I too didn't give much thought as to why people might like Kirby games until I played Power Paintbrush on the DS.

It's at the niche end of Nintendo franchises but once you're in, you're in.

@Zuljaras That makes perfect sense to me. I might be the same way minus the designs. I do enjoy a game with lore and let's be honest the lore is what keeps people hooked. I mean take Mario games for example not much lore. Bowser takes the princess you follow along going through leves and just to get to a showdown with Bowser. Also there's no real exploration with those types of games to add lore or store. Where as like Zelda or even Metroid you can just take the time and explore the world around you. With Mario its run to the right avoiding these obstacles and do it again a dozen more times. Its not like I can explore the worlds. Even the 3D Mario's are like that nothing really to explore except the main areas.

Dont get me.wrong I loved Mario growing up as a kid and there are older games I do enjoy like you but yeah now that I think about it its the lore and sense of exploration that I play video games.

Donkey Kong, Kirby, Splatoon and other kid friendly games (Rayman, Overcooked!, Mario Party) look astonishingly boring and I wonder how people choose to pay for those games.
Maybe I am just not into games devoid of cool lore and stories. Also the designs in those games are complete eyesore.

tbh I feel the same almost word for word regarding many 'adult' AAA high graphics type games. They just often seem unattractive and boring to me and without interesting lore and personality. There are exceptions obviously but when I'm watching an xbox direct or something, so many games like that look boring and samey.

Rayman is a really good example of how judging games on their looks is a bad idea, since I hated the look of the modern ("modern", the last one was 2013) Rayman games based on initial trailers. A lot of work to make a game that I did not think looked appealing at all. But then I played Origins and its awesome and Legends is still the best Wii U game ever and makes most of Nintendo's efforts on that console look so half-baked, and the look of the game grew on me because its obviously amazing.

I don't need a new 3D Mario game on Switch 2 anytime soon. I've been spoiled by replaying both Mario Galaxy games and Mario Odyssey. Nintendo can take their time.

I struggle to think where 3D Mario can go from here since the bar has been set very, very high. I don't just want Galaxy 3 or Odyssey 2, and I don't want 3D Mario to go open-world just for the sake of it. Would it be like Bowser's Fury, only without the constant threat of a giant Bowser bearing down on you? It's all just too unclear, so again, they can take their time to get it right. If it really is coming soon, great! But unlike many people crying about no 3D Mario as if it's the magic shot in the arm Switch 2 needs right now, I can wait.

I think considering the lineup of already announced 1st party games, 3rd party announcements are much more needed than 1st party announcements at this point in time. I’d like to see the next Direct be really bold and have “one more thing” be of the scale of KH4 instead of a 1st party heavy hitter.

The main thing I want to see for Switch 2 is a Sonic Frontiers update or Switch 2 edition. That will REALLY make me want one. It's strange, I know😅.

I also desperately want to see Layton and the New World of Steam again. That's #1 for the next direct.

@N00BiSH not an argument but an opinion. As you can see many people like those games so there is audience for them.

I am not that audience that is why I detest them

It is weird because as I pointed out there are kid friendly games I like but the vast majority are not. Maybe when I have kids things will change

@FishyS High realistic graphics are not needed for a good game but the mood and the atmosphere are important for me. There are not so many kid friendly games with atmosphere. The best way I can compare it is like Lego and Lego Duplo. One colorful for kids to throw around and the other is for adults

@Tasuki Yes, Mario is cool, I started with him when I was young but now I just play for like 10-15 minutes and that is it.

I miss the days Nintendo had a dedicated handheld that was cheaper than their TV consoles, and could actually fit in a pocket making them really portable.

Not to mention, the weaker hardware dedicated handhelds like GBA and the DS had led to different games and unique gaming experiences, or even different experiences compared to console versions. Always dug that GBA had a Jimmy Neutron metroidvania game because of it.

Unpopular because I know how many like the Switch and Switch 2. I just miss when handhelds were like this, even though I do like my Switch.

Anti-Matter

Switch 2 popularity was like Monkey See Monkey Do, not by Monkey Think Monkey Decide Yes or No.

PS5 deserve more love than Switch 2.
PS5 still have tons of 3rd party KIDS games to play.
It just some people are not open minded with other franchise or lesser popular games.

Smooth 60 fps is way more important for me than the locked 30 fps that adored too much by some of Nintendo gamers here because they don't care 60 fps. I do care with 60 fps because I want something better, not the excuse of downgraded performance.
Fun gameplay but terrible fps is not fun for me.

At this point, I choose PS5 with its stationary on TV than the portability from Switch 1 & 2 because portability doesn't look really satisfying aspect for me when the games got downgraded and especially Switch 2 with its game key card.
I would rather play the non portable version on my TV rather than following the over popular portable device that made me sick to see the unfairness situation from popularity.
I still like my Switch 1 for ACNH but I don't feel really hyped like 9 years ago, definitely not hyped with Switch 2 with all those controversial stuffs the game key card.

I wouldn't want to have to buy multiple Nintendo systems per gen but I do kind of agree that it is missed. I think more than that I miss when major game companies made smaller games at all. Like even on 3DS, even when it became successful, 3rd parties only occasionally had something to show for it because unique handheld games in series seemed to become increasingly uncommon, barring a few series that were defined by being handheld like Monster Hunter and Phoenix Wright (the latter of which had two games not localized until the Switch and two others as download only for no good reason).

Granted, I'm biased to having failed to have gotten into both Bravely Default and SMT IV, I did not have good luck with 3DS RPGs outside Dream Team tbh.

I get your point, though I do love my Switch Lite which does some of what you asked for. I plan to keep using it alongside my Switch 2 for a long time.

@kkslider5552000 Indeed, it's like having the weaker hardware led to some pretty creative games, or even versions of bigger console games, which lead to sometimes impressive results. I have a Need for Speed game for GBA, and it was a 3D racer on GBA, Sonic Advance gave us 2D Sonic games, while the console stuff was 3D, and so on. Even Zelda Four Swords was a fun use of GBA and its link cable, even though it did get a GameCube version IIRC.

@FishyS Sounds like a good plan, I always kept my older systems on hand after getting a newer one.

@Sunsy My point was more that as of right now there is a smaller cheaper portable-only Nintendo device with weaker hardware. You can buy it in the same stores you can buy Switch 2. If Nintendo decides not to discontue Switch Lite soon it technically hits all the things you were asking for.

@FishyS Oh ok, I get it. Though I was also thinking of the time when handheld games had special handheld only versions of games too.

Echoes of Wisdom is more a Zelda game then Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom ever will be. I know alot of people are blinded by BoW and TotK but to me they just dont feel like Zelda. To me they just feel more like Zelda mods for a game like Skyrim or any other open world game out there. They have no soul and are just bland boring games. They dont have direction really just defeat Ganon which you can do at any point. It might be harder to defeat him at the start of the game but you can. To me its like reading a book and just skipping to the last chapter and reading what happens. Theres no sense of the journey like say A Link to the Past or Echoes of Wisdom. Yeah there's stuff to do in BotW but it just seems like meaningless tasks, just busy work to give players something to do and in the end it doesnt matter if you do them or not.

I know this opinion is going to rub people the wrong way.

Doesn't rub me the wrong way. Even though I have played and beaten both Botw and TotK and love them both a lot, I do get where you're coming from with the sense of adventure being different and all that. I also gave Echoes of Wisdom a top score just like those two.

I suppose I'll share an unpopular opinion about the newer Zelda games too. I see on the internet all the time that people claim BotW is better. I think the opposite: TotK is better

Allow me to explain. It's mostly just one simple reason. TotK doesn't have any DLC, which means that more of the game content is on the physical cartridge. Yes, I did buy it digitally, but that was back during my mostly digital era back in the early 2020s before I started going physical again, and I intend on someday buying a physical copy for the game too. Meanwhile, for BotW, I was playing it physical, but only via my dad's copy. So I don't actually own that one, and most likely never will. Also, I don't care what people say, the Ultrahand is fricking cool. Even though I suck at using it 😅.

Is it mostly because of physical bias? Yes. But I do prefer TotK over Botw.

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
2: Pokémon Violet
3: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4: The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening (2019)
5: Animal Crossing New Horizons

I'll be honest whenever someone tries to say new or old Zelda is better, I feel a strong immediate reaction disagree. Just immediately contrarian to the most recent take I see.

Honestly they kinda exist to make each other look bad. There's so much more enjoyable, dynamic, moment to moment gameplay and openness that does make older Zeldas generally feel limited in ways that I'd never felt before...Skyward Sword at the earliest. But every time I remember how much, well designed, linear areas and level to progress in Zelda from this, aka the thing that makes...the majority of single player games enjoyable to play through, the idea that anyone wants this as a "replacement" for Zelda is insane.
