I dunno if it's ignorant to dislike a company that is a plague on the entire games industry. If you upset consumers, and cause game makers to lose money, then you're a pretty bad company.
I can understand some people not liking the company based on bad experiences, but how do they negatively affect the gaming industry as a whole?

Used game sales. Forcing discounting on new game releases. Both = bad for game maker's revenue.
Just don't understand all the hate, never had a bad experience. And I don't hate them for selling used games, other retailers do it and you'll find that with any product.
The customer there sounds like me remembering the good ole' days when my local GameStop was Babbage's; as I'm pestered about selling my used games, power up rewards, strategy guides, etc.; when all I want to do is get a game. I've told the same guys repeatedly that I don't trade in games. I just still use them because I like the comfort of reserving games, and it's preferable to doing business with Wal-Mart (which is an even more malignant cancer than GS in every way imaginable, IMO).
As for the actual topic, my Tron arcade game was irreparably damaged following a move. Didn't PHYSICALLY lose it, but it was lost nevertheless, and it was painful. Now have it on XBLA, but it's not close to the same (and the controls don't touch the arcade game's).

Wow didnt mean to start a debate here. For me the reason I dont like them is the fact that they had a game that was stolen from me and when I provided the proof they just blew me off like I was trying to scam them. I am sure that I am not the only one that has happened too either. I heard of people stealing brand new games from places like Target and Walmart for example and than running off to Gamestop and trading it in. I mean come on. If I were to steal a car and take it to a dealership to trade it in I would be laughed at and arrested. Gamestop does nothing to stop the theft they just take the disc and slap it into one of their generic Gamestop boxes. Thats my main beef with them.

I'll admit I don't know the effects of forced discounts on new releases, but I have to disagree on used games being bad.
Personally, I bought FFX used (which I assume you'd count as a $50 loss for SE), but BECAUSE of that used purchase, I bought FFI&II: Dawn of Souls, FFIV Advance, FFXII, and FF Crystal Chronicles: the Crystal Bearers new. I'd find it hard to believe that that used purchase did more damage, than all those new purchases (inspired by the used one) did good.
In my case, the same thing can be said about how I got into the KH & Ace Combat games. I'd also like to think that's true for most whom have ever bought used. The few used purchases trigger many new purchases, helping devs in the long run.
Also, there are used markets for pretty much everything, like music, movies, clothing, cars, ect., and all of those businesses have been trucking on for years. How would the games industry be particularly different?

That just means that there are a lot of parasites out there. Not that they're not parasites.
And just like a parasite, you can learn to live with it. It's just uncomfortable.
Last Thursday when I lost Mario Kart 7, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive: Dimensions at the train station.
There goes nearly 300 hours of work.
I don't think I've ever lost a game myself, although once I lent my friend my copy of Golden Sun and never saw it again - he also misplaced my Grandia II around the same time, although he at least bought me a replacement copy for that one. What was worse was having a different "friend" of mine steal my Game Boy Color, Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Blue right from under my nose one night. Ugh.

You know what's funny? Someone stole my backpack and left it open somewhere on the floor at high school once...my DS was in there. Found out my phone was stolen (that thing was crappy too, lol), my DS was just sitting there untouched. xD
I kinda figured they would go for the DS, but whatever, take the crappy phone instead.
