@Rambler The main reason I have a "booklog" is because it's the hobby that's usually put on the backburner these days in favor of gaming. I usually try to read 30-60 minutes before I fall asleep to help wind down (and nix screens; I've been having some occasional insomnia lately), but sometimes I conk out before any words make it to my brain.
@Rambler I usually recall what I've read - IF I manage to read lol. Dedicated bookstores aren't common where I am anymore outside of the paltry offerings of chain stores. The internet, on the other hand, is an amazing resource.
@Rambler There used to be a dedicated bookstore here, but the Great Recession took care of that one back when I was in high school. Now there's just...whatever Walmart bothers to stock, or the no-name discount books at the occasional Dollar General.
@Eel Silly me, I forgot about the religious bookstore.
Now onto My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
Only just started it, but it turning out to be a fun, black comedy. You can guess the plot from the title
It’s about a brother who admires his sister ability to eat cereal so well that he gives her the nickname serial killer?
Has anyone read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia? I've seen abit of buzz about it but more often than not when something is buzzy like this it's just naff.
I've been creeping my way through The Stand by Stephen King. I'm about halfway through it at the 680 page mark and I'm really enjoying it. Sometimes it's hard to keep all of the characters straight as the perspective shifts between them.
I've been reading some Japanese books lately. Mainly manga but I have some light novels I'm about to start reading soon.
Some of the ones I've just read:
First two volumes of the 5 volume manga adaptation of Sound Horizon's 7th story album: Märchen (would love to read the rest of them too, I guess I need to get them used)
The manga about Pokémon's creator, Satoshi Tajiri
The Moomins and the Great Flood, a way to easy myself into reading actual books in Japanese
The ones I'm about to start:
Danganronpa Zero
Kirby's Labyrinth Rescue!, one of the many Kirby light novels

Besides the weird insistence on using the n-word whenever Hallorann was around, which I suppose is a product of its era, the climax was very good, I enjoyed it.
It was rather cool how Danny just manages to get the hotel down to his level, confusing it… And basically gives it a mini existential crisis to stall for time while the boiler did its thing.
The fact that the tool shed continued exerting the dark influence of the hotel even after the explosion was also kinda funny. A baby Overlook with murderous intentions.
@Eel I picked up The Shining at my yearly bookstore run in May, though it'll be a bit before I get to it. XD In the meantime I'm sporadically reading another Stephen King masterpiece along with a mindfulness book that was gifted to me: The Green Mile. I'm not very far in at all, only about 50 pages.
(I typically read right before going to sleep, but sometimes sleep supersedes any reading. )
@Eel Yep, I've seen the (excellent) movie, so I sorta know what happens going in. In my experience, books can give extra nuggets of info that movies tend to leave out though, no matter how faithful the adaptation. Conversely, I've never seen The Shining outside of a couple of clips, so for the most part I'll be going in blind. I like Stephen King's material, though I confess I haven't read too much of his library yet.
@Tyranexx I rewatched the Shining today now that I finished the novel. To be honest they’re not as radically different as some people might imply, I think they complement each other quite nicely, being just different enough to enjoy them as their own thing, but clearly two versions of the same story.
Personally, I found the climax in the book to be more satisfying than in the movie. And it sometimes felt like it relied on exposition to explain things set up in the book, when it bothered to explain things that is. So I think I liked the novel better overall.
I also watched the Simpsons parody for good measure. 😅 It’s surprisingly faithful to the movie.
