I have many issues with modern game trends and pricing issues, and I hate people trying to justify increased game prices with "they used to be more expensive" which falls apart if you pay attention to wages or the cost of almost anything except video games, even moreso because of the rise of monetization in games.
But the one thing I do feel is generally an improvement is that more often than not, when you buy a game, you don't need to buy it again. Actually worthwhile (important distinction, especially with how some companies operate) DLC is cheaper than a full re-release, and the same is often true for next gen releases and upgrades. The fact that a solid amount of games run better on Switch 2 for no cost at all, is awesome. It makes the Switch 2 seem cooler than it already is.
Imagine if every game with substantial DLC was Persona 5 Royal instead and every Switch 2 port of a Switch 1 game had zero upgrade path, including every single game that just naturally runs better for free.
@kkslider5552000 It's like how I actually tend to like Pokemon DLC over the third versions they used to offer. While you don't get the refinement of the base game that the third versions would bring- you at least don't have to replay the entire game again and buy it again for a second time just to get post-game content or additional features that didn't make it into the original release for whatever reason.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight If I still played Pokemon RPGs, DLC would've been something I would've at least considered, which never happened for 3rd versions, whose existence was always at least a slight disappointment for content I have to this day, even with easy access to emulation, have never played.
Actually because I've almost never replayed a Pokemon gen, I've never touched a 3rd version ever except Yellow, because Yellow was my first Pokemon game. The closest was playing an hour or two of a Crystal romhack once.
@VoidofLight@UpsideDownRowlet@kkslider5552000 Assuming you're buying every game at/around launch, and looking from purely a financial POV - yes, DLC absolutely beats buying the same game multiple times. Although specifically for Pokemon, I guess back in the day you could wait out the third version (probably a painful process), or do a trade-in/exchange of sorts. Plus the price of main game + DLC these days is pretty close to buying two Pokemon games back in the day. Not to mention that DLC by nature is typically more of an addition, whereas third versions were a revision, so there's definitely a lot of nuance to be had here.
An unpopular opinion that I believe I've expressed here before is that I don't think the Pokemon third versions are a strict upgrade. I think this more as I replay the games:
Red/Blue and Yellow are fundamentally quite different experiences due to the starter Pokemon, Pokemon availability and the trainers/gym leaders (incl. the levels of the latter).
Although Crystal provides some upgrades over Gold/Silver, I usually prefer to play the latter due to Pokemon availability (e.g. Mareep) - plus I don't really like Suicune as a substitute for the more iconic box art legendaries of Ho-oh and Lugia.
Perhaps minor to many, but I don't like how Emerald retains a lot of FRLG's restrictiveness when it comes to the regional dex, i.e. you're not allowed to trade in eggs or non-Emerald Pokemon until you get the National Dex, which is locked behind the E4.
Although I generally agree that Platinum are significant upgrades over Diamond/Pearl (and frankly, contain a lot of what should have been in the originals), I find DP to be better paced, and - although it's a small thing - I like that you can do gyms 3 and 4 in any order. This is the point where Pokemon games started to become more handholdy and linear (you can see it creeping into HGSS as well, as much as I love that game).
Edit: for Atlus, luckily I've not been around long enough to have bought all of their games multiple times (my first game was Persona 4 Golden), but I can imagine the frustrations. From the other side, it can be quite annoying having multiple versions of a game that have different positives and negatives and no clear "definitive" version (see Persona 3, and Atlus still didn't bring everything together in Reload). I think this is a model Atlus have relied on for a while - and tbh outside of the P3R DLC I don't really see them deviating from it anytime soon.
I've seen a ton of online complaints, on more than just NL, complaining about NOA's "customer appreciation sale" that is going on right now. And I don't really understand all of the complaining. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to complain, and I don't want NL to be a place full of nothing but toxic positivity. I also understand that not everyone is being negative about it, which is nice. I just don't understand all the complaining when Nintendo was nice enough to put seemingly every single one of their first party published Switch 1 games except the Pokémon ones on sale. Never once in the sale announcement did they promise to put anything involving the Switch 2 on sale.
As for me, seeing all of these different Nintendo published games on sale for a solid 30% off all at once is absolutely wild and really amazing to see, and I am happy that this sale exists in its current form. Heck, if I didn't have my issues with NOA right now and were still buying games digitally from them like I used to in the very early 2020s, I'd probably buy 2 or 3 digital Nintendo games in this sale.
I think this sale is outright confirming that Pokémon games will never go on sale digitally though 😂.
Again, it's not a really big deal, especially since I myself am happy. I just wanted to point something out that I personally don't understand.

@Nep-Nep-Freak For me its that nearly every other publisher will at some point do a much better sale than 30%. So I assume its annoying because Switch 2 games are some of the only Nintendo games new enough where 30% would be exciting at all on top of the lack of EVER doing a better sale.
Also the one game I'd have been halfway interested at 30% off (the Famicom Detective Club remakes) never does sales of any type, including now, for some unknown reason.
Also to an extent seeing how DMC V got a massive sales boost this year via much better deals than this, 7 years after its initial release while Nintendo never does this ever, even when fans are practically begging for it (Advance Wars).
I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but, the fact there's no easy way to just pause the game in Elden Ring, (and every other Fromsoft game I've played). Like guys, some times I get a phone call or have to go to the bathroom or something. Maybe just show the same common courtesy that nearly every other video game in existence offers it's players, just a thought. And btw, I'm not actually really angry about this, it's just a thing that kind of annoys me haha.
@OldManHermit While the game can't be easily paused, I know you're able to just stand safely in an area so long as you've killed the enemies or aren't in the direct path of them where you draw their attention. I do wish it were easier to just straight up pause the game though.
@Nep-Nep-Freak I'd imagine most of the complaints have to do with how this is specifically only a sale for Nintendo of America and not offered in other territories- mixed with how the discount isn't very big. I still like the sale for being able to purchase the Fire Emblem Engage DLC at a cheaper price (especially since sales like these barely happen with first party Nintendo titles), but I wish they'd discount the prices based upon the games individually rather than 30% off across the board.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@kkslider5552000 I'm with you. When they first announced the sale, the only games I was hoping for were the Famicom Detective Clubs. I don't understand why this is like the fifth time Emio has been on sale but the originals haven't even once. I'm not playing Emio until I play the first two, and I have too many other games to play to pay $60 for two decades-old games.
@OldManHermit As someone who loves Fromsoftware games I really wish I could pause them as well. I feel like I have to hide my character so they wont get assaulted if I step away.
Definitely an unpopular opinion but I think Shadow the Hedgehog 2005 is actually a pretty good game. The Doom and Lost Impact can seriously do one though.
@Xyphon22 I feel exactly the same way. Even ignoring the age of the games, Ace Attorney collections are right there as (using howlongtobeat anyway) much longer experiences for cheaper. Even Link's Awakening I waited to find for 40, despite being a remake of one of my favorite games.
Not only that but they didn't give it a physical release over here, so no chance for that. For some reason this exact game has been screwed over like nothing else Nintendo has done this previous gen (and that includes Advance Wars).
@Nep-Nep-Freak I have nothing against the sale itself, but the branding as tariff-related feels a bit dishonest. They raised prices on some things because of tariffs and then were refunded some tariff money because some courts decided some of the tariffs were illegal. From Nintendo's point of view, that is now free unexpected money. So they decided to put games on the exact same (or sometimes slightly worse) sales they typically do. Sure, usually only 20% of games are put on sale rather than all at once, but anyone patient can still wait for those sales since there are several a year. Again, nice sale, but fundamentally it feels like this is just a standard-ish sale to advertise Switch 1 backlog stuff in the Switch 2 era rather than some kind of special 'rebate'.
I feel the sale is a good idea and fair as they were refunded tariffs and there is no way to refund customers for that but they could have offered unique discount codes to those who paid more for stuff.
Going back to general pricing of games I have no problem with it. They have the right to charge what they like and we have the right to not buy it if its not a competitive price. I often wait to buy games because while its a game I want I'm not that bothered if there is a delay as I have a big backlog of games to play through. I want Fallout 4 on Switch 2 just to see how it plays and another reason to play the game through again. It's a lot of money today and I'm not prepared to pay that. I will wait for it until a big reduction and if there is no big reduction I won't buy it. I have fallout 4 on playstation, xbox and pc anyway. I mean here in the UK Fallout 4 is £1.50 from CEX for xbox consoles and it plays fantastically on the latest xbox and you have the option in the game for lots of different mods plus if you get lucky you might get a working code for fallout 3 included as it was a common to get the 360 version included as a digital download. It doesn't include the main DLC but you still get a lot more included on the xbox one version.
You can play a wide variety of community-created mods on the Xbox One version of Fallout 4, ranging from bug fixes and visual upgrades to new weapons, quests, and settlement items. [
Bug Fixes and Stability: The Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch fixes many base-game bugs. Optimization mods also help reduce lag or lower enemy density in heavy areas like downtown Boston.
Graphics and Weather: Performance-friendly texture packs like Vivid Fallout and weather overhauls like Natural & Atmospheric Commonwealth (NAC) or Vivid Weathers enhance the game's visuals and atmosphere.
Gameplay and Quality of Life: You can install mods that adjust inventory weights, unlock framerates (like 60 FPS patches), tweak survival difficulty, or add cheat rooms.
Settlement Building: Overhaul mods like USO (Ultimate Settlement Object) and Snap'n Build give you thousands of new building pieces and structural designs.
For the price of the game on Switch 2 you can actually buy a Xbox One console here in the UK and they play a selection of original xbox titles, a huge amount of 360 titles and of course all Xbox One titles. A lot of content for not a lot of money.
I just take the viewpoint that yes you can charge that but I ain't buying at that price. I don't get angry or annoyed but just don't buy those games. I will pay top dollar for games but those are exceptional games typically exclusives to that format. I'm not paying top dollar for a ok version of Fallout 4 likely with fairly high input lag unless you play in the barebones 60fps mode.
