Brothership kinda felt like the monkey paw curling in a way. Sure, we got the revival of Mario RPGs, but then we got a new entry that basically ignored majority of the feel and reason for why people loved Mario and Luigi in the first place- while a team tried to recreate that feeling without bringing back key members that they really should've brought back.

I feel like outsourcing to Acquire was a mistake, and Nintendo should've just worked together with ILCA or something.

I'll give Brothership this: for as much as it genuinely upset me in a way no other game I've ever played ever has(I don't say that lightly), I do have it to thank for giving me newfound appreciation for Paper Jam.

I won't try to gas it up like its God's Nectar or whatever - it's not up there with SS, BIS, or DT and the critiques in regards to how it underutilizes the crossover element and fell prey to the Mario sanitization at the time are certainly valid - but it sits nicely with Partners in Time as a solid M&L title even with its hiccups. It's still an AlphaDream-developed M&L at the end of the day so it's still tightly designed, solidly written, nice looking, nicer sounding, and FAR better paced than Brothership, making for a much more enjoyable experience overall. Paper Jam isn't a game I'll immediately go back and replay, but if I ever do, I certainly wouldn't mind a bit.

I actually like Final Fantasy XV and the core messages/themes of it's narrative. It isn't the best, and the game has a ton of issues that were down to the cut content from the base game, along with the engine itself- but the core bulk of the narrative that is there and the gaps that the DLC primarily fills makes for a pretty decent game.

I love how it contrasts against the themes of Final Fantasy XIII as well. XIII is a story about rejecting fate, whilst XV is a narrative about accepting and following your fate. The Gods in XIII are cruel towards humanity, while the Gods in XV are more kind towards them and genuinely seen as a force of good in that world. Even the color schemes match, with XIII being pure white while XV is black.

I know XV is pretty much a shell of what Nomura's vision for Versus XIII was going to be- but even then, it would've been a solid game if it were given the time it needed in development- rather than being released and left to flounder. If it were given an engine that was conductive to work with instead of just using Luminous Engine. If the devs didn't listen to everything the audience wanted, and just focused on creating a game instead of constantly worrying about the fan feedback before the product was even finished.

I also really hate the Dawn of the Future novel and the undoing of the game's core themes. I hate how it turns the main game's story (which harkened back to FF1 in some ways) into a narrative about defying fate. How Bahamut was made into a villain- when he isn't meant to be one in any of the other materials for the game. It felt like it was only a book written because people were upset about how the original ending was "too sad," and thus it destroyed all artistic intent the game actually effectively gave out.

With the issue of Switch 2 got banned because of using secondhanded cartridge from the dumped Switch 1 cartridge, I think I will considering Switch 1 OLED edition as my final upgrade.
It was straight violation of customer rights as we are get blamed for not knowing which is dumped cartridge.
Also, secondhanded games are still important because not anyone can buy in brand new condition with more expensive price.
And what is the point with Nintendo slogan to share the joy with other?
The more I heard about Switch 2, the more I felt disengaged.
Oh, well...
Just only Switch 1 and PS5 for the current gen games I care about.

Most people aren't going to be banned for buying a used game. This was a freak thing that happened because someone who dumped a copy did it in a way where the copy was dumped, and sadly someone who was innocent was caught in their stupidity. Most people who buy a used game will never go through this.

WHat most people aren't talking about when it comes to the "banned for used games" thing is that the guy got unbanned pretty quickly after contacting Nintendo. I'm not trying to defend Nintendo's practices here, but I doubt this will be a real issue, especially if they continue to be good about reversing it.

The entire "Nintendo can ban you for doing X" issue is one of those things where its both bad that Nintendo can do that but is also almost certainly very overstated how much that will have negative effects on anyone or anything worth being upset about.

This describes a lot of Nintendo controversies tbh. Like I hate Nintendo's recent pricing and I think its really short sighted for most other than their biggest games, but I just can't bring myself to think its some notable morally wrong thing. It just really sucks, is all.

That's the thing, Nintendo is doing stuff that isn't the greatest, but I'm getting tired of people turning it into this big catastrophe. Yes, Nintendo did raise game prices- and that genuinely sucks, but if it wasn't Nintendo, people would've eventually given this backlash to Microsoft or Sony- who were looking to raise game prices anyways.

It's either stuff like this- or issues where it's a freak circumstance that people are acting like is the golden rule. Either that, or something gets misrepresented and people consider said misrepresented thing to be the truth without reading or even digging further into what they're even talking about in the first place.

Thinking about it, it's probably a good thing that Pokemon doesn't have full voice acting in the games. Given Nintendo's low standards for casting and voice direction nowadays, I'd say we're dodging a bullet.

@N00BiSH Personally I thought I was the only person who didn't want Pokemon games to have voice acting. I hate how the anime handles character voices, and I wouldn't be able to stand it if the games had actual voice acting. Especially knowing gamefreak and their inability to make toggles for things.

Unpopular opinion.
I thought some of Nintendo fans are little minded, not open with other ideas from other games.
Disliking Nintendo 1st party characters for having voice acting because of the status quo or want to stay in comfort zone by keep them silent, no voice acting.
I personally tired with mindset like that.
I mean they will look way much better by having voice acting, some people like me who grew up by 3rd party games standard already get used with 3rd party standard that look better than 1st party Nintendo IP.

I would like to see new 3D Mario games with voice acting, FMV, gameplay design levels from the 2023 movie, more dramatic storyline, I will BUY that game.

I would like to see Animal Crossing turned into The Sims style which focusing on decorating aspect than yada yada aspect without penalty for not playing the game by one day.

Not a fan of Zelda franchise but I would like to see Link can talk and every characters talk just like watching Final Fantasy FMV.
Why so afraid to accept this change?
Link talking is way much better than silent Link.
Mario talking is way much better than his grunts only.
Animal Crossing less talking are way much better than yada yada old Animal Crossing.

I guess I'm totally opposite when looking at certain 1st party Nintendo games and comparing with 3rd party games standard.

@Anti-Matter why do you keep bringing up FMVs like they're this revolutionary technology? Full Motion Video isn't really new anymore - lots of games did them for their cutscenes to make up for the lack of fidelity to animate them within a game's engine - and even then, that's no longer a problem because technology's gotten so much better that most games don't need to rely on pre-rendered cutscenes anymore and can just animate them in the engine.

At this point the only reason companies like Square Enix use CG is for cutscenes that are so grand that they can't be done in-engine. Stuff like giant sweeping shots or actions that would be hard to animate in-engine. Outside of that though, majority of the games now don't really need massive pre-rendered scenes. The only game I can think that used them heavily in recent years was Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which makes sense given that Nintendo Switch was a few generations behind the rest of the consoles.

I've never wanted voice acting in Pokemon either. Admittedly the full cutscenes in Scarlet and Violet do look a bit odd without it, but I really don't need every text box read out loud.

@Dogorilla SV's approach to more realistic mouth movements when talking doesn't really feel odd to me, but I'm used to some older games that do this without voice acting as well.

I feel like another thing I want to mention is I hate the sentiment that every game needs voice acting now. A big part of the fun of older games was being able to narrate them yourself and give characters fun voices that you come up with. Snapcube's playthrough of Deltarune is evidence enough of the type of experience that hardly exists now- as so few games use just only text.

I'm also sceptical about VA in Pokemon, but mostly for the immersion factor. One of my issues w/ modern Pokemon is the general trend for it to feel less and less like your personal journey, or more and more like the story happens around you with little player agency (Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield are usually called out for being particularly egregious with it). It's already bad enough seeing a lifeless 3D model standing there while all the other characters carry the story - I just feel like VA in Pokemon will push things further in that direction.

Maybe this concern is unfounded. Some of my favourite games of all time (Persona 5, FE: Three Houses, and Zelda BotW/TotK) all have silent (or near silent) protagonists with the rest of the cast voiced, and it works well for them. But IDK my gut tells me it won't work in Pokemon.

Edit: actually - the more I think about it - if they can achieve something as good as the VA in Three Houses, I would totally be on board.

@VoidofLight I agree, I don't mind voice acting in cutscenes but when every line of text is voiced it just feels like overkill to me. Undertale and Deltarune's little bleeps that vary in pitch depending who's talking are good enough for me.

Nep-Nep-Freak

I wouldn't mind Pokémon games going forward having voice acting for important dialogue, and maybe the small voices that the ordinary people make in botw/totk when talking to them, as long as there is an option to turn it off for anyone who doesn't like it, like the talking flowers in Mario Wonder.

Edit: also, the option to have English words on the screen but Japanese voices would be cool, I think.

I do agree that not every game needs constant voice acting though.

This is example of Pokemon Violet have voice acting by the fans.
Right people choice = great performance.
Why so afraid to accept this standard?
I will have different idea about Pokemon Violet if have great voice acting like that.

@Dogorilla I second this. There's a charm to gibberish and text boxes that not even full voice acting can compete with.

I think a good example of this are the post-Gold WarioWare games. As nice as it was to hear Charles Martinet hamming it up as Wario in Gold/GiT, it's not the kind of series that inherently benefits from full voice acting. The shorter voice clips from the previous titles were fine because they were as short, punchy and satisfying as the microgames themselves and added to the flow of the gameplay loop as result. In Gold-onwards, the emphasis on additional, fully voiced dialogue ends up muddling the pace of the microgames more than they should. Get It Together was slightly better at this, but I feel the overall point still stands.
