@Sunsy The fourth big Frano-Belgian comic was Lucky Luke, a bunch of silly cowboy stories. That probably would've killed in the states.

@N00BiSH Haven't head of Lucky Luke - I'd assumed the fourth would've been Marsupilami, which I vaguely remember seeing around when I was a kid

@N00BiSH Cool, I never heard of Lucky Luke.

@dmcc0 I have heard of Marsupilami, mostly because of the old Disney show.

a couple of things on my mind lately:

  • lots of ppl complain about the refs in the nfl rigging games but I think there's a good chance its all scripted. every person an actor. theres just too much money on the line especially now w the rise of online sports gambling. so how do they keep everyone from spilling the beans? by them signing nda's. legally its listed as entertainment and not sport also. I wonder why. so why did they let the eagles win? ppl were starting to catch on to refs favoring the chiefs. I fear this might be happening to college football but I'm not sure. peewee and highschool might be the only authentic football left.
  • movies have been dead to me since maybe the late 00s. the writing has gone down hill and theres something about the current aesthetic thats very sterile and boring. Ive made a list of best film for every year and I've resorted to the 2010s and 2020s being only youtube vids bc theres just nothing that interests me. far more creativity even though theyre not technically films.

@Sunsy Agree! I actually feel like some of that stems from people hating a certain IP or thinking it’s lame.

Although there may be an IP that maybe isn’t as popular anymore or hasn’t seen any new releases in decades and maybe it gets a new entry that make people go “who asked for this?” there are still fans and people who like the IP and absolutely wanted it. There’s a couple of games and game franchises I like that, while not popular anymore and have been dormant for decades, still have a passionate fan base that want new games.

But, I also think the people that go “who asked for this?” also just don’t give other IPs a try and just assume they are irrelevant and bad because of the general consensus for a piece of media. I actually think it comes from people latching onto opinions from other more popular and influential people like YouTubers. I think that the people who don’t actually play or watch the media in question can cause them to not develop actual opinions, likes and dislikes about it, and they can misunderstand the IP or media they think nobody wanted back since they never watched/played it.

@Sunsy I'm in the UK, and I mostly remember Smurfs from the 80s cartoon. It's one of those things that seems to get a boost in popularity every decade or so where, out of nowhere, there's a bunch of new Smurfs media appears.

Asterix doesn't seem as popular, but it was probably my favourite - I remember my local library had loads of the comics when I was growing up and I think there were a couple of animated movies, or maybe a cartoon too. I don't see as much of it around now, but there's still a few Asterix video games.

I was aware of Tin Tin, but it wasn't really something I particularly liked to be honest - I'm not sure why though.

Marsupilami isn't one I particularly remember that well. To be honest, I'd totally forgotten about it until the game came out a few years ago and jogged my memory. I'm not sure exactly what or where I've seen it, but a vaguely remember seeing...something Marsupilami related when I was a kid.

@Pastellioli Indeed, though the case with Smurfs, it's been pretty active in recent years. There's been a new cartoon in 2021 (which has to be successful, it's getting a third season), new video games I actually own a few of them too. They even introduced new smurfs in Smurfs: The Lost Village, which got incorporated in the official comics (which still get made AFAIK), the new show, and the new games. Maybe it's people who felt Smurfs fell off after the two live action movies or even after the 80's.

Ok, that's the thing, YouTubers tend to have too much of an influence at times when it comes to media. Someone could watch a video and that becomes their opinion without actually watching said media. Speaking of, odd thing about this hate towards the Smurfs, I've only noticed it on YouTube. I just checked Instagram, and I didn't noticed too many upset with the new Smurfs movie. The recent post was just fine other than one comment of criticism.

Personally, this is what makes it an unpopular opinion, I like the way the new movie looks. Yes, they're doing live action again by bringing the Smurfs to Paris, unless a second trailer reveals humans for the Smurfs to interact with, it feels more like it's going to focus on the Smurfs, rather than focusing on a human and the Smurfs (case with the 2011 movie).

@dmcc0 Yeah, the 80's cartoon is what they're best known for. There's been a 2021 cartoon, spun-off the movie Smurfs: The Lost Village and some new games.

Cool, I never seen Asterix being in the US, but I do remember reading about an Asterix GBA game a long time ago, basically standing out as a 3D game on the system.

Tin Tin I've heard of, but my memory feels fuzzy. I think it's about a dog or had a dog. I think I might have seen Marsupilami once as a kid, it's been so long. I remember Disney released it.

@dmcc0 @Sunsy Marsupilami, eh? I watched the one by Disney back in the late 90's. That's how I knew the character. What I didn't know that it was based on a French comic...

@Sunsy Oh yeah, it can also apply to series that have been active but are hated on by people for no reason. I feel like the live action Smurf movies maybe made people feel that way, given a ton of people hated them and everyone just thinks it’s bad because of that. I think whenever there’s a specific entry in a loved IP and that entry turns out to be hated or abysmal, it makes everyone think the IP was bad in the first place and they did not notice it all along, which makes me think of Sonic quite a bit when it comes to that. Also, I didn’t know about the new cartoon doing so well, and while I have watched The Lost Village, I didn’t even know they incorporated the characters in the comics! That’s really cool to know.

Seen that happen a couple of times, but also on Instagram too. People who watch a video or review on a show, movie, game, book, series, anything they never consumed themselves, and they just run with the opinion the YouTuber had and the general consensus on it. It’s a really bad way to form an opinion since you’re relying on someone else’s, and I think it can lead to unconstructive critiques, opinions, and misunderstandings on something.

I am kind of not surprised the Smurf hate is more common on YouTube than other sites, but I read that YouTube tends to push for engagement on videos, and they find that engagement is more common on videos with more negative opinions and reactions to something compared to positive ones because videos that are more provocative elicit stronger reactions than positive ones, and it could be possible some people are only reacting that way to the Smurfs movie just for more engagement and so their video will do better, which is disingenuous.

It reminds me, there was this pretty entertaining YouTuber I occasionally watch who did this review on a disliked Megamind show and his review went viral for his intentionally strong and loud reactions to it (for comedic effect) and people wanted him to do it again for his second review covering some later episodes, but he explained that he thought it would be better for him to express his actual opinions rather than reacting strongly for views. I wish some more YouTube reviewers did that too and know it’s better to express your actual opinions instead of faking them for more engagement.

I do also enjoy the look too. I think the more comic-accurate designs are good, and it seems like they are kind of doing the same thing like Lost Village by translating the OG designs into 3D instead of changing them up and making them look different like the live-action designs.

@Sunsy There was a Tin Tin movie release a while back with (I think) Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis - maybe around 2010 or so which I recall had quite a distinctive animation style. I want to say it was quite similar in style to The Polar Express, but I could be mis-remebering that.

I knew Asterix was very much a euro-flavoured thing, but didn't realise just how little it was known in the US. Given there have been so many releases of various media over the years I assumed it was at least quite popular in other parts of the world. I've got a couple of Asterix Game Gear games and one for the Series X, but there have been other games through the years on most of the popular systems as well as animated movies and other stuff. I thought I recalled a live action movie too around 2000 - I remembered Gerard Depardieu playing Obelix - and when I looked it up, it turns out there was (1999) and it also got a few sequels so must've done well enough.

I personally have detestation with sport symbol that mostly symbolized as soccer ball.
The sport is not just soccer and I hate the mainstream idea of associating the sport with soccer.
If I made sport icons, I will display these 3 sports:
1. Boxing Gloves for Boxing
2. Dumbell for Bodybuilding
3. Baseball bat for baseball

@N00BiSH Looks like I remembered correctly. I never did see Tintin, but do recall stumbling across it online.

@Pastellioli Sad it's like that, now that I think about it (and sticking to this thread's theme of unpopular opinions), I actually didn't think the live action Smurfs were bad movies. I saw them sometime after seeing Smurfs: The Lost Village, and didn't hate them. Oh yes, it has happened with Sonic because of some of the poorly received games. They did. The Lost Village smurfs ended up in the official comics, I actually have one of the books too. They kept them in the current animated series too, hence why I'm confused on why they're not in the new movie.

Yeah, it's like what people do. They see something online and just let that form their opinion for them, without actually watching it or trying it. Today, YouTube on my living room TV recommended a video called "The TERRIBLE Trolls finale." I didn't watch it (it could be clickbait or rage-bait for Trolls fans, I don't want to give the engagement), who wants to guess people see that and never bother watching a Trolls movie themselves. Really sad that could happen.

I do love watching YouTube, I've seen so many gaming related videos and videos on other subjects as well as deep dives on stuff I know and like. It's sad that it pushes the negative more for engagement. Though I have taken advantage of the "Don't Recommend Channel" feature, and have prevented YouTube from showing me recommendations I don't want (including cartoon community YouTubers, since they tend to be so negative towards animation in general).

That brings up another point, they could be doing stuff to be entertaining rather than giving their actual opinions. The best Trolls related videos I've seen are a few smaller YouTubers talking about it, then you have that one guy who says the movies are "terrible," even though it seems like every animated movie is terrible to him (again, I wonder why, I don't watch movie reviews or cartoon community content). Those smaller YouTubers did some good discussions on the series in general, but finding it is like finding a needle in a haystack.

I'm glad you like the Smurfs new look too. That's exactly what came to mind, the look was going for a comic look. I like the way they look in the new movie, honestly, looking forward to seeing more of it in action.

@dmcc0 Looking up the movie online, I think I've seen that poster before. Oh cool, thanks for the bit of history on Asterix, definitely it wasn't here in the US from what I remember anyway. It was one of those things I discovered online, all because of a GBA game with impressive 3D effects.

@Sunsy I think why a lot of people hated the live-action Smurfs movies is mainly because of the way they looked and possibly that trope where popular fictional characters are put into the real world and finding out about how it works. I have seen the live-action movies but it’s been too long. I saw those first and then Lost Village on Netflix, but out of all the Sony Smurf movies I thought Lost Village was the best. That’s strange, I assume maybe it’s licensing or something because the Lost Village was by Sony and the 2025 film is by Paramount, and the Lost Village Smurfs were original characters for that one, but if they appeared in the show and comics then it would not be that. Maybe they want to focus on the original characters or it’s not going to be a continuation of the Lost Village.

I sometimes have come across videos with titles like that, and it’s clearly just clickbait and for engagement since it emphasizes the bad stuff without highlighting any of its qualities. I often see it used a lot with cartoon reviewers for some reason, and sometimes they turn out to be too negative or nitpicking or seem to not understand the content. It reminds me of this YouTuber I sometimes watch who reviews films and sometimes shows, and I can remember there was this review of a bad movie he did and one point he brought up seemed like nitpicking on a small detail in the film. I still like his content, but that part was an unnecessary part to criticize.

Deep dives and analysis videos on games, movies and shows are my favorite, as well as reviews but I always watch ones from YouTubers that are reputable, fair, and unbiased since those tend to be more open to other opinions and usually highlight a media’s strengths and weaknesses. I haven’t been using YouTube a lot as of late but I don’t think I heard of the “don’t recommend channel” feature, usually I scroll and ignore when I see clearly clickbait-y videos but it does seem like it will help if I get recommended a ton of it. Also, yeah, I don’t know why but a lot of the cartoon community on YouTube seems so weirdly negative toward what they review.

Yeah, and it could also be that they maybe have a different opinion on a cartoon or movie but choose to go with the other more popular opinion. I don’t know why on the internet people are against having actual opinions and just follow the more popular one, maybe to not be seen as uncool when having your own opinion on a cartoon is completely fine. Some popular YouTubers I watch that usually review cartoons and animated movies are usually unbiased but sometimes in some videos they appear to call it terrible or think it’s bad all the time without giving it a fair chance. I think when reviewing something you should try to find positives but also negatives, not saying people aren’t allowed to have an overly negative opinion on something, but with media you should try to have an unbiased view and see what you both like and don’t like, which I think is missing from some YouTube reviews on cartoons and popular media. I do agree, usually it’s the smaller channels that I find have more fair and honest opinions.

I’m glad that now the movies are using the comic’s art style, which I thought was missing with their live-action designs. The comic designs are really good in motion and translate well in 3D, and it looked great in the Lost Village!
