I really don't know how obscure these are, but I'm going to throw it out there just in case. I would recommend Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos: Origins. Do those count?

Lets hear it for kevohki for being the greatest contributor to this thread. High-five man!

I guess I got another one:

Live A Live - I pretty interesting game with multiple chapters that you can do in any order. Each chapter introduces a new element to the gameplay. It almost feels like 7 games in one, to be honest. I've only played the Mecha chapter, but so far it seems pretty cool. The gamplay is solid, the story is hilarious, with tons of wacky stuff going on...although it can get pretty annoying sometimes.(for instance, It's hilarious that they make you go down 10 flights of stairs to get to the robot during the ritual to unlock the elevator that takes you to that very same robot, but after you've done said ritual a couple times, it starts to get on your nerves) Another game I really wish was released outside Japan.

No, just...no. Those games just don't have the kind of charm and mystique that JRPGs have.
And D&D's for losers anyways(yeah, I said it!).

JRPGs are lamer than anything ever associated with D&D.

Besides, JRPGs (along with anime) helped to create countless otaku, the scourge of......well, everything.

Well, nobody asked you. But really, who cares? This has nothing to do with the thread. If you're gonna post, please post something relevent to the topic. Seriously...

...Although I guess I shouldn't have said that in the first place. I was pretty pissed off that day, and now it's too late to undo the damage.

Regardless, the topic is JRPGs. You want to talk about Western RPGs, go make your own thread.

Anywho, I guess I'm the only one responding to this thread, so I might as well throw in some more that I got, just for the helluvit:

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story - Pretty fun Action RPG with a pretty fun battle system that's a lot like the Tales of Battle system, except it actually requires good timing and strategy instead of random button mashing(try to button-mash through these battles, and you won't last 5 minutes!). It also has a pretty addicting weapon creation system, and the story and characters are also pretty charming. One thing I gotta mention, though, is that most of the action takes place in one solitary dungeon, and your scenery doesn't really change much throughout the game.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 -

Zone of The Enders: The Fist of Mars -

Sword of Mana -

Contact(DS) - I haven't played this one as much as I should, but so far it's been pretty good. Got a lot of customization, a Final Fantasy 2-style stats and leveling systems, and gameplay and combat reminicent of old-school PC RPGs. The story is pretty charming and quirky, although I was rather disappointed that the Main character doesn't have much personality, nor does he ever interact with you(the game's "hook" is that it's a big fourth-wall breaker, yet it never really capitalizes on it when it should).

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer -

Lunar Knights -

Digimon World DS -

Rogue Galaxy -

...uhh...I'll fill in the rest of the text later. Right now it's sleepy time....Zzz

If you own a Sega Saturn, there are some RPGs you could try out. Here are a couple that I own that I'd recommend:

Guardian Heroes: It's more of a Brawler-RPG since you beat up enemies like a brawler, but gain experience from each hit and customize the charaters' stats. This is definitely one RPG you should own. Multiple paths, multiple endings, multiple characters, multiple moves, and multiple players in multi-player mode (two-player co-op in story mode, and up to six in the arena, with over forty characters to choose from). This will definitely keep you occupied for quite a while. Also, the Golden Skeletal warrior is a bad ass character to command (Listen to him roar and watch him explode to see what I mean).

Panzer Dragoon Saga: Yes, I'm one of the lucky ones who managed to get a hold of a copy, and it wasn't cheap ($100 used, in great condition, thankfully). This is also an RPG you should at least try. The battle system is a combination of Final Fantasy's active time battle system and Panzer Dragoon Orta's "Circle around the enemy and find the weak-point" battle mode. Very unique. Plot is pretty engrossing, too. Only problems are the difficulty, which is mostly easy, and the length, which is under 16 hours to complete the story.

Heh, I was wondering when you'd show up.
I wonder why Pheonixsage hasn't showed up yet? Perhaps he just doesn't know that one of his favorite RPGs is pretty obscure?

Legend of Legaia. The battle system alone brings it to a higher level then any JRPG I've played. It's a JRPG for the PSX, and it can be tricky to find a copy, but compared to the "big boys" of both mass produced games like FFVII ($50), or the rare titles like Suikoden (Also $50), Legend of Legaia only runs about $35.
This is mint condition, original copies, mind you. You can always sacrifice quality to get these games cheaper.
Also, these prices are in CAD an accurate medium with what is being sold on Ebay, not just posted.

Seconding Legend of Legaia. Great battle system with a good level of challenge.

Digital Devil Saga. If I remember correctly, you (Mickeymac) said you didn't enjoy it, but looks are deceiving with that game. I'm currently playing through DDS2 and I can't get enough of the incredible story or the clever battle system. At the start of DDS1 the story is really unpalatable and I found it pretty boring and possibly even cliche, but by the endgame of DDS1 it will blow your mind. The dull plain-ness of the characters and story early on are intentional and explained well later in the game. DDS2 then turns it all on its head and blows your mind repeatedly. It's like playing through a good anime series. If you want proof that it gets better and better, I can show you something that will change your mind about the game but is totally spoilerific.

For a game which is nearing 7 years old DDS has aged extremely well. And it has an amazing thematic soundtrack to boot.
