@Mariotag Huh, looks like the dub did change some things up a bit. I don’t really come across anime dubs that significantly change the source material up a bunch, but I think I have heard of some shows that are notable for that. I can’t remember which though.

Yeah, even when I clean the sticks off they still drift, so I don’t think that’s what’ll truly get rid of the drift. Need to be careful with the controllers.

I never watched the earlier movies, only the ones that came later in the series. I’m not super into superhero movies besides maybe the Spiderverse movies. I wouldn’t call myself a Marvel fan, but I just see some of the movies on occasion and enjoy them. I think I have heard of that Waluigi Avengers thing, it was popular when I saw it pop up on my recommended feed a few times years ago, and the premise sounds hilarious.

I really like Yo-kai Watch despite only having played the first two games and watched the first season of the anime and the first film. But I don’t know what the other four movies are about. I know when they were going to localize Yo-kai Watch 4, they wanted to localize the 4th and 5th movies and one of the other series because of plot points and characters in 4 but they never released the game and the movies in English and at this point they never will. I don’t have any shows or movies I’ve been watching recently, but I plan on watching a Chip ‘n’ Dale show on Disney+ today, but there’s a few shows on CR I started but haven’t finished.

Yeah, she doesn’t really have any kitsune abilities besides her ultimate and some parts of her design being themed around kitsune, namely the red headband she wears, but her having more fantastical and mythological abilities compared to the others makes me enjoy her character a ton since the other heroes in OW tend to wield ordinary weapons. And I checked, and the definition I found for it was “mythological fox spirit,” so it’s a term for a kitsune.

That’s interesting, I do recall that they mentioned they focused more on Virtual Console than Nintendo and gaming as a whole before rebranding to NL. It sounds like some of the OG staff left, but it’s so cool one of them was a Sega fan and actually got to work for them! That sounds like a dream come true. It seems like NL did change a lot over the years besides the name rebrand and the articles focusing on other games.

Sometimes I wish I could predict or see what would happen with the actions I plan on taking, because it seems so uncertain what effect my actions will have afterward and it makes me worry about whether what I’m doing will help or not.

There’s a rhythm game I play and I begin to act like a perfectionist when I can’t full combo a song, because a lot of the songs I played through almost flawlessly and I can handle higher difficulty songs, but I have began to act less like that and just more bummed out when I can’t get it right since the game rewards you with in-game items if you get a combo streak going on.

That must have been a mess. Sometimes seeing how things are falling apart in the current moment, you can pretty much tell it’s super bad and will implode upon itself eventually. So it seems like some people were accusing each other of making each other look bad or some actually did it? It seems like there was some misinformation and accusations involved that caused some of the users to get upset at each other, which is unfortunate. It’s good you and everyone else pointed out how bad the forum was managed and the toxic behavior it fostered, because some don’t realize how toxic some online communities can be until later on, and I’m sorry about how everyone else got mad at you and the others. The forum owner just really got angry he got called out and seemed to do that just to make himself look good and the people criticizing him look bad.

I wish just one good thing could change every negative thing. Sometimes it feels rare when that happens, usually one day something good happens and it goes back to the status quo, but lately I’ve been having more positive days. But yes, it feels like that pop culture and media are the only ways to feel happy, especially when you’re having a rough day or week and find it’s hard to be happy.

Hey everyone! I wrote a short story for a competition, and just wanted to share it with y'all cause I'd love your feedback! It was a very new style of writing for me: I usually have an upbeat main character and write in a formal 3rd-person limited or omniscient, so for this one I stretched myself and tried a casual 1st-person limited. Let me know what you think! ☺️☺️☺️

@Pastellioli Well, anime back then, especially stuff meant for younger audiences, absolutely got modifications. I dunno if I can even state here what the original thing was for that one episode. Other notable examples include the original DBZ dub. Hell was not referred to by name, episodes were merged, and they cut out references to death, as well as "Mr. Satan", for the latter of which they apparently actually created an entirely new name for the character. (His original first name was apparently Mark or something.)

Yeah. Drift is gonna hopefully be less of a problem coming up.

Yea. I never got too into Marvel either. Mostly just Spider-Man. Not into comic heroes in general for the most part. And Waluigi Avengers was great, not because it was funny, but because it seemed to actually be taken somewhat seriously. I'm still waiting on another episode of Endgame...

I never got into Yo-kai Watch tbh. But it does suck when things just don't happen.

Ah neat! Another reason to like the character then! And yeah. Been wondering if a youko essentially is what I thought it was or not. Good to have confirmation.

Yeah. NL has changed a lot since then! It is weird seeing some reactions though. Among my friends, some say not to trust reviews from NL these days. I forget the basis though.

Yeah. It'd be nice to have some idea of if my action would cause problems or not. It'd help.

Oof. Yeah. With rhythm games at least, I'm not that consumed.

Well, the forum was very much the mess I said it was. Only like, 3 or 4 ppl on at night, which ended up become daytime ppl seeing nighttime activity as drama, and vice-versa. I was a lot less mature regarding online interactions back then, but was also too bold for my own good. It was only a few ppl calling out the owner and forum then. I feel like a lot of my habits formed from back then, or evolved from then, in rather negative ways. Still need to get past that.

It'd be nice if good things overturned negative things. Unfortunately, many people are not willing to talk about the things you do that may be wrong, or work things out otherwise. And positive does not overturn negative. I do feel as though I need to escape a lot of things these days, but an escape can only do so much.

@Mariotag I think earlier anime’s from the 90s-00s went through a lot of localization changes, one notable example being Japanese namers changed to American names and cutting out Japanese food and replacing it with American food, and if the anime was for children, there would absolutely be a ton of changes done to it. It reminds me, I never watched One Piece, but I saw a video on its 4kids dub, and although it isn’t a mature anime, I saw it has questionable and sometimes violent content, and 4kids snagged the rights to dub it first from a packaged deal with other shows in it. Since they were aimed towards kids and families and One Piece didn’t fit their demographic, they had to edit episodes a ton, threw in a bunch of cheesy jokes for laughs and sometimes outright cutting episodes and even characters…which didn’t work from the footage I saw. People who watch and read One Piece said some of the changes they made to the episodes would’ve made plot holes with the story, but I read they didn’t get far into dubbing the show’s many episodes. Just shows that trying to turn an anime for older audiences to a kids show is difficult and almost never works.

I still think Marvel is cool but I’m also not into it besides the Spiderverse movies and Marvel Rivals. I’m not hyped or excited about superhero comics or movies but not saying they’re bad, but my interest is more in fantasy and fantastical characters, animals (especially if their anthropomorphic and rodents) and creatures.

I loved Yo-kai Watch a ton, but it failed in the West from long localization times, yokai and Japanese mythology being super unpopular in America, and accusations that it was a Pokémon ripoff. Because it failed in the West so quickly after the first game, they never localized the many spin-offs, animes and the 4th game, which bugs me since it’s the only mainline game that never got an English release.

Her being more fantastical is another reason why I liked her a ton. It makes her stand out from the rest since she doesn’t use guns and her design is more traditional. Her moveset with her throwing knives and healing ofuda is fun too.

Some people say not to trust NL reviews? I find their reviews are unbiased and well-done, and I think people don’t always have to agree with every review or opinions others have. NL is a nice video game site, and I find that it and its sister sites are managed and moderated better than the other video game sites out there. I am definitely curious about the other changes NL had throughout the 2010s besides the name change and them expanding to covering other games, since I found out about NL in 2020.

Rhythm games are fun but sometimes stress-inducing, since you can mess up at any moment and your eyes need to be glued to the screen at all times. It’s sucks when I get a full combo just to mess it up near the end, either by pressing at the wrong time or not registering my taps.

I see, so only a few people were up at night and daytime users assumed the few people online at night stayed up for other reasons to stir up drama. I wonder why the daytime users came to that conclusion, or if there’s a stigma that staying up late gives off that they believed was true. So only a few people actually knew how bad the forum was and how toxic the forum owner acted? Unfortunate because it sounded like a huge mess and everyone else wasn’t aware of it or played into the toxicity and fostered it.

I feel like the world is far too negative, and it makes it hard for me to find positivity, and it sometimes feels like positivity is constantly outnumbered by negativity, especially with how some of my days go, but what also contributes to it is sometimes seeing news document the awful stuff that happens worldwide, not to mention some people in the world aren’t always kind and positive toward you. I like using media as an escapism since I stop thinking about bad things and even imagine being the characters in what I play/watch or living in their world. They usually are depicted as being happier, and it makes me wish I could be happier like them too, but it’s sometimes hard for me to feel that way.

@Pastellioli Huh. Yeah, 4kids was infamous for that kind of censorship. Though I never had much to compare Pokemon to.

Anthropomorphic or rodents? I can understand the first at least. I'm sorta into Batman at least.

I dunno the localization times. And did not know Japanese mythology, including yokai, was unpopular here. A little weird to think of, seeing as I really enjoy it.

Does she have multiple movesets? I can see where she'd stand out.

Yeah. Some people do say negative things about the reviews NL does. I'd have to ask for a reminder why though. Having said that, better than IGN, David Jaffe, etc.. I forget a bunch of the changes tbh. It has been a while.

I'm not overly good at rhythm games. I got into some though. Donkey Konga, DDR Mario Mix, maybe one or two others.

It's not even that they assumed the nighttime ppl were up to cause drama. More a situation of extra stuff to read through = drama. And yeah, mostly teenagers there. Or people who might fit in. It was a forum created because miiverse was allowing fewer comments per day. I'm wondering how much better I'd do socially if not for that forum.

The world is very much far too negative. I'm constantly hearing from ppl the news today, basically just being ppl hating on each other for insert reason here. One take after another. And yeah. Lately, I've felt a need to ask ppl if I'm toxic myself, partly cause of my habits, and issues. I don't even look to media as living in the world of those characters. Just getting lost in the media is nice.

@Pastellioli Thanks! This is the icon I'm using for my Switch profile, which is Mario hanging out in Western Land. I like how it turned out, honestly. Western Land is one of my favorite boards in the Mario Party series, too.

It's been years since I last saw Rescue Rangers. Perhaps I'll see it on Disney+ for old time's sake, haha. Goof Troop was another show from my childhood. More recently, I've watched the classic Mickey Mouse cartoons on Disney+. They're so fun to watch and I even have a couple volumes of them on blu-ray. I saw a Donald Duck cartoon that had Chip and Dale, too.

I remember the other Mario costumes too, as well as the Splatoon ones. I got the Splatoon costumes last year before the Wii U's online shut down. The Mario ones I got from various amiibo figures.

I ended up getting New Horizons digitally as well. Can't say I'm surprised the physical copies kept selling out, lol. Definitely excited to see what the next Animal Crossing will be like. And yeah, those box levels really tested me too.

That sounds like a good guess. I also remember seeing that Grabbed by the Ghoulies was originally gonna be a GameCube game. As for that game that Capcom was trying to work on, it seems like it was an original horror game. There's actually an interview with the Mega Man Battle Network devs right here where they talk about it.

@MarioVillager92 I really like how much more customizable the Switch profiles have gotten. Mixing up design elements is so fun! Mine on there is a DKC render, but one I liked using a lot was a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe icon of Golden Mario driving a kart.

I actually first saw Rescue Rangers for the first time almost 3 years ago. I binge-watched the show after seeing the Disney+ movie and enjoying it. I have been watching Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life and watching older shorts with Chip ‘n’ Dale, so I should probably rewatch Rescue Rangers when I finish Park Life. I find classic cartoons have so much charm with their characters and animation and the slapstick is especially fun. I remember also watching Goof Troop at one point, but I never finished it, but I think I remember enjoying the episodes I saw. Actually, there are a ton of cartoons with Donald Duck and Chip ‘n’ Dale in them. I binge-watched those on Disney+, but from what I see there’s a few more shorts that are missing on there. That’s cool you own them on disc. I never actually owned Blu-Ray discs with the shows or shorts on them! I only had discs for movies.

I think I got a lot of the costumes from using amiibos, but I remember getting some of them from events since a few of the costumes didn’t have amiibos. The non-amiibo costumes I remember the most were Babymetal, Shaun the Sheep, Felyne, Totem Link, the Arcade Bunny, this girl from a manga called Nisekoi and an anime girl with turquoise hair.

Yeah, the game was so popular when it came out, but I didn’t expect copies to be sold out everywhere in stores! Physical game releases were way more popular 5-6 years ago compared to now unfortunately. I remember when New Horizons was so popular and everyone was talking about it, but I’m surprised they stopped updating it a year later since it became one of the Switch’s best-selling games. I wonder how the next game will be like, but I definitely think it’ll bring a lot of popular features from New Horizons back.

Oh yeah, I remember a couple of Rare’s Xbox games were originally GameCube titles. Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were also a few of them, as was a couple of their cancelled games before Microsoft bought them and they became an Xbox-exclusive developer. I see, so it wasn’t going to be a Resident Evil game and an original project altogether! That’s interesting to know, and thank you for linking the interview! I’ll give it a read soon.

@Mariotag I think their dub of Pokémon is iconic, but it seems like a ton of their other dubs weren’t as good or were edited badly.

Well, characters that are both anthropomorphic and rodents! Should have clarified that. Conker is what made me like anthropomorphic squirrels a lot, but I also enjoy chipmunks too. That’s cool! I’m not into Batman or DC a lot but those are good picks too.

Yeah, I was also surprised upon finding out Japanese mythology isn’t as well known in America compared to Greek and Norse. Though, I think Japanese mythology is probably more well known with adults more than children, and since the latter was Yo-Kai Watch’s main audience, it failed significantly in the US. Also a shame Japanese mythology isn’t as popular here since I also find its stories, creatures and myths interesting, and Yo-kai Watch is a very fun concept and take on traditional myths.

Only one, should have fixed the wording when I said that…I just find her moveset very unique, and it’s why whenever I played as a healer I usually chose her, plus her throwing knives can deal a good amount of damage and the cleansing bell she uses to remove negative effects is really helpful since she can use it on herself and her teammates depending on where she throws it.

I would take NL’s reviews over some YT reviews and ones on other sites like IGN or Kotaku. But, I especially wouldn’t use Kotaku, also because I remember one of their staff members went on a questionable rant when they didn’t get a review copy for Tears of the Kingdom from Nintendo, when I’m sure they endorsed pirating Metroid Dread one time, which is a HUGE no-no. I feel like NL’s are more reputable and helpful compared to most game reviewing sites nowadays, but usually I don’t rely on reviews for some games I’m gonna play or stuff I’ll watch, I just play/watch and then form my opinions afterward.

I’m only good at mobile rhythm games where I tap or flick the screen. I’m the worst at ones where I play with a controller. Tried a rhythm games on Game Pass once and I couldn’t get used to the controls on the button, and the funny thing is, I unlocked an achievement for failing a song, though I realized after that console rhythm games aren’t my thing.

Oh, so it was more stuff they had to read. Gotcha. I didn’t know it was created because of Miiverse. I actually never really used Miiverse besides a few times when I made Splatoon posts, and I never commented on posts. They actually had a limit for how many comments you could leave per day? I didn’t know that. I assumed it was like other social media networks where there are no limits on what you post or comment.

It’s awful, sometimes I curiously go and see news headlines on forums but only scroll down to read comments and reactions, but I don’t realize how negative they are and how they can be effecting my mood, so that’s something I need to stop. I am bad at realizing what I actually say or act, and I also tend to ask people how I’m doing so they can help me realize if what I’m doing or acting is right or wrong. I’m pretty bad at being aware of how I feel and act as well as the stuff around me. Well, I only feel like being in the worlds of the media I play/watch if I’m feeling super down, or if the worlds look friendly or happy. I often get lost in what I watch and it makes me feel happy. Been watching a lot of older Disney cartoons and getting lost in them is so fun, especially since they are so slapstick-y and have fun stuff happening in them, not to mention the characters are charming.

@Pastellioli Yeah. Though even the Pokemon dub had some edits apparently. I rather miss the 4kids version. When it was handed over to TPC, they didn't just replace the voices. They also moved it to a premium only channel, and replaced the soundtrack with a stock soundtrack. Another dub ppl liked from them was Yugioh. Probably because Kaiba.

Ah. Fair enough. Was thinking, your fave Pokemon would probably be Pikachu then.

Ah. I see what you're saying. Unfortunate in regards to Yo-Kai Watch to be sure. I've seen some of other mythologies, yeah. Japanese culture, unfortunately, does not translate exceedingly well to western standards. Notably characters like Fire Emblem's Nowi and the like, if you can guess the term.

Heh. Sounds like Kiriko is a good all around character.

Noted about Kotaku. Btw, I mentioned David Jaffe, you mentioned Metroid Dread. You should uh, look them up together. Gave me a good laugh for sure. IGN, there ain't enough water to sustain my laughter with that one!

Ah. The ones I really enjoyed had specialized controllers. Dance pad, DK Bongos. I'm not too into using a normal controller for a rhythm game. Tried it with Kingdom Hearts. Minigame, and a full one.

Miiverse was an experience in many layers. On the surface, you had ppl helping each other out with games. Beneath that, you had the art. Which was quite incredible btw. Beyond that, you had chatrooms and general interactions that bordered on toxicity. Below that, trolling with full on toxicity. The moderation system had a global version, and a version for Japan. Global, if you said anything that offended anyone in any culture, you were eligible for a strike. Japan, apparently nothing short of death threats would get you one. And of course, they changed how it worked mid-2015, adding a comment limit.

Heh. I don't look at many headlines outside gaming and anime. Actual normal news would be a downer. It's enough that I have to hear about politics everywhere else... I have a similar uncertainty. Driven by anxiety, and compelled to act, I ask ppl if I did wrong as well. Most recently, I've wondered if I'm outright toxic. Honestly, even a dark world in media can be worth something. I saw a video a while back on a certain scene from Re:Zero, and how average ppl might relate to it. (Something from the first part of season 3)

Mariotag

Pastellioli

@Mariotag I remember 4kids the most from their Pokémon dub, and I think that and an episode or two of Sonic X were the only dubs I watched from them. Didn’t know about the late history of the dub or soundtrack changes.

Maybe! I know Pikachu is an electrical mouse but it was cool to know itsvalso based on a squirrel too. I know there are some Pokémon that look more like squirrels though. I remember this one that was white and light blue but I genuinely forgot its name. And wasn’t there a flying squirrel Pokémon?

It made me disappointed Yo-kai Watch got dropped in the West after a few years because Japanese myths are kinda unknown and unpopular in the West, but some yokai in there having human-like and sometimes intentionally unappealing designs instead of animal-inspired designs like Pokémon is why, since the cute and cool looks of the animals play a role in their games’ popularity. I researched Japanese folklore for a story I ultimately didn’t write (since I thought I wouldn’t have the skills to pull it off) and I especially liked the myths on the animal yokai, like the kitsune, komainu, and nekomata.

Yes, she’s fun to play as and the one that appeals to me the most in OW. Should’ve mentioned her knives are stronger when you’re aiming for headshots though.

Yeah, you can look up the Tears of the Kingdom thing with Kotaku. That rant one staff member went on just because they didn’t get a copy was terrible, but I think Kotaku has been disliked for years now; I remember they claimed a Persona song in Smash Ultimate had an inappropriate lyric when it never did in the first place, but the claim they made sounded bizarre to begin with. I vaguely remember the Metroid Dread thing with Jaffe and the criticism that got…I think I was following Metroid Dread news at the time, but I haven’t played it.

Specialized controllers for rhythm games sound cool but I’ve never used them. I think Taiko no Tatsujin has one where it’s a taiko drum you bang on with two sticks and it’s connected to the game. Using ordinary controllers is hard for me to get used to, so I don’t like playing rhythm games on console.

I remember the Miiverse art the most. Saw some awesome stuff, I think I posted art 1-2 times but my skills weren’t good back then haha. Miiverse had chatrooms? I don’t actually remember that at all, but I do believe it had people trolling and stuff since I sometimes get recommended reels on Instagram that compile various Miiverse posts. The posts were often lighthearted and comedic ones that got a laugh out of me but it also had some people saying out of pocket stuff. People who used Miiverse a ton said the out of pocket posts were limited and hard to find though, so I’d assume the moderation and comment limitations helped quite a lot. It’s good it had moderation, because it seems like for some social media networks moderation is now nonexistent.

I sometimes look at anime headlines, but the ones on actual news are not fun to look at. I usually don’t read the news or watch it though. Yeah, I am like that too, I just am too unaware of the effects of what I do, I sometimes choose to act in dumb ways without thinking about it, but I also do it because I think it’s right when it’s not.

I have played and watched media with darker worlds. One random example of one I liked was Arcane. Those are nice too, and that one especially had awesome writing and characters, though I’m more into bright-looking and happier worlds.

@Pastellioli Yeah. And I didn't find the Sonic X dub to be as good as Pokemon for sure. Though I did appreciate that Eggman was taken more seriously than in the Japanese version. Yugioh was like, how much tension can you put into a card game? Featuring Seto Kaiba.

I didn't know Pikachu was supposed to resemble a squirrel too? Also, yeah. Pachirisu, and Emolga respectively.

Yeah, the designs definitely matter. And I'm curious regarding nekomata, it's implied in Fire Emblem Heroes, by a Halloween Sakura, that nekomata can bring back the dead?

Of course. Headshots are a thing to get used to. Used to play Halo a bunch.

Yeahh. Dunno Kotaku that well. The David Jaffe thing though... Dude pioneered multiple franchises, as a professional, proceeds to get stuck on a tutorial room in Dread live, and when he figures it out, he says bad game design. When he was criticized, he basically pulled a Hideki Kamiya before Kamiya did it himself. Just amazing.

Eh. The specialized controllers are neat tbh.

Miiverse art was amazing. It's impressive also how artists would ask ideas there and deliver, while current culture has them charge you about as much as a full videogame for a single piece. A lot of the Miiverse stuff was hidden beneath the surface. That's why I mentioned layers. And some of it did go too far. Dunno if I saw the out of pocket stuff. The moderation could get to an extreme in most of the world, but was relatively light for Japan's users. I am frustrated with modern social media, aka what I migrated to when Miiverse shut down. Feels like they sometimes pick and choose who they moderate and why. Will say though, at least one bad social habit came from Miiverse.

I impulsively, or compulsively act and react in stupid ways. If I think there's a chance to make up with someone, I try to take it. But as distanced from social norms as I am, it backfires. News sucks honestly.

Never saw Arcane. League of Legends stuff, right? Anyway, fair.

2025 Checkpoint (3/3/25):

Man, we're 2 months into this year already?? Crazy. Anyway, still working on moving out, currently considering my next financial step. Been dealing with a car situation, but it'll be over soon.

Still playing Brothership, currently on Skorcheen Island (don't you just love these pun names?). It's hard to believe I've haven't beaten a game yet this year! Still got games to start and others to finish. But I've been busy, so it's okay.

I actually got a game recently for my PS2 (which I never play). Armoured Core: Last Raven. Found it at a local Gamestop for a good price. Tried it and...well.. turns out Armoured Core's a learning curve. I want to get into the series, but it sounds like there are better games to start the series with. I actually have a copy of For Answer, but I need a ps3.

Year Commitments: ... Well, I'd say I'm growing, as a person and with God. Still need to play Metroid Prime 3, get Federation Force and play that, etc. No rush tho.

It's my Birthday this month, and I'm wanting a Switch copy of Oneshot: World Machine Edition. Borrowed a friend's copy last year, and that game's.... amazing. Just incredible. I desperately need a copy for myself. Saw some on Amazon, so I hope my parents will get it for me.

Have a good week, and God bless!

P.S: Happy 8th anniversary, Switch! This generation has been a pure joy!
