I've thought about this question before: if you were going to tell someone about the history of video games, what games would need to be mentioned? Which games are so important that they marked a change or landmark in the history of gaming?

Off the top of my head, I would say Pac Man, Galaxian, and Pong. What else could be called one of the most important games of all time?

the original Zelda and Metroid were pretty inventive as well. Pong and Super Mario Bros are musts. Ocarina of Time as well (how well it's aged is debatable, but it invented the modern adventure game).

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Now that I think of it GoldenEye on the N64 for FPS and of course Ultima Online, Everquest and World of Warcraft for the MMORPG.

Perfection. This is pure proof that video games can be serious with its storytelling.

In a way, E.T. can be considered very important; it's the first colossal failure of the video game industry. While the game is probably terrible (cannot attest, have not played), the fact that it's terrible may just be why it's important. Also, sinking +$20 million dollars into the license alone was a stupid decision.

Goldeneye did nothing for FPSes.

From a mechanical or innovative perspective, no, Goldeneye didn't do much anything. However, from its sales it showed that first person shooters were viable investments on video game consoles, something that had been previously thought to be a pointless endeavor.

EDIT: I also feel this is relevant;

From what I read, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time was pretty important for 3D adventure games as it introduced various features that are still being used by modern developers.

Virtua Fighter. I personally haven't played any of the games in the series, but it successfully moved fighters into the polygonal era.

Also, it was because of VF that DOA exists (that's why VF is being honored in DOA5), so I have to thank it for that
