Yeah, it doesn’t make sense. Although I do think that the old formula has its problems and personally think the Origami King is the best in the series. I hope newer games in the series don’t ignore the old or new games, rather take the best parts from each. Have the exploration of Origami King, battle system and creativity of TTYD, story on the level of Super. As far as graphics go, I think the TTYD remake strikes a nice balance between new and old.

@blindsquarel If the devs had your thought process while making the series of games we probably would have actually gotten some good paper Mario games. Like I don’t hate origami kings gameplay as much as others, but why the characters? Why did they get rid of them? The devs did the best they could with what they had but it could have been so much better if that dumb limitation wasn’t put on them.
I feel like enough people don’t give origami kings exploration enough credit, it’s honestly fun to move around the world, and while I’m not sure how it is in other games, I hear no one talk about it.
The graphic in TTYD look amazing! They should honestly keep the style for future games!
I just don’t understand why they would do what they did to the franchise. And again, my begging gripe isn’t even the gameplay, it’s fine to experiment, but put the rules to where they can’t make unique goo bad or toads or Koopas? It’s silly.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

Yeah, it’s really weird. The only thing that makes sense is the whole Mario mandate thing.
But that also doesn’t make much sense since Dream Team was released around the same time as Sticker Star. Plus Origami King did have unique designs for about five characters, but not for most. I don’t think we will ever really find out why the restrictions were put in place.
As far as partners leaving in Origami King, I think it was so each partner got their time to shine. It was easy to pick a favorite in 64 and TTYD, while the rest were only used when needed. Plus, Bobby and Kamek were lost for story purposes. Professor toad staying behind was the only one that wasn’t justifiable.
I do hope that they go back to the old partner system though, it has its flaws but is the best solution available.

If Nintendo still thinking twice to continue their Paper Mario franchise, just let the 3rd party or indie developers making their "Paper Mario" style games.
