Anybody know of some RPGs that aren't part of a big-time series like Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, Pokemon, Mario RPG, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, or Tales of...or TWEWY(seriously, If I see another TWEWY recommendation, I am going to SCREAM!!!!)? In other words, just come up with a game that doesn't have tons of people constantly gushing over it, please? Action RPGs and Strategy RPGs do apply.
Oh, and no Nostalgia, please? I know that technically counts since no one asside from the people on Nintendo Life care about it, but still I've heard enough about it. I just want a game I haven't heard already.
Suikoden... Not sure if it's technically obscure really but it's great... However, you should say clear of IV, Tactics and Tierkries, those are the turds of the Suikoden series. But on the other hand, the rest of the games (I, II, III and V) are all top tier. As long as you're not a graphics whore, the Suikoden series is the best there is.
Okay, those I'll accept, especially Breath of Fire, although I might want to wait until I'm done with Breath of Fire 2 first. Is Suikoden Tierkries really that bad? I mean, I can tell from all the trailer that the story is terrible, but the gameplay looks really freakin' good(and gameplay is the most important part of any game). Just sayin'.
I think I'll just recommend some to speed things up:
Bahumat Lagoon - I seriously just heard of this game yesterday, but I played it, and it's been pretty good so far. A fun SRPG with a story that never takes itself too seriously, and gameplay that's not too technical, but still very good. It's interesting how the battles take place like a traditional RPG, similar to SMT: Devil Survivor or Battle Ogre.
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis - Quite possibly the best Strategy RPG I've ever played, especially on the GBA, yet it's been criminally ignored for so long. The battle system is absolutely top-notch, the battle fields are expansive, the story is...f*** who cares about the story? Although I've beentold that it's pretty good, I just skipped all of it, and never had to deal with a single line of text that didn't have to do with the battle at hand. The battles are pretty deep, and I love how you can recruit your enemies through negotiations. It's just too bad this game is fairly rare these days. It's not too bad, but still. If you don't mind the somewhat hefty entrance fee, I'd recommend any strategy RPG fans to give it a shot - you won't regret it!
Warsong - It's Advanced Wars and Fire Emblem combined. What more do I need to say, other than it's frickin' awesome?
Well if you're willing to overlook shoddy story telling then I guess Tierkreis works but since my motivation for for playing RPG's in general, and the Suikoden series in particular, is because of good story telling, I can't overlook that flaw in Tierkreis. I have the same problem with previously mentioned BoF, I'm having a really hard time getting through that game due to the story (atleast thus far) being so uninspiring.
And yes, Bahamut Lagoon is a great game. Really, more people should definitely experience that one. Sure, the script is kinda overwritten but at the same time it gives it a unique identity and the battle system is just the perfect melding of standard grid based strategy and Final Fantasy command battles. It's just neat.
Sieken Densetsu 3 - It's like Secret of Mana, but 10X better. You actually get to choose why your characters and allies are, and the better system is miles better than the SoM's "hack 'n' wait, Slash 'n' wait" style. Attacking actually feels more fluid, and it seems like you have far more options than SoM did. It's a shame it never came out in the U.S.
JRPGs suck (not really, but no RPG fan should stick to them). Play Morrowind or Oblivion or D & D or something.
No, just...no. Those games just don't have the kind of charm and mystique that JRPGs have. And D&D's for losers anyways(yeah, I said it!).
You've got to be kidding me (I hope so) <_< D & D is what you make it, and it can have plenty of charm and mystique if you're playing with the right people.
Most of the computer games rock, too. Neverwinter Nights aside, I never could get into that one.
Anyway, relax. I am a big fan of JRPGs. I just don't play the obscure ones enough to offer up anything.
Xenosaga Trilogy (epis I-III), Persona 3 and 4 for PS2.
[21:14] pixelman: I blame fheblackdragon
[21:15] pixelman: That's not an f by the way, it's a fancy t.
[21:15] Objection: Tales of Graces "fancy t"
[21:15] Objection: Tinal Tantasy
[21:15] theblackdragon: lol OB
[21:15] pixelman: OB knows what he's asking about.
360/PS3: Eternal Sonata (kinda popular but not mentioned very often) PS3: Demon's Souls (if you want to die repeated... I mean a challenge)
Wii: Opoona
If you have a PS2 (if not, pick one up for lots of obscure JRPGs): AR Tonelico 1 and 2 (3 will be on PS3) Odin Sphere Eternal Poison Grim Grimoire Radiata Stories Rogue Galaxy Shadow Hearts Metal Saga
Other decent JRPG series/games: Growlanser Wild Arms Grandia (1 and 2) Lufia Disgaea Suikoden Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma Vagrant Story Mana series (Secret of, Legend of, etc., just stay away from "Dawn of" and the handheld Mana's since I heard they are horrible)
Basically stick with Atlus for obscurity since they tend to bring over the most unheard of Japanese RPGs.
