Well, my son won't want things to be too complicated as he gets frustrated easily. Last night we cut his group to three and started exploring / grinding a bit. We ended up in the Ruins of Alph and captured an Unown (I didn't realize there were different Unowns and we should have caught more). We'll do a little more tonight.

Cool. Unown is pure novelty Pokémon though, it's nigh-unusable and only ever learns one attack (which in most cases is crappy). I wouldn't bother catching more, there's 28 of them and they're identical in all but appearance.

You can beat the game knowing barely any of the mechanics - back in my first Pokémon game, I just used my starter Pokémon the whole way through and Surf'd everything into submission

Most newcomers to Pokemon I've seen have often shown a lot of favoritism towards their starter pokemon (in your son's case, Totodile). Because of this, they usually use their starter and ONLY their starter, resulting in a party that consists of one high levelled pokemon, and 5 other weak ones. This is HIGHLY unadvised, as once you encounter a trainer that can easily topple your starter, you are left with almost nothing to bounce back (I don't know how you managed, Raylax ).

This may or may not be what's happening to your son. Bellsprout shouldn't have any problem with a water pokemon like Totodile. If your son doesn't have any other higher levelled pokemon in his party, then he may be in for some difficult times, regardless of whether or not he has the advantage in terms of pokemon type.

Make sure your son gives equal attention to his entire party. The starter pokemon isn't all that special. It's just there to get you started on your "journey."

I'm working on a game that's coming out soon!

He does show favoritism to his starter because he is easily knocking out low level Pokemon but I did talk with him about using all of his party.

'S'funny. Black and White specifically has a character suggesting using just three Pokémon as people may find raising six difficult.

You guys sure did make it sound alot more complicated then it actually is, lol

You'll eventually want to use a full team of 6, especially when you get to the Pokémon League.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I suggest catching a Geodude and a Zubat. They help out tremendously later on.

He does have a Geodude.

Well I figured out last night that he was not having trouble in Sprout Tower...he was having trouble with the boss fight in Violet Gym. Well, long story short...he finally beat the boss Pidgeotto but just barely. So he has his first badge.

Congrats on your first badge!
Do you have a flying pokemon already?
A flying pokemon will be a "must have" later in your quest, so it wouldn't hurt anyone if you start training one.
Zubat is theorically the best option, but it doesn't learn any good moves in its early levels...

Gyms in this game have low levels, but can be brutal (specially the third one!), gym leaders are far more smart here than in other games so you shouldn't get frustrated if you lose, losing is the only way to really know the enemy!

@Abgar...Right now he has a Pidgety in his group.

Totodile, Geodude and Pidgey.
Sounds like a good starting team.

Oh i almost forgot.
After you defeat the first gym, a dude in azalea's poke mart will give you something special. An Egg!

Eggs take steps to hatch so if you want it to hatch fast you need to walk around a lot. After that a pokemon will come out of it.
Depending on it's ability, it can be very useful or not very good at all. Good luck!

@Abgar...we have the Egg. Once the egg hatches it is ours to keep? Nothing else will need to be done with it?

Right now his team is Totodile, Pidgety and Bellsprout but I just saw that he could trade the Bellsprout for an Onix in Violet City.

Is Sprout Tower is easier or harder than fighting Faulkner in the gym?

Bow ties are cool - The Doctor

Eel

Falkner is supposed to be harder.
The bellsprouts in sprout tower are kind of weak, really.

If you trade a pokemon, the traded pokemon will grow 1.5 times faster than a pokemon you caught yourself, so it gets strong faster.
BUT it will dissobey you if you don't have enough badges, so don't over power it if you trade.
You can always catch your own onix in union cave, anyways.

Once the egg hatches, take it to proffesor elm, and he will give you an Everstone, this item prevents pokemon from evolving. It's useful when you want your pokemon to stay cute... Or when you want your pokemon to learn a move they learn after their evolution level, without them trying to evolve every level after it. (by the way, you can press B to stop evolution)

After that the pokemon is all yours!
Other pokemon hatched from eggs won't give you more everstones, only that one.

Objection

Oh, this is my favorite pokemon game!

You'll want to use a Pidgey against those in the Bellsprout Tower (super effective) and have two Level 10 or higher pokemon for the gym leader. Then from there, you willbe able to get past the ruins and into a cave that will lead to the second town/gym (That leader uses Bugs, weak against flying and fire.) It's entirely possible to go through the whole game with only one pokemon but it'snot recommended for beginners. Nonentheless, its best to keep the party small in th ebeginning to level up faster; three is usually ideal. It's not until you're closer to getting all 8 badges and the Elite Four, that you want a well-balanced team of 6 that covers a variety of types (both in actual types that they are, but also in types that they have moves against.)

Is it safe to assume there are no maps and that you just wander around and follow the signs?

Bow ties are cool - The Doctor

TeeJay

After a while you acquire a device with a map as a function which fills up with routes as you explore, but it's not really needed as the way forward is usually crystal clear.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Wait, you should have a map, remember the old guy who gave you a tour around cherrygrove?
He gave you one for your poketch (your clock-phone).

@abgar - You had a little mistake that I can't let stay like that. It's Pokégear not Pokétch in SS. They are completely different things.

Late

Eel

they're both clocks, both have maps, both use the lower screen, both appear in even numbered pokemon generations and both are on the DS.

Sorry for the mix up though.
