sense of uneasiness that becomes more prevalent as you play.
Namco Museum DS is also top notch. Love the way all the characters interact with each other and the music is great! A medley of all the games' themes that transition from one to the next pretty seamlessly. Wish more compilations had something like that.
Sonic Mania's intro just makes me happy. It just does.
"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."
Ocarina Of Time - that intro still gets me today, I love it so much
TMNT Arcade (1989) - This intro was incredible, it had the freakin theme song from the TV show. Young me loved this so much, I would go to arcades and watch the intro when I didn't have quarters.
Star Voyager (NES) - I never beat this game, it was very hard... but I absolutely loved the opening theme song. Love it still, today. I'd post a video of it, but the sound wasn't working for me, and I don't want to post a bad link. Check it out if you are not familiar.
It's really hard to beat Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne's two title loops. Such awesome music, and an amazing sense of atmosphere. Really establishes the tone they're going for early on.
And who can forget about Silent Hill 1's catchy, dreamlike opening theme? Have never skipped this when booting the game up. Not once.
On the complete flip side, I want to rep Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete's gorgeous, cheesy, wonderful opening. Really transports me back to my childhood, and all of the great JRPGs I experienced on the PS1.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as it's not technically a title screen, but I remember loving the intro to Final Fantasy VIII. It might've been the best part of the game.
Recently finished: Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Splatoon 3: Side Order, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
Currently playing: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
What's next: ?
Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. Great intro video with epic music.
Super Metroid's opening chime gives dark, mysterious vibes that not many 16-bit games ever really pulled off.
ARMS opening theme gets me pumped. Freaking ridiculous and catchy.
3. Etrian Odyssey Untold. It arguably sets too high an expectation for the amount of story and cutscenes in the actual game, which is a gameplay-oriented (and rather overlong) dungeon crawler, but it's a cool intro with great music.
2. Donkey Kong Country. Love the absurdity of this one.
1. Xenoblade Chronicles. No action, just the sky slowly fading into night while the most beautiful music you've ever heard plays in the background.
... but as it's already featured in this thread, I guess that means I get another pick 😁
So, in chronological order:
One of the coolest game intros of all time,
surely:
In an age where so many games were transferred between friends in exchange for a blank floppy disk, this was the only legit purchase game we had for our Amiga A500. We got it on Christmas Day, and this intro was thus cemented into my brain:
And lastly, if I'm looking for a theme that epitomises the joy and excitement and crazy happiness of video games, there probably aren't many that go harder than this:
By some absolute travesty, this track doesn't play out in full when you load the game, but you get enough to give you the rush you're looking for before it loops the intro sequence for no good reason. Thankfully though you can listen to it properly via the game's Gallery. There's also a longer, fuller must-listen version available on YouTube for those that love it as much as I do, and a Japanese version of course. Just ****ing love it and can't get enough of it. "Hello, hello... just keep on rolling all the way...Hello, hello... and keep on smiling all the time" 😍 Gutted there's no animated video to accompany it.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
