The best fanfiction I have ever read was the one about Fred Rechid.

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!

Fanfiction gets a bad rap. We all know this, as the genuine labors of love are always being drowned in the sea of the really creepy (in the bad sense). But (good) people usually write fanfiction for the same reason they'd make any other derivative work, and that reason is because they admire the original work and/or its fictional world. It lets them go wild with their "what if" situations. I don't have a problem with fanfiction, since quite a few of them have managed to make me laugh, for better or worse.

I wrote a fan fiction about Fred Rechid. "The chronicles of my poor, injured leg" is a New York Times best seller, maybe you've heard of it.

Fan fiction is a great way to improve one's writing skills or popularity. (This is especially true for fan art).
I prefer original fiction, of course. But I admit I like to read about my favourite characters in yaoi or yuri situations every so often. Which is nice because these situations won`t ever happen in the actual series.

Well.... it seems like I'm on the minority, quite a surprise there.

I love fanfiction. I don't know about the lot of you but... I find myself lucky that I rarely found fanfiction that is written so badly that I can't continue. Sometimes, there's even quality stuff that is better than the published works (I know, surprising isn't it? -Sarcasm detected-). Fanfiction in a way, as long as they don't make it to make profit (well, if they want to make profit, better make your own, I hate those kind of people with passion), and in general it's a way to vent as well. I have talked with a lot of authors, and the lot of them are nice people (If you can get past that they love to pair the characters, and not all of them do this. There's people that dislike to pair their characters)

So to sum my thoughts, I find that if you want to read good written fanfictions, you might find that TvTropes has a Fanfic Recs page. There you can find fanfiction that has been recommended, and not all of them are to quote some people here 'lusty, sex-filled stories'. Yes, the majority that get talked a lot is the one with sex, but plenty of them didn't have pairing, but instead familiar relations, even touching certain subjects.

i personally don't read them, they aren't canon so I'd feel like I was wasting my time if I was to read one.

You bring up some good points, but my view on fanfiction will remain the same. I do know about the fanfic recs on TvTropes.

I'm pretty much apathetic to the whole sub-culture of fan-fiction. Yeah, some of it is extremely creepy, but fan-fiction in general is really easy to avoid, so most times it's the viewers fault for stumbling upon something which disgusts them. As for commenting on quality, I'll just refer to Sturgeon's Law and leave it at that despite knowing that many would disagree.

@DiabolicalSoup9 No problem. It's just the matter of searching them, I suppose. And if you want to find even better ones, usually, check the reviews, if there's more than 8 for every chapter, although more than 5 usually already promising. All I ask is that, don't judge them all because of the... well, lot of them. There's gems, here and there.

i sometimes read fan fictions, but i usually stop immediately because of the way their written. something about them gives me this vibe that they're written by 7th grade tweens. when i write stories, i try my best to keep it as well-written as possible. everyone gets a unique personality, story has to be worth writing about, and i try to use descriptive writing.

i am part of a social group interested in uniting the world by painting it blue.

I love....LOVE fan fiction. But I am picky when if comes to it. I try my hand at it every once in a while but I never think its good despite what others say.
As for people saying its hard to find the good ones its actually quite easy.

All you need to do is go to Fanfiction.net and then pick what type you want shuch as Games/anime/T.V/Books/Movies and a few more there also is a section for crossovers. Then you just pick the franchise and set it to highest reviews in the filters, you can put more filters but anyway, most of the stuff there at the top is truly great.

I don't want to complain because their existence harms no one, people are free to read or write fanfics to their hearts' content. But personally, I don't enjoy them. I don't want the stories messed with, I usually like them the way they're written. And in the cases I don't... Well, then I'd just be upset they aren't canon (though that'd be rare). Also, as a writer myself... Well, personally I prefer creating my own worlds and characters, and I actually wouldn't like fanfics written of my work if I get published, I wouldn't mind my works inspiring others to write their own stories but I'd prefer them to respect my story and characters the way they're written. I see no reason why they can't simply change some names if they're going to use similar characters and settings (after all, they'd be changing my story in others ways). Still, it's not like I change that any more than people using any other IPs and it's not my business with other IPs (which this topic is about). So I could care less with fanfics, they're not my IPs and nobody is making me read them.

Though I believe it does still take creativity to write a story with another person's characters and stories. If people want to attempt that, no skin off my bones, ya know?

I've been tempted to write a few fan fictions over the years(mostly DBZ related, although a story based on Subspace Emissary in Brawl was also something I had) but I just decided to write my own original stuff. I have no problem with Fanfiction if they treat the source material with respect, and don't disrupt the established canon of the series.

The problem is that many fanfictions often become wish fulfillment stories(A newly created character is in love with a main character), will break established character relationships(Goku is married? Screw that, my newly created character will change that!), make their characters way too perfect compared to the canon ones(Mary Sue), will write canon characters with massive shifts in their personality and behavior that makes no sense at all. Of course, the worst ones are the ones that ignore the existing storyline, backstory, and even the world, and put the characters into a storyline where they don't belong(I once read a Vegeta and Bulma fanfic where they were starcrossed high school students. Anyone with a passing knowledge of Dragonball can the problem with that idea right away.)

I don't hate fanfiction, but all too often it becomes a fantasy fulfillment for fans who want to "fall" in love with a character or want to put put themselves into a world. or people who want to create their own story, but rely on an established group of characters as a crutch even if their ideas don't mesh with the story they want to write.

I can respect people who want to write fanfiction because they love a series. Trust me, I've been tempted to write a few DBZ fanfics over the years. The only thing that kills it is when people turn their stories into something that wrecks the world and characters they are supposed to be in love with.

The Sonic fanbase is particulary prone to high school stories. It makes me feel ashamed and dirty when I say I'm a Sonic fan. Oh well, at least it's the moronic fans' fault, not mine.

What's sad about that is that Sonic lends itself to some good potential fanfic if people wanted to stick with the established canon. It does not even have to be another Sonic vs Eggman storyline. One of the great things about the Sonic Comics is that they often introduced new characters and expanded the world.

Well being part of the Touhou fanbase you tend to read a lot of fan fics and manga, they even made fan anime of it.
So I blame that for my love of Fanfiction.

Depends how erotic they are and what I'm having for breakfast while I read them. LMAO
(kidding BTW fanfictions give birth to things like 50 Shades of Grey which was basically created from a Twilight fanfiction and now all my female friends have been reading it, I know gross).
