The more people hate on Velma the more I can't help but think it's brilliant. I couldn’t stomach the show myself as it’s a try hard but the way it's playing the smart marks is uber tier trolling. lol

"I hate Velma as it’s offensive and controversial"

"Aren’t those irreverent sweary adult cartoons meant to be not taken seriously as they intend to be offensive"

"But no, it's making fun of everyone"

"You mean like South Park does"

"No, it's making fun of their own fans"

"You mean like Rick & Morty does"

"But no one cares or watches it"

"Hasn't all the people become emotionally invested into hate watching Velma turned it into ratings hit and people complaining about it keeps it trending on the social media webs like other must see tv which has now powered into pop culture relevance more than another so-so Scooby Doo show would have"

"But I hate it!"

@WoomyNNYes I'm still in two minds myself. Russell did a great job making modern Who but towards the end of his run was just phoning it in and I honestly found it creepy how every companion was treated badly because they weren’t Billie Piper but still a change of writer and a change of Doctor is always a good injection of energy so I'll be watching.

I dunno why everyone is getting so het up about a adult piss-take of a kids cartoon. It's not like they've killed your firstborn.

@Rambler They are saving that for season 2, they have got to keep people talking.

I think Velma makes for a great social experiment. The sweary adult cartoon has lost it's power to offend people nowadays like South Park wish it could still get this kinda heat but this has properly engaged people with their hate of it. It's like the next step in evolution of when people who use to watch Room to make fun of it for being bad.

I get hate watching. I went out with someone who loved True Blood and it slowly turned into me shouting the characters are fools, that plot twist doesn't make sense, why did all of that get introduced if it didn't even matter etc as that's half the fun. However that seemed more a design choice to be a thrashy soap people watch for the trashiness which I suppose is how Velma how has caught on yet Velma is obviously not to be taken seriously but has pulled everyone and taken it very seriously rather than moving on and stopped watching it.

If no one minds me interrupting the Velma talk...

Right now I'm rewatching Kid Cosmic, the most recent show from Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken. It's one of the best serialized cartoons ever, and probably the only show to actually make me tear up a little.

@Kermit1 As in ye olde Doctor Who?

I mess about with pfp backgrounds way too much, sorry.

WoomyNNYes

@TeaCatherine @Kermit1 For outside the UK, I'm assuming Disney+, with their large budget, will have all Doctor Who since the 2005 reboot. I guess we'll see. (edit, actually, I thought I recalled it will be exclusive to disney plus starting in late 2023. (The doctor will remain with the BBC in the UK))

@WoomyNNYes Oh, I'm in the UK, I just wondered if @Kermit1 meant post reboot or classic by "legacy"?

@TeaCatherine On the previous page, we were talking about the new upcoming Doctor Who season, and the three specials in November 2023.

@WoomyNNYes Oh yeah, I knew that, it just seemed to me like he might have meant the old ones, guess I was wrong.

@TeaCatherine @WoomyNNYes I meant as in "Reboot era" and maybe more. In other words old.

@Kermit1 So, we were both right then. You watched any before?

Kermit1

@TeaCatherine I've watched bits and pieces and read about the long history of the series. It's really hard to be a Doctor Who fan in Canada lol, the show is not on any platforms and the DVDs are hard to find and very pricy.

I like David Tennant the most.

@Kermit1 Yeah, it suck when things have that problem. I liked pretty much all the reboot ones up until Jodie Whittaker, although I'm pretty sure that was 'cause they changed the writer to someone who didn't seem to be very good.

@TeaCatherine ya... she sucked tbh... The new Doctor (not Tennant) seems cool.

Matt Smith was the best Doctor, FIGHT ME!

@Kermit1 I found Jodie Whitaker to be great though, she was full of charm and energy needed to be a Doctor and she also made a nice counter following Peter Capaldi's grump. If you watch Adult Life Skills a film she did before becoming The Doctor you can see she was really perfect casting.

The problem was they went from Steve Moffat as the head writer (the guy behind Sherlock) who brought so many great ideas to the show to the guy who did the Who spin off Torchwood yet was running out of ideas then but they didn’t want someone from outside so you could feel the lack of freshness of energy behind the show. That’s why I’m in two minds about Davis returning, he’s a great writer still as his recent show It's A Sin proves but Who is show always needing an injection of ideas and energy to the writing. Plus I’m being cautious from having Americans involved in it now, I can see it being like Black Mirror a very British show that once Americans got involved a lot of it was suddenly set in America despite it being a show built on British snarky cynicism.

@TeaCatherine The new guy is Ncuti Gatwa who seems cool. He done a lot of serious theatre acting but I’ve watched him in Sex Education and he’s got the chops and the energy to be a Doctor. Although out of everyone from that show to become a Doctor I would have suspected it would be the weird girl who writes alien erotica instead of him.
