Topic: Voice Acting- Do you think Nintendo made the right move?

I was wondering what you guys thought about Nintendo (and I guess other companies) using full/partial voice acting, if it was a good or bad idea. Also, would you like to see full voice acting in other series like Kirby, Mario, Metroid, etc.

In my opinion, I liked how they did it in BOTW and AOC and hope they continue it in the Zelda series. Also, I would like to see voice acting in the kirby or Mario series if it’s done right.

I think BOTW's voice acting would have been better if they would have gone all-in. I think it's kind of weird for them to only include voice acting in a few cutscenes, but then have just grunts and mumbles in others. I would have liked it if everything would have been voice acted, that way it wouldn't have been so jarring to me. I know that would have taken a lot more work, but I think it would be worth it.

I mean, we got full voice acting in Metroid with Other M and that was... an experiment for sure. I wouldn't be against it for future games, though. It would just need some different direction.

I take issue that the voice acting in Zelda was not done in Hylian!

@Snatcher Yeah it was definitely a matter of direction instead of actual voice talent. All of the voice actors who they cast are actually very talented, but I think a lot of the lines were rushed and they didn't do enough takes to really get the lines down.

My opinion tends to be good voice acting > no voice acting > mediocre voice acting > bad voice acting.

Also, I flat hate when games are inconsistent about voice acting. If a character is voiced in a scene, they should be voiced every time they talk, no exceptions.

I prefer minimal voice acting. BotW could have been fully voiced considering that the dialogue was fairly modest, but I was very happy with how it was handled, and the amount of voiced dialogue was just right. Voicing cinematic scenes in Pokémon Sword/Shield could have also gone a long way. It seemed so silly having an opening cinematic with characters merely miming the dialogue. But I absolutely prefer the odd grunts and moans as opposed to fully-voiced dialogue, particularly as fully-voiced dialogue can be quite underwhelming at best and irritating/cringe-inducing at worst, especially when there is no option to switch to the original Japanese dub.

@StarPoint : And therein lies my main issue with American dubs generally. It just seems like there is hardly any money (and care) put into them. Very, very underwhelming performances and they really can't disguise the fact that most of the takes are likely the first ones.

Digimon Adventure tri. was just shocking. The first movie seemed to have a lot of love put into it, and the actors seemed to be at the top of their game (the veteran cast anyway; the new actors were underwhelming), but even by the third of the six movies, which arguably demanded the BEST performances, had actually produced some shockingly poor/underwhelming performances, even by the veteran/returning cast, as it seems like they just ran with the first take, which was particularly frustrating as the film was filled with emotional scenes, and the dub failed to deliver, and made me cringe in moments that should have been moving. There were also moments where they added dialogue where there wasn't any in the Japanese, and I wish they would just shut up because it ruined the quiet, contemplative intent of those scenes.

While I prefer Japanese soundtracks anyway (and the acting there was top-notch) this was a rare case where I had also watched the English dubs as I grew up with the Saban/Fox Kids version and wanted to experience the films with the returning cast as well. While the US dub of the original TV series wasn't great, the casting was fantastic, and I loved the interpretations that the cast had brought to the show, so much so that the US dub was superior in that respect. I also think that the original 4Kids cast of Pokémon to be fantastic, but I didn't care for the occasionally stupid dialogue and culturally imperialistic embellishments.

Another problem with Digimon Adventure tri is that they kept recasting characters in between movies, and I had a bad feeling that would have happened from the get-go as the films were being released sporadically. I wish they had just waited for all six films to have been ready before dubbing them to maintain some consistency in the casting and more importantly, the performances, even if that meant that we would have had to wait a few years to release the first film in the series.

Kinda depends on the game. Eternal Darkness had fully voiced cutscenes then prose text during gameplay, and that worked really well. It was creepier getting a brief description over ambiant sounds than it would have been otherwise. Made the player feel isolated even in the presence of NPCs. But then Geist did basically the same thing, and it didn't work as well in an action game.

Voice acting in BOTW made me realise how difficult silent protagonists can be. Link not talking feels worse now, that's something I would like to see them experiment with.

But the quality so far has been good, I liked the voice acting in Metroid, sparse as it was.

I would prefer if they went all in, and voice acted every text box instead of just a couple cutscenes in Botw.

I also actually enjoy the voice acting in Super Mario Sunshine, so I wouldn't be opposed of them bringing VA back to Mario.

And Pokémon is a freaking anime, why don't the games have voice acting?!

I only really care about having voice acting in really text heavy games (like JRPGs or Visual Novels), so I'm glad they added full voice acting to Fire Emblem Echoes and Three Houses and hope the trend continues.

For the other games I don't really care either way. I didn't mind that earlier Zelda games had no voice acting but I also won't mind if they continue to add it for future games.
