@pixelman I played Civilization: Revolution at my friend's house, and I didn't really like it. Maybe it would have helped if I payed attention to the tutorials , but I doubt that would make me much more engrossed in it.
@SUPERZELDAMAN: Actually, I'm using Python to make this game. Let me warn you that it takes an incredible amount of time to learn how to make even the most basic games (It took me four years to get this far) and a ton of commitment.
@Wiiperson11: For a dev kit? That thought actually crossed my mind last night. If I get enough stuff to show off I may shoot for the moon and ask them for one, haha.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive fan of NES music - but I don't think it'd fit all that well with the game's art style. KWIM?
As for different environments, I expect I'll have normal, icy, and lava areas - though the tiles will always remain black. The changes you'll notice will mainly be in the background.
KWIM? What does that mean?
I only have a short teaser video to go by, so I wasn't quite sure what sounds would fit best. I guess I was getting ahead of myself, so I'll take your word for it for now. I'll try to find some other interesting, alieny sounds. And if I can't come up with anything good, there are tons of free tunes available online made for freeware game developers, I believe.
As for the backgrounds, that sounds perfect. I was mainly wondering if ground tiles would always have grass on them, because I would assume the game would have underground, closed-in rooms, too, since you say it's somewhat Metroid-y.
Beautiful retro graphics and sound. Movement is a tad slow and not as much inertia as I would expect. Physics feel like something between Ice Climbers and Super Mario Brothers, or maybe Ice Climbers and Bubble Bobble would be more accurate. Can't wait to see level 1-2!
My one recommendation... add Up Arrow as an alternate jump button if that wouldn't create a problem. It feels unnatural to have to use a second hand to play. I never did like using space bar in games for some reason. I may be alone in that though as I'm used to playing Jumper.
@Adam: Thanks, and yeah, I'll be replacing the space bar fairly soon (it always feels clunky to me. D'know why I ever use it, really, haha). I do need to increase the inertia a tad, but the speed will remain the same. More levels coming after I finish the gameplay elements! (springs, baddies, etc.)
Oh yes, I was going to ask you - how would you like to see that other Metroid-style game in retro graphics? Same style, but with the NES resolution and an 8bit palette.
I certainly would love to see that. Are you considering changing the style, or are you just going to draw it for fun, or what? I like the current look, but I am a sucker for 8-bit, and most importantly it'd allow me to get away with some cool synth music.
Yeah, I think it'd look really good w/o any slants and with some fancy pixel art. Mind you, the color scheme would stay mostly the same, just 8bitified.
I'll start mocking it up some time tonight or tomorrow.
